Astrogation check

Astrogation task verification is not considered at all in MgT2. Mongoose is a complete different mechanic from T5. T is full of convoluted ideas that bog down gameplay.

It isn't?

CRB pg 148 "Preparing for Jump" has a paragraph on making an Astrogation check. Now this can be done ahead of time so there's plenty of time to re-roll and/or verify such checks, but it is there.
If no one has Astrogation then it is not that easy of a check to make. Now I do think the computer should have an Astrogation program or sub-routine as part of the Jump Control software and at
least provide Astrogation-0 to anyone making the check who doesn't have the skill.

Generally I don't bother having the PCs make die rolls to jump after the first time (once so they realize what's involved in the procedure) until something bad happens to the ship to affect its performance.

Space is incredibly vast and things in space move very slowly. I would have thought a single calculation would be good for several days if not weeks.

Same here.

Maybe it degrades slightly over time and you take the hit on arrival. Say every day passed since the calcs were done add 2D diameters to your exit point. You could end up adding several days' in-system travel just to get to your intended 100-diameter exit point...

Jeffrey’s question, and my answer, are not about the astrogation check. They are referring to the T5 concept of uncertain task verification. The task check after the task check, because you think you’ve got it right, but you might not, because you don’t know what the referee’s uncertain die roll was, so check it again. This is a part of T5 that is not in Mongoose Traveller.

Ah. Thanks for the clarification.

Or the universe doesn't make jump travel easy meaning precise calculations on very powerful computers based on extreme volumes of data. In space no one can hear you misplace a decimal point.

Depends on how loose the tolerances are.

I always felt that a lanthanum grid would provide a more precise exit and less time dilation.

They move very slowly in our own four-dimensional Normal Space, but for all we know, they might move extremely rapidly in the 10 or 11 dimensions of Jumpspace…
