Actual Play: Conan and the Ladies in Waiting

Session 11: Where our heroines rescue fair princess Radegund from clutches of evil worshippers of false idols…

Emilia and Julia look at the temple –once a safe harbour but now monstrosity of evil from the safety of the forest. Emilia knows that so they will mount up a search party –perhaps with dogs like her father would hunt down runaway slaves and criminals. Thus they must come out with a plan. Julia has given up all about Radegund –she might be as good as dead. Her plan is to get out of the forest as soon as they can -Emilia also. As far as the priest is concerned? He knows well his head would adorn the city wall if something would happen to Princess. Then Dexitheus would probably raise him up with Stygian magic from the dead so he could kill him again and again and again. Thus to the rescue they must go!

All three start to walk, guided with Emilia’s perfect sense of direction, towards the nearby castle where they met a poor knight –someone whom Julia had completely forgotten. It all goes well as Emilia tells how they are following the path but then they can hear a howl, wolves. All three look at each other and start to walk faster looking at some tall tree, preferably a pine or fir where they’ll be safe. As they see a gray silhouette of a wolf it is up to tree they go.

For a good long time all three sit on a good strong branch and look downwards where a wolf sniffs their tracks and looks up them hungrily. Wolves cannot climb trees, certainly not as well as humans, and hail of fir cones keeps the beast at bay. Wolf does not normally care of such things but dead accurate throwing from Emilia and Julia constantly annoys the hungry wolf that just cannot climb as high as its prey is. Ultimately the beast gets bored and goes to search for something easier to kill.

Then it is again time to run for the castle as none of three wishes to stay outdoors with wolves around. Actually Emilia points out that they are no trouble if they’d make fire but two others will hear none of it.

To make things worse, Julia falls down and starts to weep as they are going through particularly deep and treacherous chasm. This small ditch is enough to take all power out of Julia who sits in mud. On the other hand, priest is ahead as if he was followed by pack of hungry wolves. Emilia ponders on eternal friendship and eternal love. No contest. Eternal love! However, much to her surprise the priest turns and returns to help sobbing Julia. What devout and genuine fiancé! Julia on the other hand, starts to see Emilia on a new light and a dark shadow is cast over her face…

Despite seeing a wolf once more they reach for the dark grim forest castle at the last dying sun rays.

Meanwhile Agrippina is huddling under the bed. She hasn’t dared to move an inch but she ponders harder and harder what they have been seeing here. The temple was strange when she thinks about it now. Temples are ordinarily plain and white but had frescoes that were explained as being remains of ancient art. Those symbols were elements of fire and water with sun and moon above. Suddenly Agrippina recognizes the enemy; they are Asuran cultists! Those evil doers eat innocent babies in their secretive cult meetings and strive to undermine Mitra with their superstitious nonsense! Agrippina feels the righteous wrath growing inside her. How can they claim that evil is within everyone? Mitra is no evil. He is pure! There is right and wrong and right must prevail! Then she hears steps of someone walking past the room and all her courage flees her. Agrippina closes her eyes and curls even smaller praying Mitra and wondering what happened to her friends…

Inside the shoddy wooden castle three youngsters tell their tale to knight residing over this wretched land. Normally he’d give thought to claims of so young but when they are nobles and ladies in waiting of Princess it is altogether a different thing. A seemingly rational priest offers a tale that matches girl’s story and decisions are made. A messenger is sent for more aid –Black Dragon killers from Usurper’s castle. However, there is no time waste as Radegund’s life is in danger. Their best friend, Livia, is also missing.

Knight musters his army: a trusted sergeant, half a dozen men who double as foresters and general levy of every able bodied man who can raise a spear. Meanwhile women folk will be left behind to defend the wretched wooden fortress best way they can –and to guide Black Dragons to their aid. Despite exhortation of girls the knight decides to wait until morning. It is impossible to move his army at night, especially with all the weapons of war they need to lay siege on temple.

Feverish preparations continue through the night and a cart with oxen is prepared for a campaign. All the arrows and tools needed are carried. Knight knows his army has a chance. Despite everything the girls have talked, the women of temple are no warriors. Few tall women with spears -perhaps few bows and arrows- and a sword or two is enough to keep wolves at bay and perhaps scare off a thief but even his ragtag army is more than match to them –if only they can get past the palisade.

At night Agrippina has finally collected enough courage to leave her hiding place. She crawls to the door and looks around from the room. The corridor is empty. Agrippina listens carefully and can hear sobbing and crying from close by. She can hear now that their servants are in another room. However, getting close would require her to get to corridor and out of the empty room and safety of hiding under the bed. Radegund is nowhere to be seen. Perhaps she has been eaten? By those monsters she didn’t see? Idea makes her shiver and she returns to safety of her hiding place.

Next time Agrippina is scared out of her wits is when she notices two women walking to room. She is petrified with terror as they start to make the beds. However, Mitra is with her that morning and they do not notice her. However, she also hears that not just servants but knights too have been captured. Asurans have not dared to go into underground room but have bolted the iron door tightly. Agrippina knows that she should seek safety beyond the iron door –surely the knights would protect her. However, the noise keeps her still curled up and hiding. She might be cold, wet and hungry but she is still alive.

During the afternoon the army of a knight, sergeant and a few dozen men finally arrives to temple walls. They notice that temple gate is tightly closed and there is no movement. However, the knight is a knight and thus knows well warfare. He immediately orders a battering ram to be constructed while bows and arrows as well as tools are picked up from the cart. Few women accompanying start to make dinner for men. They are preparing for a siege. There is not much to do for Julia and Emilia. Thus they mostly just sit quietly and sulk in the makeshift camp. Emilia is more daring and occasionally she goes to look at the menacing fortress the knight strives to overcome.

