Apocalypse-Z , Evo ZOMBIES!

I'm at GenCon now. My buddy and I both bought a copy of the book. It was selling well and there were only 1-2 copies left on the shelf. I've only flipped through it, but it's nicely done and there is some creative variety on the mini options.

Thank you very much for the compliment. Kermit and I have already started work on a supplement book for it... its still a ways off (we have a few other projects in the works as well) but we're going to work on an overhaul of our website (www.explodinggoatgames.com) and hopefully will have some new scenarios and maybe a new unit or two within the near future...

I playtested Reich of the Dead at GenCon too. Your version runs circles around it. Reaper's zombie game has several balancing issues and multiple weapon systems/units that don't make sense.

-a mounted bow machine gun on a tank does less damage than an M1 Garand.
-You can't run zombies over with your tank.
-you can't do anything about an enemy that has mounted your tank and started using your commander MG... unless you shoot him with another mini on the board.
-Sniper rules... um... yeah... They are like teleporting mages of doom.

I've come to believe there are a couple different versions of the official playtest rules for RotD; but that's just me. :)

I think RotD will be a great game once things get ironed out for it and I'm pretty jazzed about it; however, since the game seems to have fallen behind schedule and getting info on it's progress is apparently a touchy subject. Or maybe it's just my style of asking.

I've found Apocalypse - Z works just as in a WWII setting. We've done about a half dozen Z games using our WWII campaign and it works just as well and unless EGG takes the backwards style of communicating to the players, I think it'll go far. At least with my group.

I havent finished reading it yet but from what I have read it is looking great. It looks as if it will be insanely fun to play once I get around to it. And MGP booth at Gencon did sell out of the copies they had or at least they sold down to 1. Awesome looking game.

I rarely buy stuff like this online, especially if there is no hard copy, but I've got to say I'm looking forward to this. I've got hundreds of zombies just waiting (from all the Zombies!!! sets I have)...

They sold out. I went back and got a second copy - the last one. Needed one for an Evocommand prize from the last mini contest and one for myself.

Will there be any copies at GenCon UK at the end of the month?

I sincerely doubt it. The copies we had here at Exploding Goat Games were a pre-release run we had printed up special for Historicon. I gave some of the few remaining copies I had to Alex to take to GenCon Indy. I doubt Matt could print up another run fast enough, or if its even in the stars for now. The main release is scheduled for November. Alliance Distributors has it listed earlier, but we're looking into that...

I do have a few left here in Connecticut and I would be willing to ship overseas (I'd hafta get the postage rates figured out) but my guess is it wouldn't be worth the shipping cost. If you'd like to though, I'm more than happy to do it! :)

If you'd like one send me an email at custserv@explodinggoatgames.com.
I'll do my best. I've only got 5 copies left.

Here's a blog review of the Apocalypse-Z pre-release:

http://cerebralcortexofthedamned.blogspot.com/2008/08/apocalypse-z-review.html

This is entirely what a gaming review should be, well thought-out, with constructive critiques. I was overall very pleased with the review and thankful to Robert (CCotD) for the time he spent.

ROFL-Zombie! (Like a ROFLCOPTER but smells and tries to eat your brain while laughint) Looks like DaWarbossMI beat me to it. I was going to post my review here when I saw the topic.

If anyone has any questions about the game, please do not hesitate to contact me. (or better yet head over the Exploding Goat Forums and post there).

Hey all,

For those of you who were able to get your hands on a copy of the pre-release run of Apocalypse-Z a few things...

1. Thanks! Hope you enjoy.

2. An astute customer brought an issue to our attention. There is a small error in the Overlord Psychic Abilities section. We've started compiling an errata on our web forums (www.explodinggoatgames.com). Stop by and check it out.

3. The full release is scheduled for November through Mongoose's Flaming Cobra imprint program. I've noticed several online stores have it listed for pre-order and Mongoose does as well. It was just listed in Game Trade Magazine (Alliance Distributors) so your local store should be able to get copies no problem. You could always even order it through a regular book store using its ISBN.

Thanks and hope you enjoy.

Well we played our first scenario of the campaign. We tried out a bunch of "house" hero rules and will share them with Jay in the future before posting anything (still play testing)

The name's I refer to are the hero names of the charcaters and not my game group's real names .

I have a group of 5 players each controlling their own little group of 3 survivors (there is a lot of back story written and there are some role-playing elements). We will be playing once a month for several months as the campaign unfolds. We are play testing all sorts of hero rules to include with Apocalypse Z (not official).

