An Open Letter To MGP

My AT-43 Initiation Set arrived today. I opened it thinking "these are gonna be ok, probably good." Was I ever surprised!

The production figs are darned good! Not perfect, but a lot better than I expected! As advertised, the paint appears quite thin, so priming and repainting won't be an issue. But honestly, these are just fine as is. Maybe a wash here and there, and a touch-up or two (primarilly on the Therians) but other than that, I am VERY pleased with my purchase and will be buying more! My FLGS is even going to stock it (and he now refuses to stock any MGP whatsoever). The Fire Toad in particular stands out: it uses almost exactly the same splinter pattern that I'm using on my Tau, and the results are every bit as good as what I've gotten with my airbrush.

Here are my evals for what they're worth:

Packaging: 10/10. Well thought-out, very engaging cover art. The minis were well protected and didn't shift at all in all the shipping.

Rules: ?/10. Haven't been through them yet, but the rulebook appears well laid-out, lots of good art, it's full color, and printing is crisp. I like the staged approach where they introduce new rules with each scenario.

Figs: 9/10. Nice poses, and the painting is crisp, clean, and subtle. I like that they chose not to do eyes, just a wash for depth. All the figs look a lot closer to studio than they do to the photos of the prepaints! Personally, I'll probably dirty the humans up a bit more and maybe change a few accessory colors, but I'd be perfectly content to game with these figs as-is.

Accessories: 11/10. You get some barricades, dice, a tape measure and a VERY nice container that just cries out for some weathering. You also get a mat that the scenarios are keyed to. In short, you're ready to game with the contents.

How does this relate to MGP and SST? Read on.

I think everyone knows my stand on pre-paints. Will AT-43 ever become my primary game? Probably not. There's not nearly enough compelling bg yet, but hopefully that will change. The upcoming releases look good, and I will be buying them.

IF MGP were to take the same approach to SST v.2, and the product was of the same quality, then I think the game that I love would enjoy a resurgence. Some specific suggestions:

1) DO release a starter set with the pre-paints. If AT-43 can suck ME in, then the market should be wide open. Out of the box, ready to game is the way to go!!!! Not individual squads sold seperately. I think LAMI (or Caps) and Bugs would be the answer. Maybe two seperate starter sets?

2) QUALITY QUALITY QUALITY in EVERYTHING!!!! From packaging to rules to the sculpts to the pre-paints. I suggest you guys contact Rackham and find out what factory they're using for their pre-paints!

3) DO think very hard about not doing army books. I don't think I'm unique, but when I start a new army I research it, plan it, re-plan it before I even order a fig or pick up a modelling knife. Fluff is compelling: it allows "immersion" and attraction. I decided to do a new army for the upcoming world-wide campaign in July for WFB. The blurbs in the main rules pointed me in a general direction, but it was looking at the army books that nailed my choice. Now, I'm far more excited and involved than I ever could have been with what was included in the main rules. Without compelling background, we're just moving generic plastic or metal pieces around on a table...

4) QUALITY QUALITY QUALITY! Call me the quality "guru." That emphasis made my company prosper and guaranteed me a nice standard of living for the rest of my life. Satisfied customers usually means repeat business, ECSTATIC customers always means LOYALTY.

5) Don't hitch your wagon to the pre-paint star! Pre-paints should be limited to the starter sets ONLY or maybe also to certain larger models. If you supplement your initial starter sets with HIGH QUALITY un-painted figs, once you've got the hook set with the starter sets, people WILL buy. Another idea would be generic pre-paints supplemented with unique un-painted figs. For example, you could buy a squad of LAMI pre-paints, but then other figs would be available un-painted to give folks the opportunity to customize their forces.

6) Get new sculptors. If Hasslefree, for example, can turn out better product than you guys...then you guys are wrong. I first started using them for figs for my Skinnie Slaves when that release turned out to be such an abortion. Not only were they fast, courteous, and HIGH quality, but they even put candy in my orders and a nice little note!!!! That kind of personal touch makes a company memorable, and they have a customer for life now. I'm not saying put candy in every box of figs, but what I AM saying is start making your customers feel important and valued.

I'm not piling on the "BASH MGP Bandwagon" I'm trying to help.

Now, Taco and I are gonna try the 1st scenario for AT-43 on the dining room table...

Regards.

Word of caution... don't drop any of the big things...

And I've had one of my steel troopers seperate from their base

That's another nice thing about the figs: they have plugs. A little glue and voila! Your back in action.

As for miniatures: well, what can I say? Perhaps enlist some real b*stards to judge the greens (Frothers spring to mind) before showing them to the public. I'd also say that less should be released but what is should be better quality. Infinity has maybe 10 individual figures released per month but they sell because they are fantastic.

Pick me! Pick me! Pick me! If you want a quality b*stard, pick me!!! :-)

No more crappy miniatures...guaranteed.

Page 54/55 Honestly here... its a great picture and you ruined it by puting it between 2 pages..

Gauntlet, are you telling me you haven't seen a Playboy mag ever?