Approach of an army causes huge ruckus in the temple. The Mistress barks orders in her high and powerful voice and women start to run back and fourth. Agrippina bolts into action as she hears the alarm. Worried that the devilish Asurans are on her back she bolts from her hiding place and runs to corridor hoping to get out before they can find her. As an adult woman armed to teeth with a sword just pushes the frozen Agrippina aside barking her to run faster she realizes they are actually not looking for her. No. There is something else. Perhaps a rescue has arrived to slaughter these monsters? Actually the raven mask she wears hides her face so well. Everyone is preparing to defend the temple and has thus no time to yet another young temple maiden running about scared and confused about.

Agrippina runs to the black iron door that was their doom the last time. She prays that the knights would be there. At the door she opens the bolts. They are thick and heavy –and thus take all her strength to push aside. As soon as the bolts are on their way she tries to open the door when she is certain that no one is watching. She does not know what happens she is flying to darkness pulled by a strong hand.

The knights beyond the door are still there, sweaty, naked, bloody and very much alive. They have killed everything in the darkness before and now are ready to get out through the door. When door was opened they took this chance. They pull in their enemy –a treacherous woman of the temple- and go for a kill.

Fair headed knight raises his hand to cut throat of robed young lady but stops just before the strike. He knows that high pitched whining all too well from tournament. Pulling his strong hand from her throat he peels the Sister Agrippina from her robes to his arms. Her explanation of what is happening is fragmentary but enough to tell him what is going on. The Mistress of the temple has betrayed them and holds Radegund as hostage. She is simply too important to be killed outright. There is also help on its way –temple is under siege –and that gives them a chance. But it demands them all to wait for now. Agrippina huddles next to this strong knight –not daring to touch him but curling to sit close to him.

As the afternoon turns into evening the battering ram is finally ready and guards posted. The bane of all soldiers –boredom- sets in. They are running a siege for real now.

However, the knight leading the campaign knows he has to talk with the enemy –until now a friendly neighbour of virtuous ladies of this temple. There is a practical reason too. His rag tag army cannot storm the palisade –his motley peasant levy could never scale those walls without ladders. Making ladders would take most of the night and probably tomorrow morning. By that time or a few days later the Black Dragons will be there. He has to see if Radegund is safe so he can at least report it to Black Dragon company commander sure to be in foul mood. Thus he goes to wall and makes it clear that he wants to see Radegund –immediately. He also makes sure that if Princess dies everyone inside will be skinned alive and he’ll burn down the temple and everyone inside.

Meanwhile Mistress decides to play time. She knows the dreaded Black Dragons will come -and cruel Priests of Mitra on their heels. Yet she holds the greatest treasure of entire Aquilonia –perhaps enough to talk her and Asurans a safe passage. However, the knight seems to hear no sensible trade or her pleas. He just wants Radegund –what a wretched little nuisance! She also knows that battering ram is ready and knows her virtuous maidens are no match to men with weapons. Knight might be poor but he has foresters –real soldiers. Thus she orders her hostage to be taken into scene. Perhaps then she can talk her worshippers a safe passage out of this mess?

The iron door looks to be bolted tight but three knights inside –all naked, cold and shivering- wait for their moment. At first they want to storm enemy defences from behind –hopefully when attackers storm the palisade but loud screams from Mistress and knight make them change their plans. Now they can see Radegund and take initiative.

Fair headed knight is quite young in age –about the same age as Agrippina’s furious older brother. However, he has killed a huge Pict warrior with a sword and axe before. The other men are also killer elite. Their plot is simple and ruthless. They send Livia –or whatever is her name- out to Radegund and stop her. Then they will strike. It is a bold plan. But fortune favours the bold. First they need bait…

Livia trembles in fear but knights plead is an order to her. She runs –trusting to blue eyed fair headed knight limitlessly. As Mitra’s true servant runs to Radegund she knows no plan but to hug her and make her fall. Radegund’s two escorts –grown women with swords- turn to wrestle her off the Princess and then it is too late. Three men run with naked swords and murder in their eyes. Two women are hacked down in an instinct.

Knights split in general confusion. Fair headed grabs Radegund to his left arm –while Agrippina hangs unto him in a death grip. Weight of two girls is nothing to a seasoned knight. He pulls back to defend her charge and there are preciously few temple maidens armed with staffs who dare to challenge a man waving his sword screaming murder.

The two other knights run through surprised group of Asurans to gate and hack open the simple ropes holding the gate closed. It seals the fate of temple. When attackers see the gate opened –the knight leading attackers screams orders and they all simply run to the breach in defences. Most confused melee begins immediately at the gate.

Julia hopes she is somewhere very far away but as soon as Emilia and her fiancé run amidst general confusion and struggle she follows –and stays well behind the fight. Emilia has no qualms getting in –like a warrior princess she always wanted to be. As the melee ebbs and flows Emilia picks up a dagger from one of the wounded. Then it is time to do her share! Meanwhile Julia shakes her head in safety of gate –and crouching behind priest.

But Emilia must do great deeds to win heart of her true love –and cook to him too! But first thing first! Emilia strives to see a suitable target and sees a scared woman standing still. She bravely attacks her from behind and hits her target squarely on her back. As Asuran falls down on her knees Emilia dances around with the dagger high in her hand. She shows her tongue to completely humiliated enemy. Nyah nyah nyah! I am so good.

However, all this gives her opponent time for one last desperate push and she rises to punch her young –but equally sized- opponent. Emilia expertly wields her dagger –and misses. They both try to fight but soon it boils down to what true primeval killing machines do it –by pulling hair out until other one quits. It is in this trial of strength that Emilia feels herself most woman ever! Her hidden warrior instinct unleashed! At that point a peasant man from levy hits her opponent to head and Emilia rules alone the battlefield –as a true victor!

Julia has kept her eyes on Emilia during the whole battle. Why couldn’t she die!