This was s search , rescue , forage scenario with survival being the number one priority. The players chose their deployment zones and their general plan. One player did not participate in the game (the group with the Hell's Angel gang leader T-Bone and his thugs). He deemed it too dangerous and decided to stay back and keep watch at the farmhouse where the survivors have been hiding out (this was written into the campaign and that player actually did not join the first game session).

The survivor's plan was to keep most of the group together and establish a fire zone over looking main street. Frank Tower's group (SWAT , Rookie Cop, and motor cycle policeman) were tasked with getting on the roof of the office building (using the ladder on the building) and establishing a fire zone . Sean's group (construction worker, Aerobics instructor, electrical company repair technician ) and Lila's groups (dentist and comic book store clerk) also deployed in that area and were going to search the ruins of the building under construction as well as the small shops that lined the street.

Carlos Romero's group (The ex marine bar owner with the former bank teller and investment banker) , decided to deploy away from everyone else and use their silent movement trait (taught to them by Carlos) to sneak into town. It worked like a charm and he was able to penetrate half way down the block without incident and even though they heard blood curdling screams and gun fire the group maintained their cool and were able to siphon gas from two park cars. As they went to explore the bank, a former bank teller burst forth and almost made Steve (the investment banker) its lunch. Carlos dispatched the creature with his .44 magnum at point blank range.

Meanwhile the main group was attacked by former construction workers looking for flesh. The battled their way down the back alleys as more more and zombies became attracted to the gun fire. A desperate battle took place where one of the survivors was tragically lost and killed.

Sean's group foundsome ammo (on some guardsman) and Lila's group was in the battle from start to finsh and suffered the only gorup casualty.

Frank Towers (former SWAT) had the most kills with his MP5 from the roof top (8 head shot kills). All survivors earned campaign points and most of them survived to fight another day. Enjoy the pics.

As the survivors approach the outskirts they hear gunfire followed by screams. It seems some national guardsman were making a last stand. Zombies feast on the guardsmen.

Former construction workers now turned zombie rise out of the half built building .

The cops establish a fire base on the roof as Billy (the rookie) dispatches two zombies but still can't make it to the ladder.

04-1.jpg

The first close combat takes place. Phyllis goes hand to hand with a zombie and comes out on top (that claw hammer came in handy)> Sean watches closely ready to use his sledgehammer (D10+1).

05-1.jpg

As the survivors make their way up the back alley , Zombies have become very interested in all the noise and are now closing in.

06.jpg

Melissa Colbert , with her .357 and her "quick" hero trait (adds +1 to movement) acts as rear guard for the group.

07.jpg

Dr. Mossberg turns around as a zombie catches up to him and bites him on the shoulder. Too late for Mossberg he goes down fighting and takes the zombie with him. Dr. Mossberg did not rise again as the zombies closed in and devoured him in minutes. The first survivor is lost in the campaign.

Steve holding the two gas cans fights off a zombie as Carlos closes in with a killing head shot.

Billy gets up on the roof and a short time later gets surprised by a zombie that was able to climb the ladder (very slowly) behind him , the zombie was dispatched and the cops suffered no casualties.

Lila and Felicia attempt to start the Jeep but have no luck, they did find a back pack full of general supplies including food.

Frank's team finds ammo on the dead guards body.

From the Flaming Cobra section...

Will we see this in our LGS (and if so, when)? Mine orders from Alliance. Will it be available for supply through them? Is it available as a PDF download?

Need... Brains....

Matt,

What is the pdf release turn around? Love my pdf's and with my dollar cascading as it is pdf don't attract shipping and handling.

Lord Abaddon of Wormwood

You'll see it in about a month's time, I believe.

Picked up my copy at the LGS today, and I'm quite impressed! I haven't gotten to take too close a look at it yet, but so far so good. I assume you can pick and choose between this and the two Evo books? For example, I could take Zeds against the MEA, or WWII infantry? Is there any adjustment that would need to be made to account for different eras?

The game is primarily meant to be compared to Modern Combat, with extra costs for vehicles and such. They won't necessarily match up pointswise, however, so you'll have to play around a few times to get it down.

We actually didn't playtest it against WWII. All of our playtesting was against modern and our own Enclave units. We did keep in mind, however, the Evo main armies when we designed the rules. Kermit Bierut, the co-author, is a rules breaking, number crunching machine and he seemed to think they'd work well in either setting, with minor tweaks.

We'd love any feedback on the game, including any WWII and straight-up Modern mixes (don't forget, vehicles cost 50% more and air 100% more). Also, if you come up with some such feedback, do me a favor and post it over on the Exploding Goat Games forums as well as here. Some of our customers hit those and we'd love to have your comments (positive or negative...positive preferred  ) over there as well.

Now... we're wrapping up Apocalypse-D...lets see if zombies do any good against tyrannosaurus rexes!!!!
