Commission Rolls?

If there is no number/difficulty level specified, you are supposed to use the default of Average (8+), that is mentioned several times.
Yes, but as was pointed out to me when I posted the same thing above, 8+ what? They would need to at least give you a skill or attribute to roll against right? SOC 8+ or EDU 8+ etc.

Yes, but the rules do not give the difficulty of a commission roll.

If this roll is meant to be universal across all "commissionable careers", then the section on Commission should say something along the lines of "The commission roll is SOC 8+ (Average)." If indeed it is actually an "Average Difficulty" to get a commission in the given service. (Traditionally in other Traveller versions it's not, but it does seem that MgT v1 had all the commission rolls the same.) I'd like to see commissions listed in their career spread (as they were in v1), as I think time spent flipping back to previous pages for reminders is undesirable.

It's also worth mentioning that "Checks" are not discussed until Chapter Two, so assuming the new player will naturally know to turn to Chapter 2 to figure out how to make a "Commission Roll" is perhaps not wise.

Agreed. I actually like the SOC 8+ roll, or maybe even SOC 10+? Although in current societies (US at least) you need a college degree to be an officer, so it would be an EDU based roll...

Needs to be something though...

If you make a Commission roll and succeed, do you get to make an Advancement roll too? In other words, can you get to Officer Rank 2 in the same term?

Or does a Commission roll replace an Advancement roll?
Based on the flow chart, it appears you do not get to try for an advancement if you attempt a commission. But that flow chart is so messed up... shrug

When I read page 17, under Commission and Advancement.

The Commission roll is Optional, the Advancement roll is Mandatory.

Also, it never states that if you roll for Commission that you do not roll for Advancement (it did in MGT1 but not here). I like this better.

Personally, I don't truly mind either way (other than O1 becoming largely superfluous as a rank), but I do think it needs a ruling. Until I hear otherwise, I'll stick with MgT1 - Commission roll means no Advancement roll.

Let's think of this in "real world" terms.

A Commission Roll after you have enlisted is a person applying for OTC (Officer Training School). How does being turned down for that program prevent you from being advanced from Corporal to Sergeant? It shouldn't. They don't really have anything to do with each other.

I applied for OTC during my enlistment, failed the medical exam, but got promoted a year later... One doesn't affect the other, so you should be able to roll for both.

BUT, I think the Commission roll should be harder than an Average (8+) check. It has been in past versions of Traveller.
