Age of Conan Miniatures Game Ultimate Question!

Mongoose
Dear Mongoose Publishing,

I have a dilemma that you have to help me out with, if at all possible. I am for the most part a Roleplaying gamer, having only played the occasional miniature skirmisher/mass combat game. I am now considering all options to seriously get into the miniatures side of gaming and there are plenty of options available - including your excellent Battle Field Evolution, SST miniatures game, GOMC, and even Mighty Armies (with your Buy One Get One Free special running this month).

Knowing that once I have made my decision to jump head first into a miniatures game - I have to ask you about the Age of Conan Miniatures game you were once advertising as launching in the near future. I do not want to jump into a new game and then find out that AOC is coming sooner rather than later. I would rather know if it will never come out.

Please try to help me - and other Conan fans out - by answering these multiple choice questions:

1) True or False: It's more correct to assume Tony Blair will not retire than to assume the Age of Conan Miniatures Game will be released in 2007?

a) True
b) False

2) True or False: The odds are better that REH's Conan will shake my hand before Age of Conan Miniatures game is ever published by Mongoose Publishing?

a) True
b) False

3) If Mat Sprange was a betting man (and maybe he is) he would bet the house that the Age of Conan Miniatures game will be published in the year:

a) 2007
b) 2008
c) 2009
d) That is info on a need to know basis, but one of the dates above are in the ballpark
e) The game is off our schedule for right now

4) Mongoose appreciates the fans of Conan and fans of the Conan RPG:

a) True
b) False

I'll turn any additional questions over to my fellow Conan RPG/Miniatures fans and hopefully we can get some answers about the Age of Conan Miniatures game.

Thanks Mongoose - I hope you can help me - and other customers - out.
:)

Well, I'll be interested in seeing what they come back with.

. . . but if AoC isn't going to materialize any time soon, of the games you listed I would suggest that Starship Troopers is your best bet. Battlefield Evo is getting a lot of press right now. . . but when you come right down to it, SST is Mongoose's flagship ground combat system and will get lots and lots of support.

Additionally, its the system most likely to have gamers that play in your area, as well as the system most likely to draw in new players if you hold demos. People just love space marines!

If a Conan miniatures game is not in the foreseeable future, I think it would be interesting to see if the community could work up a project to create such a game themselves. After all, you only really need rules to make it work. There are already plenty of miniatures on the market that are appropriate for Hyboria. Maybe not perfect, but there is some good stuff out there. Games Workshop's LotR line has some good ones (I wouldn't use Warhammer because they're too goofy-fantasy looking) and Black Tree Design has great historical-styled figures of different eras.

Thanks for the reply Matt - glad to know it will be out at some point.

I hear ya - Space Marines rock! I'm leaning toward a sci-fi mini game and support is obviously real important. I like what I've read about STT and the combat rules. Thanks for the input, Soulmage!

Well, Damien - looks like it will be awhile before AOC Mini's. Maybe the Battlefield Evo rules could be re-worked for Hyborian Age combat? I agree that there are some great miniatures available right now. I've been checking this site out for the latest and greatest (which include the Mongoose figs)

It would be nice to have a large scale combat system (miniature game), that could be made fit snug with Conan RPG. So that there could be an easy way to use abilities of RPG characters in combat somehow, in a limited manner, if they were being commanders or artillery, in the case of sorcerers.

I'm going to step in here and throw in my two bits.

I don't think it is likely that the company is going to make a serious investment in churning out miniatures or miniature wargaming rules, since over the past 30-35 years there are already plenty of wargaming rules and suitable leaden/plastic figurines that can be employed without any significant alteration. I have 12-20 different wargaming rulesets (WRG, 1e AD&D, D&D BECMI's "War Machine" & "Siege Machine", d20 [Cry Havoc and Fields of Blood, just to name 2]) and I personally don't feel any motivation to buy yet another. I have the requisite patience and modicum of ingenuity to modify that which does not already fit.

I'm told recently by the publishers that they still offer "Royal Armies of the Hyborean Age."

EDIT: There is also a ruleset called Broadsword based on RAotHA: http://www.waynesbooks.com/FGURPGs.html
