Career Book 1 from Spica Publishing

Ok another bug I think:

No "Space sciences (any)" in the higher education table of the Colonist career. (the three branches of Space sciences are Planetology, Robotics and Xenology... seems relevant to me, but I could be wrong depending on what terraforming and the study of local alien lifeforms depend of). It should not even replace "Life Sciences (any)" which complements it. Not easy.

I have to admit that I have changed the entire sciences part of the Tra-
veller skills for my setting.

In my campaign there are Basic Sciences (Mathematics, Physics, Chemi-
stry), Planetary Sciences (Geology, Hydrology, Meteorology, Planetolo-
gy), Life Sciences (Biology, Genetics, Ecology), Social Sciences (unchan-
ged, plus Theology) and Space Sciences (Astronomy, Astrophysics).

Robotics has become an Engineering specialty (together with sub-skills
like Habitat Technology or Mining Technology), Informatics a specialty of
the Computer skill, and Linguistics a specialty of the Language skill.

Xenology is not used in my campaign, instead there are specialties for
various alien species, like Diplomacy (Suri) or Genetics (Pashi), with the
Human specialty (e.g. Sociology/Human) as the default for human cha-
racters.

With all those changes, I have of course had to change all the Career
tables somewhat, too, but to me this is a normal part of adapting a sys-
tem to one of my settings - I rarely use anything "raw".

We never claimed CB1 is absolutely perfect, by any means. I appreciate the feedback, zanwot, and I see where you're coming. I'll take it bakc to the Spica Publishing guys.

If you've bought Career Book1 and have feedback of any kind, you can email Spica Publishing direct, via the email address on p. 3 of Career Book 1. We welcome feedback from customers! :D
Thanks, it is good to know that.
Sorry I did not email Spica directly, my first reflex was to discuss this with other users.

No, feel free to discuss. I think you make a valid point about the Advocate skill. I personally thought it was a lawyer skill, not an oration skill. Apparently it is both.

The colonist is supposed to be the worker guy, not the scientist, so I think having some but not a lot of science skills is appropriate. Think more of Aunt Baru for Star Wars. The Colonist is a farmer or miner, not a scientist specifically, but will have to know something about those things as he fights against the native life forms.

actually, as a house rule I am considering giving Advocate specialties:
* Impirium law
* Oratory
* [insert planet name] law
* [insert any type of law, such as criminal, financial, religious] laws.

More realistic, more comprehensible, at the cost of some gameplay. Don't know if it is worth it.

Actually I don't agree, as even if in other religions theology is not allways necessary, I am pretty certain most preachers, in whatever religion, know at least some theology. That is a bit the pioint usually. The point is in the rules as is, without education 8+ it is impossible to even get theology 0 for preachers. I find that strange. Within organised religions, I am pretty certain you don't really get people who become preachers who don't know anything about theology.

Actually I would say that most clergy probably do not have Theology. Only the academic clergy would have it (the Catholic Church is quite an academic institution, all told); regular clergy would of course know 'scripture', but scripture and theology are not the same thing.

A friend of mine, who has a theology degree, said that his lecturer defined theology as "religion for atheists". You don't get theological discussion at the pulpit; missionaries do not convert the fuzzy-wuzzies with nuanced intellectual debate; most evangelicals I have met have absolutely no knowledge of theology at all.

Trained theologians can discuss the relative merits and comparisons from different faiths. A Christian theologian would have a good understanding of Islam, and vice versa for a Muslim theologian; compare that to the levels of ignorance from both sides about each other in contemporary debates.

So Theology should definitely be available only through Advanced Education.

I'll agree on Advocate, though. :)

Zanwot, I like the idea of Specializing the Advocate skill!

I think that there are a lot of skills in the TMB that could be specialized like that without damaging play too much. Since you get Level 0 whenever you specialize, it still lets you do whatever is needed without penalty.

Spica Publishing is pleased to announce that we've reduced the prices for our highly successful and popular book, Career Book 1!

Now you can now purchase the pdf of Career Book 1 at the new, low prices of just $ 4.36 for the pdf (from DTRPG.com) and only $ 8.65 for the print edition (direct from Spica Publishing)!

Please note that S&H is not included in the above price for the print edition.

Apologies: I meant the *price* has been revised, not the content. The pdf you can buy at DTRPG is the latest version which was put up some weeks ago. We have not posted yet another, revised/updated pdf. I've amended my original post for clarity. Also, when we update the pdf we send out an email to all customers that opted to be informed of updates to the file.

Apologies for any confusion caused - my bad.

Hi people!

This is just to let you know that Spica Publishing has now completely sold out of the print edition of Career Book 1 and that it is no longer available direct from Spica Publishing. Unfortunately, this also means that it is no longer available via auction or Buy It Now on ebay (under our "spicapublishing" username). Finally, we have no further plans for any more print runs of CB1 at present.

However, if you'd still like a print edition of CB1, you can order one from our Spica Publishing store at Lulu, here. Career Book 1 is still available at DTRPG as a pdf, here.

Thanks!

The Spica Publishing team.

I am obviously not your only satisfied customer; but in typical Traveller-fan style I will now ask what your next Traveller publication will be?

I am very happy with Career Book 1 and look foward to a Career Book 2 or even a Traveller setting/world. Since I mostly "play with" my Traveller material, your book was exactly what I was looking for.

Thanks much.

Now get cracking on the release of the next one, thank you.

We have three other projects in the oven at present :)

w00t! Thanks for that, it's encouraging to know we hit the target with our first book!
Thanks much.
You are most welcome :D

Just picked it up from DTRPG and read it through for the first time. I'm very happy with the book, and what I paid for it.

I have particular plans for the religious classes, and the expanded citizen classes are great, too. The other classes have me thinking about potential additions to my campaign as well.

The tables are great. Well suited to the classes with a lot of character. That's not easy! The only minor niggles for me were astrogation for the colonist advancement table and ship shares rather than vehicles for colonists on mustering out.

The art is great. I have to admit the religious militant art helped sell me on the book. Gotta love the Norman haircut. :)

Thanks to all involved-great book!

Thanks saundby for the positive feeback. :D

We've got several more books in the pipeline, hope you like those too.

(and of course the Nemesis Class Pursuit Ship is already available).
