chronos

well i suppose this question is for a chronos loving fan, not sure who that is hiffano, lol.
why choose that over a hyperion, pound for pound the hyp is surely better?

The Chronos.

It's got similar speed and maneuvreability to a hyperion.
It doesn't have a beam weapon, nor does it carry a fighter, and has less damage, so indeed, why should you take one?

I take them for excellent all round fire arcs, with twin linked pulse cannons, and the turreted railgun. It's hull 6 helps it shrug off more hits than a Hyperion would, it has 3 interceptors to protect it against other hits that aren't beamy..
really, i personally take it for it's surviveability, and it performs excellently in small groups where it can establish overlapping fire arcs. I appreciate it isn't everyones cup of tea, but it has won me so many games, whereas my hyperions, used in my weekend battle, are just woeful... I don't know why, in two rounds of two Hyperions firing on an octurion, they did 6 points of damage :-(

it's all academic, as it's being slapped down to skirmish level :-(

well yeah, but their stats will plummet! and I'll have to buy more models!! ;-)
I might even have to field hyperions!!
we need a chardybis cruiser to fill that raid slot!

Ok the Chronos:

1) Interceptors 3. This may not seem like all that big a deal but in smaller games especially this can make it pretty damn hard to even HURT the Chronos to start with.

2) Hull 6, again its only 1 point higher than the Hyperion but that 1 point can make a HUGE difference.

3) Chronos ARE however quite vulnerable to big beam volleys as their interceptors count for nothing.

The real trick with them though is because their main weapons are turreted and theyve got loads of cannons in all directions they can focus their movement entirely on avioiding their enemies fire arcs without having to worry about lining up their own guns, and if you manage to get one into the middle of an enemy formation you can fire multiple arcs at multiple targets.

Simply put, the Chronos is one of the best ships in the game in my oppinion. Hell it might just BE the best ship in the game aside from the broken ones ;)

cool, i see your point of not nescarily the higher effect weopon being the best, better fire arks, ill have to try a few but wanted to no first why you thought em so good, thanks for that,
hey on a boresight weopon, as its forward facing does it count on your forward fire arc or as a diff fire arc ie firinr f+b or only f, or only b?
now to order some chronos :D

forward and boresight are copletely seperate fire arcs for all purposes of things that restric firing from x arcs etc.

Oh and that brings up the best thing of all about Chronos, they come in nice cheap boxes of 4.

a boresight is a seperate arc, so when you loose a random firing arc, you can loose forward, but you still keep the boresight..

Try to fly them in groups, not necesarily squadroned, but covering each other, It puts a lot of people off moving into the "killing zone"

Boresight is a totally different fire arc to F.
So for example if you are crippled, yuo can fire one weapon per arc... so you can fire one B weapon and one F.

WHAT??? Charybdis Cruiser? what do you mean....

oh yes...the chronos is such a nice ship. nice design and damn good stats...i have eleven from this babys

Having played with the new Skirmish Level Chronos in playtesting I can say that I love the little tike!
2 Skirmish Chronos are definitely better than 1 Raid level.
It's still solid as a rock, high interceptors, has good anti-fighter.
It's a great little support vessel for your larger ships.
It might also make Hyperions worth taking in smaller level games.
2 Raid points will get you a nice beamy Hyperion, and 2 Chronos to watch its back.
I currently have 4 Chronos, I'm aiming for around 6-8.

 I need to get more Chronos frigates.... and whats a Charbydis cruiser? Never heard of it.

It was an excelent fan design made by urobach

And of course discussing borsige arcs brings up the big problem with the heavy cruiser variant hyperion - actually getting that boresighted, mid-short range laser pointed at something....

Chronos are fantastic at swatting things smaller than they are.

(where - as a battlewagon devotee, I can assue you that hull 6 and multiple interceptors is the next best thing to invulnerab....what do you mean Ka'Tan? Are they dangero...oh..)

Whilst hyperions are generally better suited to deal with the big guys.

-New Shadow Fighter and smaller Priority LV shadows

I've been thinking of creating a replacement design as well for the Hyperion, but I am thinking of going the tried and true route. If there is a gap in the fleet, then using good old tech, that should be plentiful, would make the ship easier to build. I see a ship that uses the latest version of the Heavy laser cannon with an increased range. The secondary weapons could be improved versions of plasma cannons and pulse weaponry, but bolters might also be a nice addition. What would make this ship attractive is that most of its systems use tech that the EA knows and can trust. It also makes the ship less expensive to build and design, and adding the artificial gravity tech, would give the ship a longer duration.

i mean the hyperion is really an good old workhorse with very good stats...but in the crusade Ära it is out of date...

and remember, i only build the ships. i don´t make the stats. i everytime ask YOURS, the players for some ideas and then i decide what the best is for the ship an the game balance.

The Marathon is the new Hyperion isn't it!?

That is a Fantastic conversion though! Big Kudos! :)

The Chronos is fine as is. But they are cool looking and more is better than less! :D

Cheers,

RayB
