An Attempt To Identify Some Traveller OTU Product Identity..

Good Morning, All:

I've started on a quick and dirty project to briefly identify Product Identity that I believe is core to the Official Traveller Universe. In the event that Mongoose decides to start a list of their own, I hope that what I post here can be of benefit to them. (The less work they have to do to start off with, the easier it is, perhaps, to see something like this released soon as part of the Declaration of Product Identity in the Traveller SRD.) By no means is this list complete, and I invite others to contribute as they will, if they will.

First, I started with a list of all sector names that I could find:

And that's where I've stopped for the moment. I'll try to keep adding things as I can think of them. Others are encouraged to post here as well, to help those interested in third-party Traveller products to know what is and is not acceptable for use in third-party products.

In regards to UWP data, the data itself is considered Open Game Content per the blanket statement regarding UWPs in Traveller T20. The world names, however, are protected as Product Identity. There are too many world names in the OTU to list here, so I figure a blanket statement here would be appropriate.

No, none of it is in the Traveller SRD.

However, just as WOTC put their PI in the declaration of PI for their System Reference Document, it is possible that Mongoose will do the same.

Either way it goes, we can't use any of the above in 3PP products.

Absolutely. Aldebaran, Antares, Alpha Crucis, Canopus, and Deneb are all real stars and should therefore be exempt from any list of Product Identity.

Also, are those sector names from official canon products or just taken from travellermap.com? As far as I'm concerned, if it's not shown in AotI or any of the Alien modules or any other GDW product, it's not a canon name.

Actually, we don't know that at all. All we know is that those words and terms have been used in Traveller products in the past, but we don't know which ones are actually considered to be "Product Identity".

I note that many of those terms you listed didn't even appear in the T20 Product Identity list either.

As I've explained before in other threads, Product Identity is not just the use of a word, but the use of intellectual property. Think of it as the word plus what it means in the OTU. You can use real world star names and do something different with them, and it's okay. You can use common English words like Banners or Beyond with a different context, something that is distinctly not of the OTU, and you're probably okay.

You can get around copyright by saying the same thing using different words, if you know what you're doing. Intellectual property doesn't work like that, though, and that's a whole other set of laws. That is the crux of Product Identity, not copyright.

When in doubt, as always, either check with a lawyer, or just don't use it.

Of course, all of this is mute, as Matthew Sprange has posted that Mongoose will not be posting any consolidated list of terms they consider to be Product Identity.

"Aldebaran" can't be protected, "Aldebaran Sector" is iffy, and "The Aldebaran Sector of Solomani space" is off limits, as far as I can tell. Context is important.

Rather then put the energy in trying to define the list, I would put it into development of your own unique bacjground and not worry about Traveller's OTU at all.

My post just happened to come after yours - I was actually making a general point about all the attention to which individual words should or could not possibly be trademarked. The "Marvel trademarked Death" story is really just headline misinterpretation. I'm sure what they actually trademarked was a very specific use of the word.
