Balvarin Spotting

My gaming group is going to do some scenarios where the only vessels you may use are those that appeared in the show or the movies. We are in conflict about the Balvarin. In Lost Tales, right after the warlock has destroyed the centauri vessl using its heavy particle cannon, in the background is a centauri vessel that appears to be a Balvarin. Can anyone confirm this so we know if we need to include the Balvarin in our scenarios? Thanks.

There's a picture of it here (mid-bottom right): http://www.jumpnow.de/p/movies/vitd/losttales_488.jpg

Incidentally (just in case you missed it), the Kutai can also be seen (below the Warlock): http://www.jumpnow.de/p/movies/vitd/losttales_480.jpg

might give the Centauri a most useful advantage as they have some of their best ships on screen :)

Primus, Vorchan, Balvarin, Kutai,

I think Greg actually listed all ships seen in the show on one thread somewhere on here ?

Da Boss: I started a thread like that after I first came here, maybe that was it?

Greg had caught a ton of ships that I'd missed.

Garthim: No problem. There's also a couple of shots of the Brakiri Tashkat (lower right on all three):

Thanks for pointing out the Tashkat eek and providing the pics. I read the thread that you provided a link to and have another question. Blue Star was listed as making an appearance on screen according to that thread. Do you happen to have a shot of it?

no, but I "think" it was the second to last episode of season 5.

Yep, I've got a few. Last episode of season 5, "Sleeping In Light":

Thanks so much for all the pics and help. I will show these to my gaming group and have the scenarios under way by this weekend.

I pity any Narn player :-( one substandard battleship, and a one dimensional raid ship. My money is on the centauri, against anyone. (well ok, maybe not the shadows)

Neither do the Gaim. ;)

I'm not a gambler so I won't take Hiffano's money, but I'd take Earth against the Centauri or any other Younger Race. Ships at all levels from Skirmish up, plus two types of fighter.

I'm not 100% sure about that Tashkat. It's difficult to judge size, but the shape of the vertical tail fin, the lack of forward wings and the lack of vertical finlets on the wingtips all say that could be a Shakara instead. Although the Shakara has a round cross-section hull whereas the Tashkat, like the ships in those photos, has a square cross-section. For the purposes of the game, decide if you want the Brakiri to have nothing smaller than Battle level or nothing larger than Battle level. ;)

Three EA fighters. Didn't the Badger make an appearance?

Perhaps if one side simply played "League" then there would be enough variety. As it is, Centauri and EA have the real on-screen variety.

Time to be pedantic. :D The Badger never made an appearance. It was supposed to appear in the film "In The Beginning" but never did.

What appears in "A Voice In The Wilderness" is just a heavy fighter. Chameleon Eclectic, designers of the Babylon Project RPG, found out about the name Badger and wrongly applied it to this fighter. AOG copied them, Mongoose copied AOG. According to Tim Earls, who designed it, "The Badger is more like an F-111 with pilot and co-pilot sitting side-by-side in a lengthened fuselage with the wings swept slightly forward".

For references, take a look at B5 Scrolls, featuring (among other things) a whole lot of ship designs plus comments from the designers. For one thing, I was wrong on another count - the Gaim did get one ship, a fighter which looks nothing like the Klikkita. ;)

As for the Blue Star, it's difficult to judge size from the first of Eek's photos, but most of the nose section seems to be the cockpit, so guess that it's somewhere around the size of the bridge of a White Star. That would make the whole Blue Star about the size of the top part of a White Star. It looks bigger than a White Star in that photo because it's coming towards you and the nearest White Star isn't. :)

The starfuries seen at the start of Thirdspace which are fighting the raiders have missles mounted on their wings if you look closely. We always assumed in my gaming group those were badgers based on the Mongoose models.
