An Unlikely Pairing - Standing Together Report

Da Boss

Mongoose
Another enjoyable tournament, good fun games and opponents and a new thing for me - a fighting partner!

My Fleet - Liati and Demos

My prospective Drakh Ally was unable to come to the tournement and so I was assigned a partner when I arrived - To my horror it was a NARN    player
- shame was to be heaped on me.

(nb: Luckily Digger is a very good sport and took my Centauri ravings in good spirit throughout the Day!)

Diggers fleet - Ka'Tan, Sho'Kar, T'Rann, T'Rakk

Game One - an great fun start - playing a Vree / EA Allaiance ( 4 Chronus and Thunderbolts + 4 Xir and a Vaarl) Lost 0 - 20,
Variant of Space Superiority
Stupidly (as was pointed out tome) I did not keep my Liaiti in hypersapce and suffered for it. No terrain meant my two centauri ships closed to weapons range quickly and exchanged fire with the combined fleet whilst the Narn followed a some distance, launchng fighters and damaging some Vree ships with a well placed energy mine. Two turns of fire (with impressive dice rolling aginst me, lack of dodges etc) meant that the Liati and Demos died for the loss of 2 Skimish Vree and 4 fighters in the dying Demos Explosion (even in death we kill our enemies :) ) The Narn got into weapons range and had an insurmountable mountain to climb and were quickly wittled down. Very sporting and fun oppponents and a disapointing but good game.

Game Two More Vree and a rival Centauri House - 2 Demos, Centurion, 2 Kutai, Xeel, 3 Xir (?), Vaarl (?) win 20-0.
An odd scenario - we started with two ships as did our opponents - so a Liati and a T'rann vs A Demos and a Xeel. Hmm good for us - Laiti cruised up the table to beam range of the Demos and misses!!!! :oops Arrgh! Rutarina dies against Zorth as the T'rann moves up launching fighters. The 2nd turn - Demos is crippled and although the Liaitis last rutarin kills both a Zortha and Tyzmm, the remaing Tzymm takes out the Laitis dodge  with a lucky crit - things look bad as the carrier adds to the hurt...............Then it all changed - we got a Demos on to help - they got a Kutai, the crippled Demos is killed, the Xeel loses its guns and the kutai is swarmed with fighters. There was no looking back and with our opponents only able to get a couple more ships on the table piecemeal which we outmanuever and kill we called it...........Again good friendly and accomodating opponents.

Game three yet more League (Pak and Vree) with Centauri masters - Liati, Corvan, Vaarl (?)), 2 Xir and 2 Pak Irkorta,
Blockade run variant - lost 0 -20,
A most fun game with old sparring partners Neil and Jim - loads of joking about and general allowing my Centauri side to rein free :D
What - Oh yeah the game - well it went very wrong - I messed up a few times and didn't maange to kill anything with my ships - the killing part of our alliance and left the Narn with very little chance - even though they very nearly finished off Neil's Liati (which had only stayed on to get more killing in :) ) Jim finally got to destroy ships with several tiramphant roars ! This was all despite Neils dispair at having -3 Initiative

Game four Yet more Vree!!!! with EA (3rd age) Allies - Vaarl,2 Xirr, 2 Xixx, Hyperion, 2 Olympus, Oracle
Blockade run Variant - won 20 -0,
Lt Dee and her EA player had no real chance in this one - setting up first along the long edge of the table meant that my Liati and Demos set up away from much of their fleet and cruised up, blasting a Xirr and a Xiir into atoms as they went past. The Narn surged into the teath of the EA ships (thats Narn for you  ) and the Carrier, battered but unbroken and firing as it went simply endured the blockade and escaped - although the other Narn ships were not so lucky...........again a good fun game :)

thoughts

I enjoyed it awful lot - good people and good games but............

I was disapointed that there was a not a single piece of terrain on any table (despite it being listed in the scenario) - if it was a problem could have brought some, as I imagine could others. I do feel terrain adds to a game alot and some in at least some of the games may have made them better IMHO
I also thought some sceanrios favoured certain fleets and meant some fleets (Narn, EA) began at the bottom of a very steep hill..........
The 2nd Scenario was frustrating for a number of people as the target number for ships (6+ on 2nd turn, and 5+ then onwards) meant that they never got a good part of their fleet on to the table..............This included our opponents in game two who never stood a chane once my Demos turned up to support the Liati (we started with 1 battle, 1 raid vs 2 skirmish) and they never got 3 of thier ships onto the table! I think a increasing chance of getting ships may have been better?

All in all thanks to all at the tournament - esp for a nice new Nemesis and some great new painted figures (Thanks Dee!!!) and of course my playing minion (opps) I mean partner - thank you Digger - you were very tolerant! :)

Well LEe and I got quite badly gubbed in the first game, then completely gubbed in every other, game but failed to come last, (Thanks Derina).

Can't remember who we played and what fleets they had. If it helps anyone else remember, i had 2 WS Scouts and some Nials, Lee had an EA 3rd Age Nova, 2 Olympus and an Assault Hyperion.

Picked up some minis at the shop and ordered the rest of what I need.

NOTE: Quiet on the forums today, we weren't all at Mongoose, I suppose the rigby may have distracted some more. Congratulations to Scotland on the win.

I had a stupid welsh man to put up with .....

My thanks also to DB for the bases, and I believe it was he who furnished me with a Creme Egg :P And I haggled over some bases from the bits box as well. thanks Matt

Sound bites of the day:

When I'm rummaging through the collection of metal bases, buying all bar a couple of them msomeone yells out:

"Matthew, all your bases are belong to LBH!"

And my own contribution to the day, after failing a Come About CQ check for one of my WS in I think the 3rd game:

"Flight Computer says no"

Nolo'Tars? I think I'm sorted for those, but thanks

Besides, I make it a rule not to buy painted minis, might set a dangerous precedent

You're quite correct, it was the third game, against me and dean and it was very original [and yes I can officially confirm] and quite funny!

I think what prompted it though, was me and dean going, "yeah i know" & "don't like it" & "want that one" all through the day! It proved to be very effective at putting some people off.

:D

"YEAH I KNOW"

If id been sent to the Hadrian wall site instead of the middle of no where in irland for my dig this weekend i may have found time to stop by as it is i JUST finished washing the muck off from being in a hole up to my eyebrows excavating a guy whos been dead for 300 years or so

An excellent day - And top marks to my erstwhile partner Da Boss who played a set of superb games even whilst being handicapped by the slowest ships in the sector!

The lowly Narn minion grovels at your feet master!

Sorry to Da Boss for not being able to make it :(.

Sounds like I missed a good day :(.

Brought low by a dodgie pastie (and not the new Drakh mothership).

Thats the Drakh for you - start wars, then don't turn up !!

Still the Narn were there for me! (and thats not something the Centauri say often!)

hope feeling better!

Sounds like fun - a lot of Vree players eh? I suppose that 25" bombardment Super AP, TD gun had something to do with that choice!

Were there any Shadow players there out of interest? I reckon two scouts would have been a good choice...especially considering the amount of ISA players...WS don't stand up to the Scout very well usually!

Richard brought a Stalker and of course a terrfying horde of 4 fighters whom I am sure cut a swathe through all that stood before him  (or not  )

2 Scouts seemed a good idea - I was suprised about the stalker as the one gun and only 3 AD at that seemed a little risky - but did not get to play it so it may have worked?

:D
