Age of Conan, Anyone playing? What do you think?

That sounds doable. $15 should not break me.

I dont know about PvP. I always get my butt kicked. It funny, I have boxed, done judo(poorly), fenced(assistant captian for two years on a university team), fought SCA for a couple years, and fought with shinae for years. A number of times I run into people I can beat into the ground like a tent peg, yet in on screen combat I get hammered. Very annoying.

Myself PvP bores me. Never been much of interested in it and I think I made mistake in server selection. PvP-RPG indeed. HAH! Not one bit RPG in sight. Only cowards who attack lower level fellows with half a dozen friends with them. Good thing all they have so far done is really get me quicker where I was heading anyway

Ordered a new Macbook Pro yesterday. I need to get Windows XP (is there a ceiling for how much RAM XP will recognize?) so I can install AoC and give it a go. Can't wait! :D

Ah cool. Thanks Dark Mistress. Anybody play AoC on Vista? does it play any smoother than XP?

Odds are worse. Vista is one hell of a resource hog. I have it running smooth but then again I have pretty darned fast computer running it...

I play on XP. Got the graphics maxed out. It's looks gorgeous.

AoC has introduced DirectX 10 spec, too. And, I understand it looks fantastic. I'm just not about to switch to Vista to see it, especially since Vista is going the way of the Millennium Edition by the end of the year as the new OS comes out.

You'll need a good video card. 4 Gigs of RAM is fine.

Choice of PvP or PvE is up to you.

Ah, this Macbook Pro is pimp. 3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 8 GB of RAM, 500GB Serial ATA Drive@7200rpm, NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT graphics processor with 512MB of GDDR3 memory. If I can use all that in Vista I may go that route.

Depends on the version of vista.

vista 32 bit is also 4 gig
vista 64 bit basic is 8 gig
vista 64 bit premium is 16 gig
vista 64 bit business and ultimate is 128 gig

this is what microsoft claims grants so take that as you will.

But as was mentioned I would wait since Vista is going away late this year or early next year when the new operating system comes out. I would just stick with XP until then. 4 gig is more than another to run AoC. I only have 2 gig and ran it on max settings and it ran well.

PvE is interesting because you can concentrate on just playing the game.

PvP... I quit WoW because I spent too much time on it, and I was always grinded into salt by some &$/&?$?/(?$/"?&$?(%&*$%/%& who were just high enough level to squash me, yet not high enough to get into actual trouble for it.

I was like "Hey, I'm new. Can you help me?" Reply : "STFU n00bz" and such.

It got boring fast.

My experience has been different. There certainly is some of what you describe.

But, as I mentioned before, that type of thing becomes less and less common the higher level you get. In your 20's, it happens all the time. In your 30's, you start to notice a drop off. In your 40's, the drop off is remarkable. In 50's, it still happens, but not every time you play.

I was in the low 30's, visiting Cimmeria, when I got jumped by five 22's. I could wipe the floor with any three of them, but five was a lot.

Still, I was holding my own, having killed two and working on my third, but getting low on health, when a passerby, that I'd never meet before, just stopped and joined in on my side.

He said he couldn't stand group attacks.

He and I are friends to this day. We trade a lot. He's become an armorsmith, and my toon is a gemcutter. I cut gems with magical properties for him and he provides the weapons to place those gems. We trade out and keep each other well equipped--all because he stopped to help me that day.

I do the same thing. If I see a fight where it's more than 1v1, I'll typically jump in on the victim's side.

My point being: Not all PvPers are butt holes.

You do run into people with "character".

No most are not, in fact the ones that are is a very small percentage. Unfortunately for me it is to big of a one.

I do agree that the PvP aspect of the game does sometimes bring out the worst in some people.

I've been pissed of a few times, sure. Especially in the beginning.

Then, it just made me want to be better at PvP. I learned how to circle strafe. I re-arranged my controls about a zillion times.

Now, I'm not bad. I don't gank, but I'll defend myself if I do get ganked.

I just played, as a matter of fact, and I got hit by two. I took out one, but the other got me. It's hard to fight 2 on 1, as it is in real life.

