Changing Career Specialization?

Can you change career specialization in between terms?

The character generation checklist on page 5 says that you can.

The last paragraph of the section describing careers on page 8 seems to indicate that you can not.

I'm inclined to conclude that you can't on the basis that there's no rules describing how it works.

Is there an official ruling on this?

I was wondering this myself. The checklist DOES seem to imply that you can, but I'd say no, as none of the example characters or NPCs do (at least, not the ones in the Main Book).

You could either just let them or require that they make a roll to see if they can "qualify" for the new specialisation.

The only problem I can see from allowing career specialization swapping is with Rank, and the gained skills associated with that.

I think Swampy has a good idea though. If a player wants to change his/her character's specialization in a career, I think a qualification throw would be acceptable.
I picture it like someone getting transferred/promoted to a new department but within the same career structure. So the qualification throw is checking to see if your transfer request was denied/granted. If you're a nice Referee, maybe make it a 'half' qualification throw so that if it is failed the transfer was denied but the character is not thrown out of the career, just has to stay in their current specialization.

I just was reading today, and in the NPC section I looked very carefully, and it seems that the second NPC there took 2 terms of Rogue (enforcer) and 2 terms of Rogue (thief). So yes, you can switch specializations in the same career. Whether that makes sense or not will depend on circumstances I suppose...

i don't have the book to hand, but as long as they are still in the same career i let my players swap. i think it's stage 5 of the flowchart that says "choose specialty".

if changing carrer, so moving from marines to agent, or if you have the suppliments moving from pilot to helm for example, these would require a qualification role

Chef

In the expanded character generation in High Guard and Merc, I think you have to pass a qualification roll to change specialisation, OR you can automatically change if you have accumulated the requisite number of terms.

I believe that a common solution is to allow characters to switch specializations if they share a rank table. For example, Scouts can switch freely between their three specializations, but Agents can switch only between Corporate and the "spy" career (I forget its name).

This is what we do in my group.

Intelligence.

Thank you, Andrew. We allow Agents to switch between Corporate and Intelligence, but not Enforcer, because Enforcer has its own rank advancement table.

At least I think it's Enforcer. Curse my addiction to physical books and their lack of availability at work!

That would be Law Enforcement.