Finally, when the struggle is over Princess Radegund takes over the situation. No matter how skilled the knights might be –she is still the royalty. As her first decision she’ll order the Atlantean sword given to her and then the evil temple sacked –a prize that brings smile to poor knight. Meanwhile the dead and dying are simply thrown to ground cellar used to store potatoes until now. This is Radegund’s first trial and as such she wants to make sure she dispenses her justice fairly.

Mistress explains that Asura is not a wicked God but merciful as Mitra but Agrippina is astounded of such evil lies. Even more absurdly she explains that the evil beasts in cellar were actually men who were hidden as refugees of oppression. Radegund knows the truth and will hear no more of her lies. She notices that Mistress obviously has a secretive mockery in her mind –but Sister Radegund is a true servant of Mitra. Radegund herself thinks that it would be best to kill the wicked immediately. However, she is merciful to ask for advice from her best friends first.

Young priest thinks that death is too punishment for the worshippers of false idols. Emilia listens to her fiancé and naturally agrees to his lead. He must be right. Sister Agrippina agrees that they are wicked altogether and as such should be burned immediately. Julia thinks that burning is just fine but they should send the leaders to Tarantia so Queen Zenobia could kill few evildoers too –and they could arrange trial of some kind. Radegund ultimately agrees to Julia’s concerns. All noblewomen should be given a fair trial and agonizing torture at Tarantia while the rest should be punished immediately. They all grinningly explain knight what they want and knights get on with their grim task. Meanwhile girls sit on cart to get as good view as possible.

Thus a giant fire is started in barn cellar. Asurans love the flames –so they shall perish in flames! Screaming prisoners are hurled amidst heart breaking begging for mercy to their deaths -no matter their age. All knights and lesser men see through the murderous spree. They also start chanting Glory to Mitra to swallow with faith the insolent screams of weeping Asurans. One by one the Asurans are thrown to fire while Sister Agrippina talks to them the eternal Mercy of Mitra!

Yet Radegund is a great lady of her word. She saves lives of Mistress and few older maidens –for a fair trial and agonizing torture- in King’s court. Now the knights also look at Radegund with new eyes –and a silent approval. She has truly proven herself to be a true queen –both wise and merciful- no matter how young she is. She is obviously a true Aquilonian lady of true faith and fervour. Glory to Mitra! Glory to Mitra! Glory to Mitra!

All things end in good time and so does the trial and punishment as well. As they mount up and the journey back to King’s castle starts Sister Agrippina nods virtuously and looks forwards to her future. She immediately blushes the most Livia-like thoughts she suddenly thinks on her own. Certainly she made an impression that that tall fair headed knight –the man, no, a hero, who saved them all. He had also time to look at the fairy tale princesses he so valiantly rescued from clutches of these evil doers. Livia smiles to herself. He definitely got a good look of her too. She blushes on thought. He saw how tall and willowy she is; her flowery grace and knows her most impeccably virtuous reputation. And she is a heroine too!

Meanwhile the fair headed knight spats blood and sweat to ground coughing from smoke of pyre. He takes a one last look over his charges. There is that skinny little twig -a temple maiden. She is still soaked in her own pee and who is -as he saw her explain in detail in court- a complete strumpet boasting her “riding skills”. But enough of that, he has a job to do, to escort Princess Radegund, another hellion, back to her home…

So Ladies in Waiting finished off their perilous adventure. Many more adventures would be ahead of them. These stories would also be told to young maidens of Aquilonia so that they would learn to become good and decent wives…

Session 12: Where our heroines upon returning home get kidnapped by evil pirates…

With the return of Princess Radegund from her perilous journey the good people of Tarantia are given a rare spectacle of public execution of a noble woman for her wickedness. The other ring leaders are also executed and their heads will adorn the city wall as a warning to other evil doers not to oppose Usurper or his family.

The good people of Tarantia are so upset of evil plots that they immediately move to the streets to carry out a pogrom against all foreign looking evil doers in a city. The ensuing rioting keeps Black Dragons busy for next few days. Pallantides himself hangs those agitators who get out of hand although good priests of Mitra are released immediately. Their punishment is meted in a banquet by Archpriest Dexitheus who praises their vigilance. Pallantides himself cannot but agree to blessings of Mitra as his own gambling debts were wiped out thanks to random murder of notorious Nemedian money lender during the riot when crowds tore him apart. Rumors of Pallantides’ trusted knights inciting the already bloodthirsty mob standing next to mansion are naturally nothing else than false and evil Stygian lies.

With Dexitheus and Zenobia thanking Mitra for safety of Radegund the young princess has gotten one of her already famed great ideas. What else would be a better way to show her boundless respect to Dexitheus -and Mitra- than give him a gift? Emilia has noticed that none of the statues of Mitra has a third leg and thus Dexitheus will be immensely happy to see one! Julia thinks that it is not a good idea but Radegund has the final word. Then they get to serious work of selecting a ribbon to wrap their gift. With Julia trying for one last time to turn Radegund’s head she nods and giggles and decides that pink ribbon it will be. Then Radegund orders Livia –who has the most slender and longest fingers- to wrap the gift which she does with shaking hands and red cheeks.

With the banquet Radegund proudly presents her gift which is kind of misunderstood amongst the priests. Dexitheus slaps the Princess so hard she falls on the ground and starts to weep. Meanwhile Julia tries her best to be invisible moving backwards to hide amongst the crowd. Livia wets herself and falls down to her knees. Emilia is so sorry that he didn’t like it. Perhaps it was the pink ribbon? He is a man so he would have probably wanted a blue ribbon in his gift instead?