My advice for anyone thinking about PvP: Don't take being killed too seriously. Rise up to the challenge of PvP (a real person is a heck of a lot harder to find victory upon than a computer controlled NPC). And, remember, if you get ganked by more than one person, you're already at a disadvantage. Chances are you will lose. Even with a 1v1 fight, the ambushed person is scrambling to keep his life while the attacker was prepared before he struck.

It is so fun, though, when somebody ambushes you, and you turn the tides on them.

I love those moments.

I just finished a short story in Conan The Swordsman called The Star of Khorala. Howard left us hanging a bit with the ending to his story, The Man-Eaters of Zamboula. With Star, Bjorn Nyberg and L. Sprague de Camp step in to finish the tale.

And, they do a fantastic job. I enjoyed this simple story immensely.

The two main characters, besides Conan, of course, are Princess Albiona and her loyal man-at-arms, Garus.

I thought I recognized them when I started reading the tale. They're characters you meet while playing Age of Conan. You meet them in the tavern of the noble district in Tarantia. There are quests tied to these two.

Very cool!

I finally got Windows XP up on my Mabook Pro. Now I've just got to install Age of Conan, which by all accounts should take a day and a half.

Any servers you all can recommend for a n00b?

Also, how important in AoC is the right-click? Macs have always had only a single mouse button and my trackpad is the same, though there are ways to make it register a click as a right-click.

That's about right!

Any servers you all can recommend for a n00b?

I'm on the Cimmerian server. It's PvP (Player vs. Player), so, if that's not your thing, you can pick another. I picked Cimmerian because it's supposed to be the only RP server (role playing), but there is little RP from what I've seen.

Go with a PvE server if you don't want to fight other players. I like PvP because it adds a layer of grit and danger that PvE (Player vs. Enviroment) never provided me. But, if you've been reading the thread, PvP ain't for everybody. Me? I got bored with PvE the first time around. I stopped my subscription for several months (about six), then re-upped a month or six weeks ago. I started a new toon (character), and just made level 61 last night. It's fun. I like it. I'm going to take this guy all the way to 80 (max level right now).

If you join Cimmeria, let me know. I'll put you in my "Friends List" and be around if you have any questions that pop up. If you join a PvP server and decide you don't like it later, you can move your character to another server for a $20 charge (or just start another character on another server for free).

Be warned about PvP. In the early levels, it's brutal. People get on, especially those on free trial, and just hack away at everything that moves. Don't think it's always like this, because it's not. As you increase in level, you learn the game better and you don't get attacked near as much (although the attacking, called "ganking", never completely goes away...but, it's not supposed to since you're on a PvP server).

You'll think the attacks are relentless until you get about 35 or so. Then, you'll notice it will start to subside a bit.

There's lots to do.

- Questing is always fun.

- Grab some friends (or meet some friends) and go PvPing (ganking other players). That's fun too.

- Go PvPing by yourself.

- Work the Trader for coin. Equipment is much more important on a PvP server than on a PvE server. I always try to keep my toon in the best gear possible, where as, on a PvE server, I might skip some things if they're too expensive. On a PvP server, its always worth it.

- Resource Gathering, for your professions or to sell at the Trader. You'll get ganked by mobs (NPCs) as well as real players sometimes when doing this, keeping the game action oriented.

- Group Quests. Some quests can only be accomplished if in a group with other people. Healer is usually important. And, you'll find some of the best loot this way. But, the quests are tough.

- Work your profession, either for the Trader or for yourself. In the game, at level 40, you can pick two professions. My toon is a gemcutter and an armorsmith. You can also be a weaponsmith, an alchemist, or an architect.

As you can see, there's lots to do, sucking up hours and hours of your time.

Right now, mages are overpowered in the game, especially Necromancers. But, we've got a patch coming soon that supposed to nerf them a bit.

Guardians (my toon) and Dark Templars are some of the least popular classes on the PvP servers because it takes real skill to win at PvP. The mage classes, as I indicated, are the easiest to play and most popular.

Also popular are Assassins and Barbarians.

Healers (Bear Shamans or Priests) are always needed in group quests, so you'll always be invited.

