Anyone play online?

Mongoose
I have decades of experience in RPGs but am brand new to Traveller. I picked up the core rulebook, GM screen, Central Supply Catalog, and 1,001 Characters books to get started. I'd love to be able to play the game online over Skype and maybe a virtual tabletop.

Do any of you play online? I am not talking about play by post.

Yes some of us play online.

MapTool (http://www.rptools.net/index.php?page=maptool) is used in some Traveller games.

Lots of play by post games are on down at the bottom. One merc game (run by bfalcon) and a traders and a high guard campaign run by me (also the PBP mod)

I appreciate it but I do not enjoy play by post at all. I'm looking for a real-time online game via virtual tabletop and/or utilizing voice chat like Skype, for instance.

Fair enough. Well, I can never get involved. Either the games are set on US time, or I don't have the time anyway :P Have fun!

US time doesn't have to be a barrier, might not always work out. In the game mentioned above the players range from US Pacific time (GMT -7/8) to GMT / BST. Another IRC based one I'm in has players ranging from US Pacific again to CET (GMT +1).

I'd consider that Sunday game but I own a ton of books for Mongoose Traveller and that's the version of the game I'm familiar with.

Well the slight difference in rules shouldn't be too much of a problem as the game is 95% roleplaying and 5% rollplaying.

These days I'm actually using more Mongoose Traveller materials than Classic Traveller materials as they tend to me more detailed.

PM me if you would be interested in learning more.

Do you also use voice communication software?

No, just typing.

Not all of us are on good enough connections for voice and it's harder to concentrate on the game with voice.

My online group has a long term Traveller campaign going that we run using the Fantasy Grounds II VTT software and Teamspeak3. While our game probably won't interest you as we play using GURPS, I have seen other Traveller games announced in the Fantasy Grounds forums. If you go to the Fantasy Grounds site and drop an enquiry in the forums, you might find something of interest.

Sorry. I refuse to do chat only. Voice does not distract at all from the game for me. It is what you do when you sit at a real table playing the game! I've played in a lot of online RPGs and chat only drags so terribly slow I lose interest fast.

I prefer just chat based myself. Just up to personal preference.

Like I said previously, I play in a lot of games online and run one currently as well. Every time we have done it being completely chat based the game DRAGS horrendously slow and people lose interest, leading to the entire thing losing players. I really don't understand the whole "voice chat breaks my immersion deal." These games are meant to be played at a table with other people. At a table you speak to each other verbally. You don't pass notes to each other to run the game. All the games I play in and run now use Skype for voice communication and it has enhanced things tremendously. It makes communication easier with not having to type every little piece of your thoughts, it speeds up play a lot, and our games have been able to retain players due to their interest levels not waning.

I suppose if I want to play Traveller I will have to make my own game. I would have preferred to play but none of the games I've seen being run so far fit what I'm seeking.