There is no mercy from Queen either. She is practically trembling with anger on her daughter. It is just this sort of evil wickedness that there should not be! Needless to say, Queen herself will ultimately administer a fair and just punishment to her daughter. After all, she is well known for her gentleness of beating her children only when they have done something wrong. Nor is this the first time nor last when Princess Radegund has been reprimanded for her wickedness. Zenobia thus reprimands her daughter –and her companions- personally until the rod breaks in half. Then she is put to sit in her room for the time being. That is until both mother and Dexitheus’ wrath has been simmered. It can take a week at best – months at worst.

For next days Radegund is forced to sit in her quarters all alone which provides much needed relief to castle’s guards and servants. All she can do is sulk in her room and her ladies in waiting grow bored in their own room. Surely she’d like to see them! Three girls run to see Radegund to relief her spirits –and theirs too.

Radegund is sulking with her shoulders down after hearing an endless lecture from no less than four old priests about proper morals. With priests gone her spirits are uplifted with her friends arriving. Still, she is all alone. All she has is her three ladies in waiting to accompany her and dozen or so servants ready to fulfill her every whim – the perfect disaster in making.

Julia gasps on seeing Radegund’s room. Thick carpets cover the marble floor while its walls are covered with huge silk curtains with pictures of past and future glories –like military campaigns and royal marriages. She knows nothing of how expensive silk from distant Khitai is -but she knows all too well how much men love it on a woman. Livia notices the golden goblets and pile of food and servants –all signs of immense wealth. Emilia hugs her best friends and they run to see outside from window. Radegund knows she cannot leave the room. The guards know under penalty of whip not to let her out and they do check out every one leaving the room is she is the princess –that trick stopped working when she was a winter younger and was put to sit in her quarters for last time. She had tried to start a fire for warmth in attic of Mitra’s temple inside the castle. Priests had found her and stopped her when she was trying to turn over open oil barrels stored there to add some more oil to the fire.

Radegund listens to Emilia explain her expert wilderness skills and how much she knows about the forests. Indeed, the small unspoiled patch of land right next to castle on gully appears huge and forbidding and mysterious wilderness. Emilia wants to go there but since they cannot they decide to start camping adventure inside Radegund’s room. Emilia thinks they should all go out and it sounds great.

Radegund orders a tent –no make it two- to be brought to her room so they can play. Emilia takes the lead here showing how to put up a tent on carpets and tie it up on furniture to much admiring girls. Emilia is so good with these things! Once inside the tent Radegund tells other girls how she has lately heard all kinds of gruesome things about pirates who chop off heads of cowardly traders. Girls giggle at these exciting things and they start to plot how exciting it would be to be pirates. Their small empty heads work feverishly trying to prepare a plot worthy of Princess of Aquilonia…

It all starts with the Princess Radegund announcing her servants that she is now campaign in wilderness. Thus she wants now a roasted boar for food they have hunted down. Half a dozen servants fly to kitchen to pick up heavy load and wait for it being prepared. Another half dozen servants will have more difficult task. They are to provide wild beasts for Radegund to play with. The servants know for sure that Queen Zenobia has some pet panthers that are dangerous. Even their small cubs have big teeth and voracious appetite for small and skinny servants. They flee as a crowd to find someone to handle the animals. It takes time and they know it. However, they also know Radegund would whip them mercilessly unless they can provide her two or three panther cubs.

With the servants away they four girls spring into action. Livia picks up all the food they need –that means honey and sugar. Meanwhile Emilia and Radegund tear down all the silk curtains and sheets to prepare for a rope. Julia has no clue how to make a rope out of sheets but Emilia is an expert in all things practical –at least on her own mind- and shows to enthusiastic girls how to do it. After few moments they have everything needed to make good their escape.

Emilia takes the lead with Radegund running in tow. Julia tries to think she is the brains of this affair but all she can do is drag Livia to stay with them – and carry her part of the gear. Emilia expertly ties the rope and Julia takes over. She is very hesitant to put her life on a rope. Emilia ensures her that it can take all their weight –which makes Julia to push Emilia to go first. If she dies, that is just good. Livia is totally expendable too but while she might be tallest she is also lightest of the lot –she might survive and the rope breaks on everyone else. If Radegund was to die they would all be beheaded at best or tortured to death at worst. Julia herself? Well, she is the one making the decisions about the rope. Thus Emilia it is. Emilia grins and jumps to rope happy her best friends support her all the way. Julia cannot but curse her bad luck as Emilia climbs down unscathed.

It is not that they have not thought every single detail. Radegund wrote earlier a letter to her mother so she won’t be worried. Well, actually Livia wrote it in her perfect handwriting and Radegund signed it and then sealed it with her ring. Then Radegund scribbled a wild picture of all kinds of pirate symbols she has learned from her tutors to amaze her mother and tutors.

“We have gone to play pirates in a secret hideout in nearby huge forest. We took honey and sugar as hostages. They are our huge prize! We will return in two days. I’ll chop off many heads. Princess Radegund.”

As they slide down the rope they left the letter to window table so it can be seen. As the four girls descent down the castle wall they notice that thunder storm is arriving. Without bothering to return they put out ladders to move across the moat and reach the outer wall. In the other wall there is a small secret door for to serve as a sally port, one who is certainly no secret to girls who have spent all their days roaming the castle and looking to every cranny and nook. They slip to the gully and bushes moving to the forest as the storm clouds are gathering. Emilia quickly builds up the tent and starts a fire and they all get into their tent for well earned lunch. Emilia also explains that the rain would be short but intensive so they’ll have all the time in the afternoon to play in the forest.

Eventually the servants return with roasted boar and then even the panther cubs are provided but the play turns into a surprise and then dread. All that the servants can see is torn silk, flattened tent and food trays turned upside down. They also find a rope and a wet note. Fearing worst they alert the guards and bring bad news to Queen. Princess Radegund has disappeared.