Melee in AoC is fun, fun, fun. It's like an arcade game. And, that's just PvE. In PvP, it's even more fun because you're up against a real person, not some NPC that's never going to move around as you fight. In PvP fights, you'll see people jockey for position all over the place.

In PvP, you realy have to learn your toon, learn his combos and abilities, and know when to apply them for maximum effect.

In PvE, chances are you'll get to a point you'll be able to defeat the NPCs but not have to know what everything does as well as you do in PvP.

Mages in AoC are a bit less hectic--not like the melee classes. You just have to cast spells rather than split-second time blows.

Rangers, with their bows, are in the middle. They're a bit more complicated than mages, but they tend to do the same routines over and over. I like the melee classes because combat is never repetitive! It's just down right fun!.

Assassins do the most damage in the entire game, with their precision dagger strikes and poisons, but they are also the least armored in the entire game, having to rely on Cloth armor only. Still, they are quick, and a skilled player can dodge PvP blows from another player.

Guardians can take the most damage than any other class in the game, affording them some room to not excell in PvP. But, they do very little damage (which will hopefully be buffed up in an upcoming patch).

Word is that Guardians with polearms are doing better than guardians that specialize in sword & board, although I'm sticking with my s&b right now. I may re-pec my character for polearm later, though.

Right now, Necromancers are, hands down, the most powerful toons in the game. We'll see how that shakes out after the upcoming patch, though.

Hearalds of Xotli are also fairly powerful. They're mages that morph into hideous monsters wielding two handed swords. They can be damn tough.

Also, how important in AoC is the right-click? Macs have always had only a single mouse button and my trackpad is the same, though there are ways to make it register a click as a right-click.

Fairly important, but you can set your keys any way you need or want. Rt. click duriong auto move will steer your character in the direction you want him to go. Shift+Rt click on items will give you info boxes about them. A quick Rt click in a fight will instanty change your facing to that direction--that's real handy in a fight, but not near as important if you're going PvE. Rt click and move is also realy important in PvP fights, in order to have complete control of the toon during that time. You may find some other way to set up your keys, though.

I've got a gaming mouse, the Razor Death Adder. It's a three button mouse (rt/lt plus the roller) with two thumb buttons added. I've got it set so that I can do all my blows with my mouse, leaving my left hand free to control movement and other quick keys.

If you find you have questions, just let me know!

Awesome, thanks for the in-depth reply! You've given me a lot to think about (like getting a USB keyboard and 2 or more button mouse for one  ). I'd be willing to get on a server with peeps on the board for some questing/ganking. I've read a bit about PVP and though I'd like to wrap my head around the game first I'll definitely try it out. After all, the Hyborian Age ought to be represented as dangerously as REH wrote it.

I just got it a few days agao and I love it,having a blast in conans world :-)

Which server?

And...don't let my support of the game blind you to the shitty things that can happen. Just a few minutes ago, I was playing, and I saw someone being ambushed by another. They were both much lower than me, but the ambusher, as usually happens, was getting the better of the other.

I jumped in and helped the guy who got ambushed.

He seems to run away from me when the fight was over. I didn't attack him. I'm a level 61, and he's a 55. I'd smear the ground with him if we fought 1v1.

Well, not three minutes later, I run into this dude--the one I just helped from the ambush. I sent him a tell. He didn't respond. He was fighting some NPCs, so I waited for him to get done. In the tell I asked him why he ran from me--that I was helping him as he could see.

Still no answer.

He finished killing the NPC. Rested. Unknown to me, he set a trap in front of me to root me for a bit, then started attacking me. A friend of his showed up, and the two of them jumped in on me.

What a crappy thing to do.

But, that's life. And, that's people.

I went after the first guy with a vengenace and just about killed him when the other guy killed me.

When I rezzed, I sent him a a tell, asking, "Did you get my tells? Why'd you jump on me after I helped you?"

He replied, "You were there."

What a shithead.

But, again, that's life, and that's people.

Eventhough it irritated me, I like the PvP servers because this sort of thing CAN happen. It teaches me to not be too trusting of others' good will.

I am on cimmeria sever, name Jaison,he is a DT right now I am 23 and I have ran into a few people like that,bu i still enjoy planing it though.
