[CONAN] Armor and Speed in the Conan RPG

I've noticed that the armor in Conan doesn't slow a character as much as armor in D&D 3.5.

Light Armor looks to be the same and have no effect on speed: 30 ft.

Medium and Heavy Armor in Conan slow the character to 25 ft., but in D&D those types of armor slow the character to 20 ft.

Do you think this is a typo in Conan or the way it was meant to be?

I'm thinking that it's no typo because the same Speed rates made it through the AE and 2E editions. But, I wonder why it's not the same as in D&D.

I think Conan really tried to aim for realism, whereas DnD aimed for equality/ trade-off.

I watched a show on the Discovery channel and they showed a fellow who had worn armor and practised in plate armor for nearly twenty years (guy was in his late 30s) and he colud do some very fast and agile things like somersaults, cartwheels, high jump!?!?
The show wanted to portray that armor was not as heavy and debilitating as we thought it was.
If he got knocked off his horse, he could practically be upright in a moment's notice.

Obviously he could not run as AS fast, or jump AS high, as the character could in a tracksuit, but he did pretty good. The biggest drawback was his endurance, the armor and exertions really sapped his CON. Which kinda makes sense in a fight, you want to go all out and have it over quickly and not have a 15 minute slug fest.

Which kinda leads up to another difference between DnD and Conan; the "combat round"
In DnD it is 1 minute long, where in Conan it is 10 seconds. This kinda factors into the previous equation, kinda.

Great topic S4.

Little correction for you, Spectator. D&D hasn't had a 1 min combat round since 1E AD&D. Both 2E AD&D and 3E/3.5E D&D use a 6 second combat round.

Conan uses a 6 second combat round, too.

Thanks bro. I just wish there was some more life on these forums again. It seems all the Conan players are gone.

I do think that the lesser reduction to 25' was meant to be that way by the designers.

I can only speculate about their reasoning and there I say that it was probably the lower magic setting of Conan. In D&D, the prototypical D20 setting, it easy to mitigate or compensate from that -10 speed reduction with easy-to-get magic items like 'Boots of Striding and Springing'. In Conan there is only the 'Fleet-Footed' feat.

Most are gone, yeah. I'm still lurking but I don't really have anything to say or ask with a new thread. And I'm still playing the game. After a long pause, both of our Conan groups have been reactivated

I had hoped that Thulsa's "An Age Undreamed of ..." forum would take over. But either the still active players are fewer than we'd like to hope or they are even bigger lurkers than me. I rarely think that I have anything meaningful to add to most new topics about Conan, I also don't use or intend to use Codex Martialis.

Yeah I'm still an 1st ed. DnD knucklehead, lol.