Queen Zenobia is highly educated lady and thus she can read with ease the note she has been brought by servants. She quickly reads what ever few words of scribbling can be deciphered from the water soaked and badly tarnished piece of paper. Pirates… Secret hideout… Hostages… Huge prize… In two days… chop off heads. It is written with a delicate and sophisticated hand of a noble lady –certainly forced at dagger on a throat. Even worse, it is signed with Radegund’s own childish and a bit uncertain signature and accompanied with all the cruel signs of the pirates, swords, death’s heads and the like. Her own daughter has been kidnapped!

Queen Zenobia might be a lady of considerable restraint but this is surely not one of those moments! She has no time to whip Radegund’s maids to teach them how to protect her daughter nor will she personally strangle the obviously incompetent guards. Oh no, she marches back to see her absolutely no good husband and gives her a lecture every married man knows all too well.

Then it is time to spit on face of Pallantides, Commander of the Black Dragons. Man grits his teeth but bows to Queen. As soon as she leaves he’ll combine a company of men who’ll make even bloodthirsty cut throats of Free Companies look like shy temple maidens shivering on their wedding night. With these men he’d ride to the slums and unleash hell that scum of the city had never seen! Death would be his bride that night!

So Ladies in Waiting finished off their perilous adventure. Many more adventures would be ahead of them. These stories would also be told to young maidens of Aquilonia so that they would learn to become good and decent wives…

Session 13: Where our heroines meet strange monsters of dark forest…

With the rain over –although to girls it talked about it as if it was a perilous thunderstorm Radegund immediately starts up a hunting party for food. They all try to find out some squirrels for food and torture but unfortunately they can see none. Perhaps they are too well hidden or clever? Radegund does not allow this minor setback hurt her beautiful mind. The next obvious target is bunnies –things Julia vehemently tells are really evil bad bunnies.

With Emilia in lead they scout the forest to scour the local flora and fauna. Emilia has her bow ready and ultimately they find a rabbit hole. Then it is simply a matter of ambushing the animals for their food. They camp close to rabbit hole knowing that sooner or later the bad bunnies must come out –and after eternal waiting it happens. Emilia shoots the bunnies with her bow but does not really seem to hit them. However, the dangerous bad bunnies sit in the grass eating leaves seemingly impervious of the deadly threat from Aquilonian noble ladies on their hunting trip. Emilia is getting desperate as other ladies look at her impatiently as nothing seems to happen. Thankfully one of the last arrows Emilia fires hits one of the bunnies scaring the other bad bunnies back to their hole. She then throws the stupid bow away. It isn’t working!

But then she can show off her expert skills in skinning the animal. Emilia is truly in her own element. She explains how to skin wounded rabbit to fascinated crowd. Now you!

Livia is first to try. Her approach is to try to push the knife through its skin while keeping her eyes tightly shut. She fails miserably as Radegund and Emilia giggle on top of their lungs. Julia is next and she looks at the bad bunny that is still twitching and she drops the knife to ground screaming. Bad bunnies are so different to men who are just –well- men. Radegund licks her lips and gets ready to chop of rabbit’s head and show it off to Livia and Julia but Emilia goes first skinning the animal expertly and preparing a meal for them. Single rabbit can hardly feed four ladies but that is why Livia emptied the entire room for proper food –sugar and honey.

With their bellies filled with meat, sugar and honey it is time to ponder some more monster hunting. The talk eventually turns back to squirrels who Julia calls scary squirrels. Livia knows for sure their power is in their tail and everyone agrees with feverish glint in their eyes. They want blood! Soon these Aquilonian ladies degenerate back to barbarism –the natural state of mankind!

In the harsh barbarian world of Hyboria only the strongest survive! Princess “Sword Hand” Radegund has plenty of it. Her trusted advisor “Tracker” Emilia has devised a cunning plot. They have put out some of their meager rations to lure the scary squirrels into a trap. After what seems like an eternity the first squirrel comes to see what crumbles there might be for it.

The hunters spring into a glorious action. “Shaman” Livia and “Long hair” Julia throw rocks as fast as they can but ultimately it is Emilia’s stone than stops the fast moving scary squirrel. With their prey seemingly dead the hunters of the tribe arrive cautiously –ready to hit it again with more rocks. Ultimately they surround it and tribal leader Radegund prepares to cut away its tail –that’s where its magical powers are!

Unfortunately right at that point the scary squirrel jumps alive and starts to run in circles to avoid the hunters around it while girls try to stampede it under their feet again and again. Ultimately someone –or all of them- succeed in their perilous task of killing the monster –although not before Livia is hurt with Radegund jumping on her feet. Julia immediately steps back wisely and Emilia hasn’t seen a day without bruises in her feet. However, they all bravely fought together and killed the monster as one.

As brave hunters they naturally crucify their prey to tree as a warning to other monsters. Radegund is here and she’s a Princess –and you better not to forget it! After admiring the smashed squirrel it is time to retreat back to their castle for telling tales of their great deeds.

The night starts with girls huddling together next to camp fire and talking things. Naturally the talk soon goes to gross things and ultimately to wild stories. Julia has more than few stories to be told. She tells the other girls of gruesome stories of unfaithful men who their jealous and furious wives have severely punished, some times poisoning, occasionally stabbing and even castrating. The stories are too yucky to Livia and everyone agrees that Julia tells great stories –especially Radegund. Then it is Emilia’s turn. She tells blood curling stories of little girls who wandered too deep into great and dark forests only to be eaten by wolves –and worse. Emilia makes it clear that forests of Aquilonia are evil and bewitched places. Julia feels the noises outside particularly disturbing and shadows flickering all too uncomfortably eerily.

