Building a primus.... (the antena things)

Mongoose
So anyway hen i first got my fleet i found it really annoying to put the front prong antena things (or what ever you want to call them) on, and decided to leave them off but more and moe i really feel like i want them on, the problem is they are very fragile it's a hard connection to make and really finiky....

I tried sculpting a hold for them and fitting them in but during a game this weekend a mate knocked the flight stands oevr and they just came right out, so i've removed all the scultping and am think ing of another way to get them on.

Does anyone here have any suggestions...

well i know what you mean, i had mine on for ages, but in and out of the box just kept knocking them off.
most people leave them off for that reason.
the strongest way ive found is to carefully cut a groove for them then fill the hole (with them in it)with super glue, and use an activator so they go off imeidiatly.
good luck :D

I have two Primus cruisers, one has no prongs, the other has the prongs fixed on with GW green stuff. It was a nightmare to do, though, and doesn't actually look that good.

I might just have to try that souldering method....

i just really like the look of them on... adds a little more... style too the ship.

I've got 5 and I've left them off on all of them. I tried drilling a small hole, and using rod to get a similar effect; but the area is too small. Soldering might work; but I'm not sure the surface area will be enough to get a decent hold . . . . . dunno though. I've painted mine now as well; so i doubt I'll bother trying to stick them on.

Hope it works out though.

With the original pieces, the contact area was too small and elongated to support a strong bond with super glues. I then destroyed one boom while trying to weld it.

I finally drill small shallow holes and put in some left over minbari guns. As they are shorter, and I glued pretty heavily, that worked for me.

I actually contemplated welding them on with a soldering iron, but I never tried it. Not sure if it would have been hot enough to melt the metal. Or safe. :?

I don't think using a heat method on pewter is the greatest idea. You might end up obliterating the area you are trying to attach something to.

I left the prongs off my three primus. They set off my continually reattachment needed alarm. You could try looking at EA Urobach's posts. I seem to remember him coming up with a way to do it.

yep after some test welding on flash with a soldering iron i'm pretty sure too much damage to the model would occur for a solder weld.

next step try cut a grove and glue it in then brown stuff (cause it's harder than green) a "craddle" to give it more support.

I have three Primii and have attached the antennas to all of them (and also my Balvarin, Octurion and Valerius models).

The original Primus casts had a vertical notch at the end of each 'knuckle' to recieve the antenna; over the years the mould has deteriorated and the notch is now barely evident.

I used a narrow modelling file to re-cut the notches on the Primus I built earlier this month (Huntress), and filed the rear of the antenna clusters into a wedge shape to fit into the notches.

Added a blob of superglue, it worked a treat.

A couple of photos of Huntress;

No apologies for the painting, or the layer of dust, but many thanks to Urobach for the Mass Driver.

I'm trying to picture this part...

@ Nomad: modify the antenna instead of the hull... Good thinking. :) Your table is pretty crowded, though. Have to be really careful with so many of them having antennas
