Advantage and Disasvantage

While reading a certain playtest out there, an idea came to me. During dice roll, if you have a distinct advantage, roll 3 dice and take the two best. If you have a distinct disadvantage take the lower two of three dice. If you don't have either (or you have advantage and disadvantage) then you just roll normally.

Thoughts, feelings?

I also think that a positive or negative modifier tailored to the
specific situation would make more sense than a more random
dice roll result. With "three dice, pick two" the result can still
be 2 (dice 1/1/1) in the case of a distinct advantage or 12 (di-
ce 6/6/6) in the case of a distinct disadvantage, so the system
tends more towards a game of luck than towards a simulation
of a specific situation where the character has an advantage or
disadvantage. In my view modifiers handle this much better.

All good points, it just came to me while day dreaming. The extra die would come in when the table doesn't know how advantageous or not something is; so the circumstance may not actually provide a bonus or inflict a penalty.

When I first started playing Mongoose Traveller, I was the referee. And I kept forgetting to add a difficulty DM to the players rolls. That one DM makes a world of difference, and covers a lot of situations that are internal and external to players.

I would think that it is the task of the referee to know or decide
how advantageous or not a situation is.

Fair argument. I guess this idea would fit best if a table implemented something like Fate's Aspects; though a +2 or reroll is already supported by the system.