Then Livia starts to tell her stories. Her stories are uplifting stories of virtuous maidens of Mitra who have gotten into hands of evil foreigners –especially Pictish barbarians. Her blood curling tales of endless tortures these temple maidens have to bear and the bold Poitainian knights who’d rescue –or at least avenge them, is one of great wisdom and heroism. Emilia claps her hands and is certain that her priest will be as bold and heroic towards her too. Finally it is Radegund’s turn. She tells the other girls stories that her father told him when drinking stories of weird and wonderful lost cities and perilous monsters, of evil sorcerers and bloodthirsty generals. They all clap at her tales of King Conan the Usurper’s great deeds of bloodletting.

Around that time they all notice how there is a fire in the city. Girls go out to look at the burning. They ponder hard and come into conclusion that there must be some kind of a torch march in the city. Radegund is completely baffled on hearing that -as a Princess she always gets invited to all parties in the castle. Why not to this one? Livia comforts Radegund that if she didn’t got an invitation then it probably wasn’t a party where she or her mother would go. Radegund smiles to wisdom of Livia. They must some kind of party of the wretched held in slums. They try to listen carefully and can hear some kind of animal like screams too. Yes, they must be those sewer rats as Julia points out. Smelly sewer rats, Emilia adds. Radegund giggles and feels a lot better now. They are so happy together here…

Then they all go to sleep.

So Ladies in Waiting finished off their perilous adventure. Many more adventures would be ahead of them. These stories would also be told to young maidens of Aquilonia so that they would learn to become good and decent wives…

Session 14: Where our heroines go to rob rich merchants …

The morning starts for our brave warriors with an observation of smoke trails in the city, just like when they returned back from those demon worshippers. That means they must go to kill some Stygian next! They are evil!

Since they have not seen any Stygian here in the giant forest they have to settle for killing snakes that are breeding even more Stygian snake worshippers. Julia thinks it is a grand idea –she’s been searching for fresh poisons for quite long time.

The first order of things is to find some poisonous snake and Emilia is more than ready to show how snakes are hunted. Three other girls think it is a great idea that Emilia goes first. Ultimately they see a huge black snake with razor like gray lines on its back. Emilia goes to pick up a Y-shaped stick used to catch snakes and shows to three trembling sisters in arms that it is no trouble to run after the snake although it is a bit hard to see it before stepping on one when running after it in the tall grass. Livia and Radegund hug each other while Julia licks her lips as Emilia screams and giggles and finally rises the huge snake up from its neck for everyone to see. Then she makes it open its poisonous fangs and plays with it holding it and pushing it at Julia –just for fun! Julia opens her vial with shaking hands and demonstrates how the poison is extracted from poisonous snakes –that is something her mother showed her. Emilia drops the snake to their feet and proceeds to beat it up with her stick for good. She grasps it from its tail and starts to drag it with them while other girls keep a good distance between them and Emilia.

After defeating evil Stygian sorcerers it is obvious that they have to return back home. However, after carefully remembering that they did turn left at one big stone they immediately turn left again at that stone to return back. Most unfortunately they see nothing of their tent. Livia suggests that evil bad bunnies have stolen the tent. Julia is ready to believe it on that instant. To make things even worse they see a giant ocean before them.

Then again, Radegund is a Pirate Princess and as such orders her faithful crew to dress up as pirates and then cross the ocean with their ship. Emilia again shows how to make a raft but she has to make second one too as none of the girls is going to be crossing over with a dead snake aboard. Emilia’s pleas go to dead ears as Julia and Livia hide behind Pirate Princess who insists on having a real pirate fleet under her command.

The ocean crossing is just as difficult as it is in reality. They get shipwrecked and only Emilia’s excellent swimming skills keep the other girls from drowning –and all this while keeping the snake in her hand too! When they all finally reach the beach front of small pond they are all coughing water and shivering. Radegund then comes into conclusion that being Pirate Princess isn’t all what it is cracked out to be. However, what is important is that they walk forwards and turn left once or twice or thrice and they are back in their castle! The evil bad bunnies must have returned it because they are that afraid of Barbarian Princess Radegund!

Thus they will now get dressed as naked barbarians –or more properly undressed. Emilia never thought there is anything bad in running around without clothes –even when here are no smelly castle moats. Julia knows what her future life and work entails so painting herself blue and jumping up and down is part of the business. Then again, Livia has always been a shy girl and she does not like being watched or touched and much less hugged and definitely does not like idea dressing up in anything more revealing that temple maiden’s robes. She will never get naked in daylight! Then again, what she likes or not is no concern of Barbarian Princess Radegund. Emilia and Radegund get to the work and few minutes later Livia is like when she came to this world like other girls. Weeping and sobbing Livia is no fun but Barbarian Princesses have bigger things in their mind, such as finding rich merchants to rob and kill! With Radegund at head they decide to head for nearest market to loot it clean. However, before that they crucify the Stygian snake at the tree right next to squirrel.

The fierce barbarian sisterhood of the sword stops at the nearest apple tree because they are hungry and haven’t eaten apples for a long time. Once again Emilia shows her worth by climbing to tree to pick up as many apples as high as she can while other take their loot from the ground. It is not exactly burning a village but close enough for them. With the apple tree thoroughly emptied it is obvious why naked barbarians are always raiding. You just cannot take many apples with you if you’re running naked! Thus they settle to eat as many apples as they can right there and then bring the loot with them to castle later. Furthermore, Emilia makes sure the loot they actually bring back is fairly small.

Following enjoyment of their loot it is time to go riding back in the wild eastern steppes of Hyrkania. Thus Radegund Princess of the Nomads of Eastern Steppes will go to ride. Unfortunately they have no good horses -and Livia is too weak to be a good horse. Thus they are walking nomad cavalry. First it means putting on the clothes of eastern barbarian nomads.

