For the Record, all the copies received by my FLGS are coming apart, just like the BF:Evo books and the VaS books...
I bought the only one which was not obviously already coming apart at the binding, but there are several pages wrinkled and difficult to read. The counter area in the back is a joke - far too dark to be usable.
The fleet books looked much better, and I expect them to hold up better, although I didn't buy one yet.
Last night I compared the binding of my ACTA 2e book to my old VaS book and I think I've discovered the problem.
Instead of using 2 seperate thick pages for the front and back, they are using 1 and attaching it to the Front and back, and the binding to it. My old MGP books which have stood up to massive amounts of perusing by several different folks at demos, glue the entire front page and back page to two seperate much thicker pages which are large enough to be the back of the inside cover and the front of the first page and back of the last page and the inside of the back cover.
Basically, if you look at your ACTA book and see the thick all-white page glued to the inside of the front and back cover, then imagine two seperate ones, one for each cover, being glued to the entire first and last page of the book itself, you'll have the way most hard-bound rulebooks are made.
The way the new books are being bound, the backing is susceptible to ripping away from the inside cover, as it's only point of adhesion is only as thick as the inside spine of the book - the binding itself. This in turn makes the pages themselves susceptible to coming undone and falling out.
I'm in no way an expert or trying to tell MGP how to bind their books. I'm only pointing out the quality is waaaaaaay down from where they were prior to doing them in-house. If this is the only difference, then perhaps it is as simple as I suggest and could be addressed without much hassle.
I just know I'm having to make excuses at every demo for the quality of the books, and it is getting old telling folks the important part is the rules in between the less-than-stellarly bound covers, and that is what you are paying your $25-$40.00 for. 8)
