can fighters in space superiorty

Ok I am fighting a space superiority battle because of the dice I have to field 3 patrol points; because of damage to my fleet I can’t field any thing but fighters. They were independently purchased. So here is the question can indepented fighters claim zones for VP in scenario, can they contest zones with enemy ships to keep them from getting VP?
Or is my only chance of victory is completely destroying the enemy.
I am defending this time so I win a tie!

Fighters are not ships so can't gain VP for being the only ship in a square in Space Superiority

ok so they will earn no victory points for holding areas of the board how about contesting an area, will fighters in the same area as a enemy ship stop it from getting any points.

Fighters can't contest areas either. If only one side has ships in an area, they claim it, fighters are not ships, and the wording is "no enemy ships".
