Buck Rogers for Traveller

TrippyHippy

Emperor Mongoose
Major movie coming out next year, apparently. Perfect timing for a more pulp inclined Traveller license, and it would provide an expandable gaming universe.

It would provide a nice sci-fi counterbalance to Conan the Barbarian, which I'd hope would eventually be seen with RQII.

I want a pulpy setting for Traveller.

Isn't that Judge Dredd? Honest question as I've never looked at the game or even a comic. Perhaps it's not pulp but rather camp!

I have only one thing to say about this, NO, let it die, please, please, for the sake of all that is holy and right, don't awaken it, leave it undisturbed in the tomb.

Invent something new and shiney.

Judge Dredd sort of is - and I like it - although I think that basically Traveller needs to add more settings generally. Buck Rogers is somewhat different in tone to the 2000AD comics though.

I'd like to see lots of different Traveller sci-fi settings that highlight the game's versatility.

What version of Buck Rodgers?

The 1930s "Buster Crabe vs. the Yellow Thread" version?

The 1980s "Gil Gerard trying to hit on Erin Grey" version?

A variant of the RPG from the 1980s?

The second one would be the most interesting setting IMHO and the film is more interesting than the 1930s show.
I would also plump for the 1980s TV show. I liked the post-apocalyptic vibe (and after recently acquiring the DVD I know that's not just nostalgia talking), and I think it would be great fun to expand into a Traveller setting. Did I mention that people IMTU dress exactly like people in this TV show? :D

Pity they made only the one season ... :(

Because in that case we have to choose between
+ "Sam Jones trying to choose between Melodie Anderson and Ornella Muti"
So we are back to square one.

thats not really a choice - Ms Muti was sooo gorgeous..........

love that film - was horrified by the recent series.........

You forgot to add the very first version from 1928 or so "Armageddon 2419 A.D." and "The Airlords of Han" and the associated RPG version from the 1990's. Though that one may not be so politically correct.

The actual comic strips from the 1930's.

And IIRC there was a radio show as well.

I just assumed he was the son of the original and then ignored the fact they named the series wrong...

The theme tune was fine though.

Still if we're voting for which type of flash gordon then by all means go for the 80's version, there's always plenty of room for Brian Blessed!

Well, I could settle for the one season 1980s show as well. And yes, the SciFi "look and feel" for the earthers was quite nice. Liked the fighters as well.

I fear that the show will be difficult to translate into a game since it relies a lot on the interaction between Buck and Wilma and those often don't work with RPG groups.

Given that space shuttle would have more than a one man crew, just imagine having the PCs being either members of the crew or current inhabitants...

I suspect Buck would have a lot of competition when chatting up Wilma... I'm just trying to imagine if they go the route of saying that shuttle wasn't crewed by the US finest but a motley crew of un operatives whose moral fibre is due to say one being a trekkie, another being a Jedi wannabe, a horror fan and so on... if you thought understanding the locals was going to be difficult just imagine how they feel sort of how Farscape's crew felt when they first met Crichton!

The current Space Shuttle has more than a one man crew, but what appeared in "Buck Rogers in the 25th Century" was not the same craft - the big engines on the side are evidence of that. ;) However, when Buck didn't return from his mission, NASA might have sent a follow-up mission with a larger craft crewed by the PC's...

Or, if you want a motley crew of various fans, the next craft to accidentally travel to the 25th century isn't from NASA/USAF, it's from Virgin Galactic and the PC's are tourists who get a longer ride than they paid for. :)

Incidentally, if you do run the 1980's version of "Buck Rogers", you get Flash Gordon thrown in as a bonus. As I recall, there was an episode featuring a Brigadier Gordon, played by Buster Crabbe, leading to a conversation between Gordon and Rogers:
Gordon: "I was flying these things before you were born"
Rogers: "You think so?"
Gordon: "I know so."

Despite all the drama surrounding it, the TSR RPG from the 90s, and the novels that went with it were freaking epic. It may not have been the best sci-fi I've ever read, but the setting and the stories were fun. Using the solar system as a backdrop in a sci fi setting that is Pre FTL travel is underrated IMO.

But yeah, the aforementioned drama which lead to the demise of TSR... Of course, there's no reason a pulpy sci-fi setting couldn't be made as an original setting. Call it "Captain Proton" or some such.