Julia takes the lead here. She knows quite well what kind of clothes those eastern nomads wear –as a matter of fact she also knows the kind of dances they do in desert thanks to extensive education by her mother. End result is something fairly close to eastern garbs and Radegund cannot wait to try them on. Emilia also likes the light clothes. Livia is happy to have at least some clothes to wear. She is also quite touched by the fact that Julia more than freely wears the most daring dress of them all. Such a good heart she has despite the evil rumors circulated about her mother. Suitably dressed it is time to go raiding their mortal enemies –the evil bad bunnies who stole their castle before. Radegund’s plan is simple: Ride till we find them - then we kill them all!

This time Emilia’s skills in killing all things furry are put to ultimate test. They start by closing the rabbit holes and then start to dig to find the monster inside. Bad bunnies must be killed in their lairs! Four nomad heroine raiders ruthlessly dig deeper and finally manage to dig out a bad bunny out of its ears. Its fate is sealed when raiders return back to their primeval roots where stones are the very first weapons. All four keep on hitting the monster until all that is left is some blood and guts on dirty white fur. The blood curling screams they raise tell all the cruel fate of those left in the tender mercies of barbarians of Hyrkanian steppes!

With the ruthless raid against evil bad bunnies finished it time to return back to their camp. They crucify their slain enemy to the same tree as their earlier trophies. This time they hack it from its ears. If there is something the good civilized people of Aquilonia know is that the more gruesome is the death the better it makes their enemies squirm in fear and thus make them avoid attacking Aquilonia. Radegund also knows that it is entirely different thing compared to cruel trophies and bloodletting their barbarian neighbors do on daily basis.

The night starts with four girls resting on their backs, all tired from the eating and days worth of adventuring, and looking at the endless array of stars above them. They start the endless and ultimately impossible task done by so many people before them, calculating the number of starts Mitra has created in His great wisdom. Emilia has trouble beyond one hand, Julia and Radegund can reach up to both hands and also fingers of their toes too but Livia can count like there is no end. To other three girls the shy maiden looks like an accountant for her ability to count more and more numbers that go well beyond their comprehension but ultimately even she cannot go further. The Mitra is so mighty. He has made so many stars no man can count them. They can truly see it now.

Then the talk turns into a serious business of marriage.

For Emilia the thing is easy. Dexitheus gave her a cute and proper priest as a husband so all it requires is convincing him to marry her -with fists if necessary. Emilia declares to world her eternal true love to that priest boy –one whose name she has completely forgotten.

Julia says she really wants to marry a good rich husband. All girls nod at her clear headed thought. She has obviously thought her future well. She doesn’t say that he must be old or sickly and die soon leaving her a rich widow with considerable inheritance. Hopefully she can do it without murdering him too so there would be no risk of getting caught.

Livia is all red and she keeps staring her feet. With Radegund’s prodding she tells that she knows she should get herself a husband but she would really want to return back to her temple to attend her dear bees and study more of Wisdom of Mitra. She sobs and wipes out tears on her cheeks remembering how simple things were under iron discipline of truly virtuous maidens. She blushes even redder as she knows she just lied to her best friends. The fair headed knight who held her in his arms in the battle against evil demon worshippers had made her heart beat like no one before but how she can say it? How? How? Can he truly be her true love? But she is a temple maiden –daughter of Mitra! Oh why it is so difficult?

Finally Radegund cannot understand what the big ruckus about this entire marriage thing is. After all, she has been married, well engaged, ever since she was a toddler. Other girls gasp at this fact. Radegund explains that she’s never seen her husband but he’ll be there so she cannot understand her friends’ parents were so thoughtless they didn’t marry their off daughters when they were toddlers too. But no worries! Radegund is a princess and as such she can order her ladies in waiting up to and including who they can marry! They all cheer at this fact although Radegund does not bother to mention a little thing that her mother holds the word over her word. After all, surely mother agrees to what she says!

Then they all go to sleep.

When the morning starts it is time to get back home –they have no more honey or sugar left. Thus they left everything behind and travel back in their own clothes to castle. Unfortunately the small sally port they used to leave castle is closed and locked and despite their screams no one seems to open it. Thus they walk back to main gate and walk in regal pose past astounded guards back to main fortress. As they argue should they go back to Radegund’s room before her mother notices they are missing or should they go to kitchen to eat first they see Queen Zenobia running to see them in most unladylike haste.

Radegund cannot fathom why her mother weeps now and then she wants to hug her and then to keep her sleeping with her in queen’s chamber next night. She is no girl anymore but actually a proper young lady already! But mothers are like that and won’t take no for an answer…

So Ladies in Waiting finished off their perilous adventure. Many more adventures would be ahead of them. These stories would also be told to young maidens of Aquilonia so that they would learn to become good and decent wives…

Session 15: Where our heroines meet handsome and rich Prince Taurus who is so pretty and accompany Princess Radegund to a tournament of children…

All good people of Tarantia sigh of relief and sometimes disappointment when King Conan the Usurper’s Atlantean blade cuts down his enemy after a grueling duel. The Dark Champion’s body is hacked to little pieces burned by Priests of Mitra and then hacked into little pieces. The small pieces are then mashed into dirt and ultimately Dexitheus curses the very land in the slum where remains are left. Such is fate of those who dare to oppose King of Aquilonia. Following the endless partying the matters of Kingdom return to their normal orderly ways. This is particularly true in Tarantia inside Usurper’s castle. The normal ritual is maintained.

One of those normal rituals is unleashing that little rascal Radegund and her friends whenever her studies are over although it usually happens when not so attentive Princess becomes impossible to her tutors to control. This time they have particularly good reason to run across the castle grounds to Radegund’s room. Prince Taurus, Radegund’s little brother, has arrived to castle.