Sorry, I couldn't help myself

Probably hasn't...

Be nice, now. There are already too many b*stards here. Scipio is the quality b*stard, and I'm just a plain vanilla b*stard. At least it's more interesting here as over at TMP Matt is having "conversations" about international monetary exchange rates, heh. Boooring.

Hope his Colonel Salary can support 6 figures for $25.00..

After all the $$ I spent on crap releases for SST v.1, I think I owe myself.

BTW...there's a huge box in my basement filled with SST minis that I can't even sell on eBay. Likewise, there are two Army Cases full of SST minis painted to a high standard just waiting to be played again. Not to mention the sweater boxes filled with bug warriors.

Definitely an investment that didn't pan out...

And no, don't PM me for prices: I like them where they are...consigned to the crypt where they belong.

*shrugs* I still have three boxes of Pathfinders, 1 box of female MI, 1 box of regular power suits, 1 box of warrior bugs, 1 tanker and 1 plasma bug to paint up, and I haven't really had any cause to compalin.

So what are you complaining about after all? Did you imagine Mongoose sending you some players or what?
Sorry, but you can't blame MGP if there are no players in your area.
That ist where your work begins.

BuShips: I think the conversations are more likely as follows:

Matt: Pierre? Pierre? It's me, Matt from Mongoose. No...MATT from MONGOOSE. Oui. Wassup, mon frere! Kudos on AT-43! Hey, quick question. What was the name of that factory you told me you were using for your pre-paints?

Pierre: Matthew! Bonjour! Mon ami, I have neever told you zis!

Matt: Sure you did. At Origins. At the hotel. In the bar. Bambi, Trixie...remember?

Pierre: Ah! You try to shame me! I would neever haf told you zis no matter vat weemen were eenvolved! It is company seecret. Does zis concern BF:Evo perchance?

Matt: Gotta go, Pierre, call on the other line. My best to you and Raoul.

...

Matt: Zi Lin! You are killin' me! What is up with this crap you sent for our product????

Zi Lin: You say paint camofrage...factory girrs paint camofrage.

Matt: But what about the samples? The samples you sent were fantastic, and way better than what you're shipping now!

Zi Lin: You say you want awesome model for preview. I dedicate my two best painter for 100 hours straight. Model all awesome. You happy.

Matt: But I thought those were going to be the production versions...

Zi Lin: You CRAZY??? Where you get this idea? I need ten thousand girrs do that. Price go up big time.

Matt: But the eyes...

Zi Lin: We paint all round eye for Western market. Much success. When can I expect payment for order? We have also make Hello Kitty for you.

...

Actually, Scipio, BuShips is right....some bloke from Scotland was complaining about the price difference between US and UK BF:Ev...

No, to be frank, I blame Mongoose for dropping the ball totally on quality. There was interest initially. I, and many others, were out there promoting the game, running demos from the start, and I contributed to several of the published SST books...not to mention all the work I did that was either put on hold or just plain lost in the shuffle.

And you did what?

*putting on Samuel L. Jackson voice*

I don't know about that!!! I'm not gonna fly to mutha f*ckin Scotland to buy the mutha f*cka, so why should I care? Tell that n*gga to chill and move to someplace more in the mainstream!!!

*end of Samuel L. Jackson voice*

Wow. The man never ceases to amaze me. I'm in awe of him. He said it all right there...

I'm trying to organize and connect the german MI (which is a more or less unorganized bunch of lone fighters at the moment if you ask me).

And you can be sure, if anything happens like it did in the past - e.g. players being unable to get SST Stuff although they want to - I will complain at Mongoose myself.
And I am very good in that (anyone who really knows me knows that).

I also write a book (with 4 others) for our own RPG - it's getting about 500 pages. So I do not only know what it's like to do a corrector job, I also know it's like to write such a thing. And keeping all the different versions of one chapter apart from each other. And to promote the game. And struggling to keep things in time. And getting along with people that use every chance to complain about anything you wrote.

Things do not always go the way you want them, but I'm doing my best.

And yes, I hope Mongoose focuses on quality - they have to, because it's the only way they can survive.
If they screw it up with SST:Evo you can assume I will be one of the loudest and nastiest complainers.
I am very encouraged in bringing SST forward, if it means I have to make the people at Mongoose sigh when seeing they got another mail of mine, it be so.
Then it's for their own good.

Sometimes that can be the push in the right way you need.

Tut mir liede, meine deutsch ist nict so gutt, aber...

Ich kenne Stuttgart! Ich war eimal da stationert. Eine schones stadt. (Dative, accusitive...I get confused and I've lost a lot of my vocabulary).

Viel gluck mit die deutsche MI!!!

Ich mochte das die Deutsche spieler auch sagt "Qualitad! Qualitad!"

Nicht war?

(sorry for all the spelling and grammar errors!)

Scipio

I'm loving reading all of this, you know. We all have so much passion about the subject. Other companies should be jealous of Mongoose with fans (not fanboys, fans :!: ) such as we have here, really! This resembles a big Italian family, lol.
