Eating maggoty rice, powdered milk, or each other, being close enough to the enemy to smell him in the middle of the night...THAT kind of fighting is just beyond my capability to imagine. *shudders*
I'll now add the little taunts to this list that happened at Guadalcanal between the two sides at night:
U.S. Marine taunt: "Tojo eats s**t!!!"
Japanese response: "Eleanor eats s**t!!!" (Mrs. Roosevelt, the 1st lady)
I think this was at the battle of Edson's (bloody) Ridge iirc.
