Built-in 3rd Imperium Setting

Is the plan to have the 3rd Imperium setting hard wired as part of the core rulebook? If so I would like to record a vote against this - what made MGT1 so great was that it finally took Traveller back to its generic roots, even more so than the original 3LBB version. IMO setting books should stay separate from the rules.

The current core rules amount to being about the same level of Imperium hard wiring as before, with the exception of the sample sector included and (most likely) the references made in the art. That is, the rules very much imply a setting without hardwiring it. You'll still be able to use it generically I think, without much fuss.

The reason I ask is because there are quite a lot of mentions of the OTU in the rules - the 3rd Imperium text in the introduction, listing Tour of the Imperium as one of the main 'further reading' books, Aslan and Vargr in character creation, etc.

There are also concrete-sounding statements in the careers: "Merchant Marine: You work on one of the massive cargo haulers run by the Imperium or the megacorporations."

That has me concerned.

That text is actually identical to 1st edition MgT.

The main setting has always been The Third Imperium and it's probably where the major market is for the game. The initial releases for the game will reflect this. However, there was also talk of a new setting getting released in the new year too (involving Zombies in Space, I think) as well as rumours of the long delayed Traveller: Prime Directive. The third party publishers remain in the loop too, and there has been other suggestions of using Traveller for western and military settings.

In short, I wouldn't sweat it!

I'm still processing this.

Here, this will help. A Tribute to the Burgess Shale Period of Traveller.

It does not help explain at all why MgT 1st would have less setting in it than the LBBs 1-3 have.

For most players (i.e. those not associated with GDW) The Third Imperium didn't exist in the LBBs until Supplement 3 "The Spinward Marches" was released.
