Commission Rolls?

Mongoose
Granted, I'm mostly skimming now, but I can't find the Commission roll for any of the services with commissions available.

If it's somewhere other than on the Career Page, it shouldn't be.

In other news, I like the nice, clean format of the new Career Pages.

Pg. 17 has info and the flowchart (pg. 10) does too.

You can only roll for Commission in the first term unless you have SOC 9+, in which case you can roll during any term but need +1 higher per term after the first.

Yes, but where does it say what the commission roll target number is?
Is it just 8+ now? Traditionally, it has varied by branch.
Maybe I'm being dense. I apologize if that's the case.

Email Matthew to let him know commission roll charts are missing.

Nope, good catch. I read it in the flowchart thinking that for all Commission rolls it was SOC 9+, but that is just if you want to try during a term other than the first.

Does anyone have the commission rolls from an earlier playtest doc so we can use them for character creation?

I used the old ones since it looks like the Survival and Advancement rolls are the same, which is SOC 8+ for all branches.

It's pretty much the same as 1st edition. Not much was changed for survival/advancement either.

Yeah, for the two characters I rolled up already the Survival/Advancement were all the same, so I just assumed that Commission would be too. :)

Qualifications haven't changed much either. Commission got deleted from underneath it for the military careers. I've done that mistake with my chargen app. Copy civ career templates over my mil templates.

I think the details of this task should be added to the other commission task roll rules in the Commission section on page 17 and not just put on the career pages.

Ok. I'm seeing what happened here. In 1st edition, SOC 8+ was rolled for in each term to see if a commission happens or not. The SOC 8+ is on the page of each military career (in the printing I have of it).

In 2nd edition, the commission roll is not listed on the pages. But is mentioned as SOC 9+ on page 9. Still it's unclear if SOC 9+ is the roll for a commission or if it is still SOC 8+. Or if it is an automatic one-time commissioned deal if one's SOC happens to be is 9+.

For now, just use best practice.

The SOC 9+ means you can attempt a commission after your first term, with a -1 DM per term after the first.

"You may only attempt to gain a commission in your first term unless your SOC is 9 or higher, in which case you may try for a commission in any term. However, there is DM-1 applied to a commission roll for every term after the first."

What isn't give is what the commission roll is, which I believe the consensuses. is it SOC 8+.

I updated my chargen app to use the commission role each term only of SOC is 9+.

Now watch, the new PDF will come out Friday with the 1st edition rules put back in.

Maybe I am dense, but wasn't it already said that if a check roll is not given assume 8+? Or is there a reason we are unsure that applies here? Sorry if I missed something in the conversation.

Yes, average (8+) is assumed. But for Mongoose Traveller, the tradition has been to say which Characteristic Modifier to use with such a roll. Rarely is a "Just roll 8+ now" ever asked. Rolls have to mean something.

I like that you need to be SOC 9+ in order to try for commission each term now. But then I may miss having scoundrels as generals so early in their careers.

Ah I see what you mean. They need to say at least "Make a SOC check" for me to assume the 8+. Got it.

I think you invented a new term "make a SOC check." Don't have to say average. Don't have to say roll 8+. I've heard it used. I've probably said it to players. But I haven't seen it in print all that much. "Make an INT check." Looks much better than "Make an INT 8+ check."

The referee in me is always looking for ways to remove mechanic talk, which leads to out of character talk, which leads to... you know.

If you make a Commission roll and succeed, do you get to make an Advancement roll too? In other words, can you get to Officer Rank 2 in the same term?

Or does a Commission roll replace an Advancement roll?

It would be good to clarify.
