Advancement rolls and events

Hi,

that's my first post over here and I'm no native speaker, so the post may read a little bit weird.

Over at RPG.net we have a party-generation thread. We ran in a problem there, as the guy who rolls the dice at the moment quoted its rulebook as such:
TMB said:
Advancement: Each career has an advancement roll. The advancement roll is mandatory. If an Event has already automatically promoted the character this term this is in addition to the advancement roll (so it is possible character may be promoted twice in a single term).

Me and another poster can't find that sentence in our (in my case, both English and German) books. Are there different printings to explain this?
I did not find anything about that in the players guide, too.

Hello Walkir,

in the German edition you can find this sentence on page 10, under the
heading "Aufstieg".

However, in my opinion the German translation is quite unclear, becau-
se here it reads: "Sie können nur einmal pro Dienstperiode versuchen
aufzusteigen".

I think this means that a character has two chances for advancement
during each career term, one through events, and the other one through
the mandatory advancement roll - but only one such roll is allowed per
term.

Alas, I may well be wrong, it is really difficult to understand this part of
the German version.

That's not how I read it, and it seems like I asked wrong.

My question really is if there's an edition out there stating "If an Event has already automatically promoted the character this term this is in addition to the advancement roll (so it is possible character may be promoted twice in a single term)."

"Advancement: Each career has an advancement roll. The advancement roll is mandatory. " can be found in my copies, of course.

In my copy it does say that the advancement roll is mandatory, but nothing about getting an extra roll if you get automatic promotion.
On the event tables it just says that you get automatically promoted and nothing about rolling for promotion again.

I have taken it that you get the promotion and don't roll for advancement, but others may do it differently.

You have to make the advancement roll, since it also serves as the retention roll. My (as far as I know) up to date English PDF says you can get promoted even if you got promoted by an event:
  • [*]Advancement: Each career has an advancement roll. The advancement roll is mandatory. If an Event has already automatically promoted the character this term this is in addition to the advancement roll (so it is possible character may be promoted twice in a single term).
[*]If you make a successful Advancement roll, then you move to the next rank and gain an extra roll on any of the Skills and Training Tables for this career. You also get any benefits listed for your new rank. You may only attempt to advance once per term.
TMB, p.9

Thanks, that solves the problem - and it sounds consequential.
There is no list of changes between print runs out there, is it?

A very good point. The edition I have (print) doesn't have this line either, actually. I THOUGHT that's how it worked but it isn't exactly spelled out in mine.

Mine isn't as up-to-date as I thought!

And for reference from mine:

Traveller Core Rulebook said:

No mention of events in that part in my version.

I've not seen it written anywhere, but as discussed:

1. Advancement roll is mandatory, since it dictates whether you MUST stay in that career for another term (roll=natural 12) or whether you MUST leave that career (roll+DMs<terms)

2. The Event roll is also mandatory.

I count any Event promotion as being in addition to an Advancement promotion. In this way, it's possible to have high-flyers achieving high ranks at relatively young ages.
