Baron Munchausen - Gentleman's Edition

Further update: They arrived today, and are currently being packed. _Most_ will go out with the post tomorrow, though some may go out on Friday (depends on how fast we can pack!).

1000 books in about 6 hours (give or take)

For 1 person to pack that's a packaged book every 20 seconds (or so).
3 people can slow down, take it easy and pack a book every minute.

Not surprising that some won't be packed tomorrow.

Hope you don't pack alphabetically!!

I just received my copy of the Gentleman's Edition today; I seem to have fallen victim to a strange printing error: the footer of every page contains the first word of the following page. It's a really ugly-looking error in an otherwise beautiful-looking book!

Do all of the copies of the Gentleman's Edition have ths problem? The Mongoose returns policy suggests that I can return it for a refund... I'd hate to do that because I love the idea of this book and the game very much. I'd be happy to return it in exchange for a fixed copy, if any such copies exist.

What are my options here?

It is supposed to be like that :)

It was standard practice during the 18th/early 19th century (and earlier, for that matter) to do so with books.

I would suspect it made it easier to correctly order the pages back in the good old days of slow hand printing before page numbering was common. Or something like that.

Sort of--page numbers, or rather folio numbers (one number per leaf), were used intermittently in England from the thirteenth century, perhaps earlier. One leaf = two pages, a recto (right side) and a verso (its reverse). Once printing took off, some printers used signature notations in addition, or instead: A1 is the first leaf of a gathering (the little booklet you get after cutting and folding a large sheet), A2 is the second leaf, B1 is the first leaf of the next gathering, and so on. That's not really related.

Catchwords occurred at the foot of the last leaf of a gathering, for both medieval manuscripts and printed books, so that the binder would know which booklet came next. Sometimes you see catchwords on the verso of each leaf; booklets came apart, catchwords were used decoratively, etc.

Having catchwords on every *page* is still wrong, or at least redundant and a waste of ink :) because you can't split apart the recto and verso of a leaf. If you have a recto, you always have a verso and cannot possibly lose it or mistake which page comes next. I suppose there might exist old books with catchwords on every page, but they'd be exceptional (and I'd be curious to know what they are).

Not to be too confusing, but I can see the use in having catchwords on every verso (the current comment is not from dfabulich, rather dfabulich's spouse, a medievalist / manuscript scholar). Having them every page might be a joke...?

Got my copy today, phoned MAtt a t MGP to check I wasn't seeing things and actually had a Gentlemen's Edition in my and. Thanks for taking my call Matt.

Thanks to all involved in getting the books out so quickly. My copy was waiting for me this afternoon and it's a truly handsome volume.

Is there any chance of a second printing of the Gentleman's Edition? I'll be lucky if even the paperback edition makes it out to my local game stores.

I'd like to see how it's grown.

Cheers,
Brisco.

Sorry, no. Our warehouse has completley sold out, but we have about 20 copies left here in the UK office, if you are quick. . .

The gentlemen's edition is a magnificent and good looking volume.

I suggest you grab one ASAP before they appear on ebay for twice the price. :)

Cheers

It's a long ride to the UK. If the online order page on the Mongoose site only ships what's in the warehouse, then I'll have to try Amazon.

Thanks for the info.
Brisco.
