Admirals of the High Seas Tournament - Results

Banning Ganguts would be a bad idea. Soviet cruisers aren't up to much, and the Gangut isn't the equal of other Battle level choices.

That was my opinion. A 4+ armour dreadnought isn't up to the same level as a Queen Elizabeth or Nagato class (battle) but is better than a raid level cruiser. Having 4+ armour obsolete battleships take up a raid and a skirmish choice instead of just a raid might be for the best.
This is particularly true when more pissant stuff comes out and when older "reserve" battleships are introduced.

If ships can take up two slots from different levels, we'll need rules for splitting points.

For example (Raid level game), if I take three Ganguts, each ! Raid, 1 Skirmish, I've used 4 Raid and 1 Skirmish altogether. I don't want another Skirmish level ship (all the russian ones are poo) I just want destroyers, but under the current rules, I would have to take a skirmish ship, or lose the point.

Then don't take that third Gangut...

I think the PL break down not having split points is a great way for balancing fleets in this instance as Poi pointed out (without meaning too...).

An "interesting" debate has broken out in historical naval wargaming circles as a result of the tournament and this discussion thread. In the red corner, a view that this is a "disaster for naval wargaming", foreseeing doom and gloom, dumbing down of the hobby, cats and dogs sleeping together, etc. whilst in the blue corner there is the "great stuff, bringing new blood into the naval side of the hobby" view. As of 0700A this morning (which is when I left home) it was shaping up for a vigorous deable on at least three Yahoo groups. I await the chance to review my inbox tonight with extreme interest!!!

I fail to see how VaS in any way impacts the old school grognards.

Nobody will be taking away their rules and forcing them to play VaS. And maybe some VaS players will want to get more in depth and try one of the more complicated systems?

It smacks to me of elitisim. . .

"Nobody should play naval wargames unless they learn our overly complicated and slow playing rule system! If they don't want to, they must be stupid!"

. . . which for no reason I can fathom (get it. . . fathom!) elitism is rampant amongst gamers of all stripes and calibers (heh! calibers!). Surprising since its pretty self-destructive to an already small hobby. A lot of gamers just need to get over themselves I think.

As a side note:

cats and dogs sleeping together

Technically it is "dogs and cats living together. . ."

Sex is implied, but not explicitly stated as part of the arrangement. :)
