An idea for a full starter package?

Locutus9956

Mongoose
Hows this for an idea:

Full starter pack containing:

Revised rulebook
Sky Full of Stars
Armageddon
Revised counter set
SFoS counter set

Dunno what sort of price but it would be a good packaged deal and it would be good to be able to point new players to it when they ask things like 'what do I need to get started'

Hopefully with the "2nd Edition" of ACTA the revised ruleset will include all of that in it.

I agree though. I have everything but the Dilgar & Drakh books and have started collecting models.

Nope, from the impression I got from Mongoose. It'll be something like whats already out, except Armageddon and SFOS will be one book.

That would be good too. It would be nice if maybe they included the Gaim :?: , Drakh & Dilgar in the new book :D

They are mate

you don't need both countrer sets, SFOS duplicates the revised counter set. what we need is a complete set of counters though. LBH is working on catalogueing the missing ships...

does anyone have an idea when 2nd will be comming out? And does anyone know what changes are being considered.? Thanks for your time!!

I'm actually hoping it will be after 2007...the most recent product launches are coming a year apart and I'd just like the game to settle out for a year or so before jumping on a 2nd edition. I know it sounds like a long time but look at the history...
ACTA box set...RS 1, 2, 3, follow in quick succession...rendered next to pointless with the release of SFOS, which was (sadly) laughably full of typos and misprints, and a STILL incomplete counter set...supplement campaign books: E-M war and Dilgar, which STILL had editing problems (missing rules, misprints, missing scenarios) and the other which would see no counters until a fan stepped up. SFOS also brought on a call to fix broken fleets: witness the tournament pack which became a 3rd set of fleet lists, after SFOS and ACTA revised...and then Armageddon, which finially reunited the fleet lists into one, but still had (fewer) typos and misprints, and had changes to the most popular fleet (EA) which became the source of much derision by the fans - Sagittarius power bump, which was SO hated that wihin a couple months it was changed in S&P - and the still hotly debated Armageddon Warlock.

I DON"T want to see 2nd edition become something that gets thrown together in a few months, still has gaps, and gets revised within weeks in S&P.
I'D LOVE to see a well-thought out rules revision, addition of new and better game mechanics, and a book I would'nt be embarrased to get autographed by its author/publisher.

Sorry if I put some people off by that but this game has such potential and I hate to see "little" things keep tripping it up...agh...vent over. apologies.

Matt has said no more than one big supplement a year, so I reckon it'll be at least a year after Armageddon hit the shelves.

Chernobyl

Well said Chernobyl. I couldn't agree more :D

In the meantime however we'll sadly have to face the fact that the current state of the game is an issue which appears to be turning off new players. I've seen more than one occasion of a potential new gamer asking about the game at my local gaming club. When they ask the inevitable "what do i need to play the game?" you can nearly physically see their eyes glaze over when you tell them all the various books and additions they need to the basic game box in order to play competitively or to play the more exotic fleets. Thankfully there are alot of gamers who love the b5 show and its universe enough to still go ahead and get into the game but for every one of those there is a run of the mill gamer who is faced with the choice of the cost of starting ACTA or starting with some other games system which will be ready to go (out of the box) and at a cheaper price. For those of us who have been playing the game for some time i think this cost is underestimated. Personally i got onboard with the game just before SFOS was released. I bought my boxset, then 6 months down the line picked up SFOS and then just recently Armageddon. Spread out over that kind of timespan the purchases aren't a big drain on the finances but i think if i was going to get into the game now and had to make all those purchases upfront i might would seriously be put off just by the amount of money that would go out in that single transaction. Yes i know you don't need all of the rules supplements etc. to play the game but for most people there is a certain stigma or feeling of not being part of the group if they aren't playing with all the latest rules etc.

Mongoose, really need to bite the financial bullet and set up some kind of starters pack which offers everything at reduced price. It would be expensive in terms of the loss of revenue over buying the systems separately but i think ultimately its more profitable to make the system more accessible and get more gamers into it in the first place.

*rant mode off* lol

Cannot agree more...

What this game needs is the Rules in one book...not a box set and multiple other hardbacks.

Fleet book for the core fleets of the game.

Expansion books for additionaly fleets/specific eras.

Having to pay $25+ a year to stay current with the rules is not so fun. I would like to see new rules every supplement every two years that is an actual rules supplement (not a fleet book that is totally useless to some players like Arm was).

The off years do things like the E-M war, the Dilgar War, the Drahk war, the League wars...so that I do not need to buy new books every year to stay current with new game wide rules. This would also allow the new rules time to be shook out by the player base to find the problems. The war books could also have specific ships from the base races to fill in specific needs for those scenarios without unbalancing the tourney setting or the general campaign, much like optional rules used in many games.

Of course that is what I would want...opinions vary...

I also think packaging the rules is a good idea. However Mongoose has made it clear they intend to release a book every year. Every release is an update/amendment to previous rules, making it necessary to buy the entire chain of books in order to piecemeal the complete rules together. Can't say I agree with that business decision as a consumer. Hopefully V2 will have the complete rules in one publication.

A single major release each year was intended as an alternative to several smaller books each year (such as 40k).

I think the intent now is to release the 2nd Edition and then have updates in S&P (therefore free) with a collected book later on.

You don't have to have all those 40k codexes to play the game though...

If I want to start playing 40k I need to buy: rulebook, codex for my own race. Downloading FAQ's from the website would also be good idea but those are free.

From customers point of view GW's system actually means less books to buy(atleast if you don't play huge amount of armies).

Agree 100%. Lets see if it can be gotten right first time. Mongoose, I hope you're listening to this thread.

Some dice would be nice too. It's not really "out of the box" otherwise.

And a measuring aide.

No kidding, when I first gotten my first edition box I had the dice, but the measuring aide in inch...ouch...had to work for that one
