BAsing ships, which size stem for which ones?

So it's pretty obvious which size base to use for which ships, the one that comes with it :)

But which is best to use, the long or shorter stem for which ships? Any suggestions?

I have only worked on two fleets to date the Hawkwood and the Decados, however I have already had several issues with the holes in the bottoms of the miniatures being too small to fit on ether stem type.

that was same with B5, stems never fit the minis but anyway in answer to LBH I always use shorter stems. mainly as easier to transport and less stuff to snap.

If you transport the ships around a lot then katadder is spot on however I like the fleet to to be roughly at the same level which for me means using the longer stem for the smaller sized cap ships and using the shorter stem for the larger cap ships.

Easy to tell which, if the mini comes with a small base, long stem or if large base then short stem.

May do the same for the fighters/bombers, haven't decided yet. Looked good for B5 fighters, but scaling is a bit diffferent in NA.

shame the stems are pretty long either way, i used to like the really short stems in previous editions. in fact my centauri were based using B5 wars bases/stems

Indeed, in general terms, high centre of gravity best avoided and certainly for heavy ships.

Suppose you could cut stem shorter and peg with brass rod/ tube, relatively easy if time consuming. probably stronger joint to base as well.
Don't expect it to be too critical for NA ships tho, compared to B5 minis.

Hmm,

I'd have thought tall stems for big bases and small stems for small bases so the little ships fit under the big ones, but I can see that low COG is a good idea for minis.

Anyone got any photos to see what the difference in height looks like?
