An idea for a full starter package?

Perhaps a history/min-biography book too detailing with all the major personalities/events in the galaxy:

So we have Full starter pack containing:

Revised rulebook
Sky Full of Stars
Armageddon
Min-Biography fluff book
Revised counter set
SFoS counter set
10 'official' AcTa Dice
Measuring Aid

Bound in a limited edition leather cover.

That sounds very good to me.

Ah, why make it leather? I have an allergy to some chemicals that are being applied to leather.

Why not make it a full colour deluxe hardcover please? :P

i'd ay that the core box set should include all the rules (the revised box set doesn't include a lot of the updates that are in SFoS) and a minimalist fleet list for every race. just enough to get the feal for what each fleet is about, and play some basic games.

then for every fleet there should be an expanshion book that has various optional rules, ship varients, detailed historis etc.

this way whenever the core rules change a new rulebook and box set comes out, but when one or 2 fleets change only a couple expancion books need to be purchased.

this is fairly similar to what GW did back when i played warhammer. but the system worked very well because you only need to buy the box set to learn how to play, and if you like the game you can then buy one or more expansion books, at reasonably little cost as you don't get the rules for the fleets you aren't interested in.

Generally good but to keep costs down (and that they're unnecessary) you only need the one counters set - just make sure it's the most recent one, a "mini-fluff" book is not needed as there's plenty in SFoS and Armageddon, certainly enough for a starter set and finally no need to make it leather bound in a starter set - that's just adding £10 for most people (nice option for some people though...).

There are two additions though: the Drakh and Dilgar books so the player has all the fleet lists. The boxed set would now come in with:

Revised rulebook
Sky Full of Stars
Armageddon
Drakh fleet book
Dilgar fleet book
SFoS counter set
10 'official' AcTa Dice
Measuring Aid

This could probably be put together for £40 if Mongoose determined there was a market for it. Never-the-less, we'll have to wait for second edition in all likelihood though. On the plus side, for a boxed set, all Mongoose would need to add to the essentials (rule and fleet books) are dice, counters and a measuring aid!
