Are charms equivalent to runes in all aspects?

What I'm wondering is something like this:

if a character with an integrated fertility rune and a beast charm, can he cast runespells that spells that require the beast charm but are cast with the fertility runecasting ability? Do you gain the runecasting ability from a charm?

I guess in general is, can you mix and match runes and charms?

I'd say no. To cast a rune spell, you need the actual rune.

That's what I thought they said. As far as gaining the corresponding runecasting ability I'm not too sure, so they could probably substitute the secondary rune of a spell, but not the primary one.

I'm not sure where the rules say that, but in any case, I certainly wouldn't allow it in my games. Charms are part of spirit magic, and are entirely different from runes, however you use them. They may act like runes from a game point of view, but I wouldn't say they were compatible.

Just adding my support for the notion that though charms and runes are functionally the same in game mechanics they are in fact elements of two distinctly different kinds of magic.

So no, I am not going to allow combining a charm and a rune to cast a spell.

Yes I agree with that. Those spirit magic spells that are exactly the same as rune spells in game mechanics terms also come from a different belief system. So no your bison rider with a charm cant learn rune spells from an Orlanth priest with an affiliated rune relationship.

However, your Orlanthi ancestor worship (and Kitori) charms I'd say would be compatible with Orlanth pantheon rune magic because they share beliefs and culture. In my opinion.

I don't want to put words into the mouths of the authors of the cults books but I reckon charms are a means to Gloranthify the MRQ core rules. It's a fudge but a not bad fudge.
