Armored Bulkhead

Volume cost of 10% of the protected system is all well and dandy, but how much tonnage to protect the (0 volume) computer or basic sensor? Are they considered protected if the Bridge has an Armored Bulkhead?

I was under the impression these are now considered distributed rather than exclusively relegated to one location.

I would suggest adding an armored bulkhead to the bridge to cover those systems.

Actual distribution means you'd have to knock out all locations, or just one plus the network connections to the bridge.

Armoured Bulkheads for the Bridge does nothing in space combat.

Given the limited utility of Armoured Bulkheads in general I would allow a design to specify the computer (and other components without specified tonnage) to be protected as a side effect of any reasonable investment in Armoured Bulkheads.

Everyone forever screamed it's more realistic for the computer and other components to be 'realistically' distributed. Now people want the computer to be centralized in one location. That's have cake and eating it too.

It's unfortunate that there aren't distinctions between military and civilian designs. Military ships (most) would automatically be designed with redundant systems and additional protection around critical systems.

A sensor system would already be distributed around the hull, thus providing redundancy. However that doesn't mean all the signals aren't routed to a central system for processing. So I would say unless you pay for a secondary sensor system, it can be knocked out with a single hit, the same as a computer.

CRB2e pg 159, critical hits. neither sensors nor computers get disabled in just one step short of a massive critical/multiple criticals. As far as I'm concerned the armor can be just as distributed around as the computer/sensor grid. Nothing says it has to be concentrated in one spot unless you design it that way. As far as the Enterprise goes, I blame *lazy* scriptwriters for the computer going down just as badly as they do the shields. I'm going to go with bridge armored bulkheads cover critical computer components and basic sensor sensor functions, advanced sensors must be armored separately. The tonnage for armor can be considered to be redundant circuitry, protected conduits, or whatever. Now that I think about it, the particular design I was working on has everything reinforced/armored, I could just take volume left after calculating armor and use that to figure bulkheads tonnage.

You could give it a Circle of Protection against a particular event or type of damage.

Asbestos coating, to make it fireproof.
