Skyscrapers have a lot to do with high cost of living. Rent is through the roof. Skyscrapers mean you can pack more floors on top of each other, not make spacious places w/in each floor. At least in Manhattan.

Now, strangely enough, 42nd St West is more like a suburban mall after Disney's re-development, than any other part of the city, with theme chain restaurants, multiplex movie theatres, Madame Toussad's, etc. But retail space in the city in general is VERY costly. And cost of living has gone throughout the outer boroughs as well. 9/11 didn't lower COL in the city, it accelerated it.