Prince Taurus is second son of King Conan the Usurper. With his first son Conan already swift with sword and eager to fight evil enemies of the Aquilonia the eyes have turned to two remaining children. Princess Radegund is a girl and thus not seriously thought to be anything more than a daughter to be married off for an alliance. Prince Taurus is second son and if Conan dies in battle, would surely inherit the kingdom. However, Taurus was born under the most unlucky stars. He is evening star of the family and was born under difficult labor for Queen Zenobia. He has also proven to be nothing like strong and bold Conan or wild and active Radegund. Prince Taurus is a bookish and retiring boy who is more at home with tutors.

Some believe that Usurper has beaten up his wife countless time to punish her for siring such a limp wrested whelp. Some say she cannot bear any more sons for Usurpers angry fist having ruined her for coming up with Prince Taurus. Many are certain that Queen Zenobia, who, as the rumors in palace so well know, used to a woman of average modesty before becoming queen, has carried out adultery and Taurus is thus evil son who has been cursed by Mitra. Spawn of adulterous harlot queen he is surely the ruin of Aquilonia they whisper. Rumors say Dexitheus is weaving plots to unearth the secret father of Taurus but so far drawn nothing but vague rumors.

Taurus’ thirst for knowledge is endless and knows no boundaries going to things no good worshipper of Mitra should ever go. At the same time Taurus is a sickly child who spends most of his time in a secluded manor resting and recovering. His return is a sure sign that Taurus is becoming a proper man and ready to take his place in Court.

As soon as girls enter the Radegund’s room for playing they see there a Nemedian nobleman of exceptional dash and beauty. His dark hair is long, his looks perfect, his eyes mysterious. They all go stunned for a moment. Radegund is first to act. She jumps to neck of Taurus kissing her brother. All thoughts of her friends -ladies in waiting or whatever- are gone in a second for her brother is here. Conan is stupid and always playing soldier but Taurus is now healthy and back in the castle. They immediately forget everyone else in the room and go through hundred adventures they have gone through when they have been separated.

Julia is first to come to her senses. Taurus –who is so pretty- has taken Radegund from them! This Prince Taurus is danger her –but he is so pretty. Emilia and Livia look Taurus too, listening to his pleasant voice and forgetting just about everything. He is so pretty.

After a good time, hours later, Taurus finally gets bored. He finally notices the three ogling girls and asks Radegund to present them properly. As all three ladies in waiting explain their long and illustrious family lines and curtsey as deep as they possibly can, Taurus makes a selection. Livia -or Sister Agrippina as she virtuously presents herself in the most demure manner of all the ladies- is a perfect toy!

Taurus jumps to the back of the still curtseying Livia and grabbing her piglets screams that now he’ll ride her as his ride! Radegund laughs herself sick as Livia collapses to floor under weight of Taurus screaming in shame. Prince had heard upon arriving to castle that Livia likes to ridden a lot and especially long and hard. No matter how much Taurus kicks and beats the wretched Livia the willowy girl just cannot seem to be able to move in all fours like a proper horse should. Taurus is –despite all his books- not as knowledgeable on actual subject of riding as older girls of court are. Then again, neither is Livia.

But no problem to Taurus! He jumps next to ride on strong and healthy Emilia while Radegund jumps on to occasion to ride on Julia. While Livia sobs on floor the future hopes of Aquilonia ride across Radegund’s room on backs of Julia and Emilia. It soon turns into a riding contest to the bitter end and Emilia easily bests Julia much to enjoyment of Prince Taurus. No matter how much Radegund pulls Julia’s hair and kicks and spits her to go faster she just cannot do it. Their raids finally collapse to floor and sisters giggle on bed eating honey and laughing how stupid their rides look. Emilia doesn’t think this so bad and she’d do it again as soon as she catches her breath. Livia is still curled in floor and sobbing for embarrassment of a man touching her so closely. Julia realizes that Prince Taurus, who is so pretty, is a dangerous enemy –although he is so pretty dangerous enemy.

Taurus finally leaves his sister his room to attend important matters of state –a term Conan’s predecessor often used. Julia seizes this opportunity to exact revenge to one who most deserves it. It also helps that Prince Taurus –who is so pretty- leaves the room allowing her to actually concentrate her mind. Prince Taurus is handsome and rich but most probably already betrothed like Radegund. Thus any attempt to be his ride leads to nowhere. Furthermore, he should be second step. First she needs her own money by killing –eh marrying- a suitably old and feeble knight. Then she should get Taurus as her lover and ultimately husband so in case of emergency she’d always have her own nest to draw money.

However, ultimately she needs to be on a good side of Radegund. Thus she must make sure Taurus and Radegund do not like each other. Breaking of a sisterly friendship should be order of the day. Emilia is too stupid and Livia too naïve to help her in this. Thus she approaches Radegund who is high on sugar and still giggling at her best friends and is so happy they can play together. Julia has an idea, last time they couldn’t take part in a tournament but what about they arrange their own tournament for young men?

Radegund thinks this is a grand idea. Emilia loves it too. She can take part of it as Radegund arranges it and thus orders everything. Livia thinks that anything that does not involve Prince Taurus and her as a horse is just grand, and she would love to be sitting as one of the high ranking ladies in audience. Radegund thinks it is a good idea and thus she’d want to have Taurus with them and won’t take no for an answer. Livia shudders at the idea.

Few well made questions later some of the children of the Black Dragons are called in. They are all like their fathers are –big and strong boys. They spend their days in castle either torturing animals and toddlers or riding girls to ground or stealing everything not nailed down and in immediate sight of their owners. In a word, perfect future soldiers of Black Dragons. Some twenty odd of those rascals are more than ready to participate –especially when Radegund promises them all a coin for taking part. Free of money for doing what they do every day. They all also bring up their gear that every self respecting son of a soldier carries, wooden weapons and whatever cast off armor they can scrounge.

Black Dragons will also loan Emilia an armor and weapon suitable for young boy. It is simply a matter of suitable bribe -and least trouble. The last time Emilia was getting into tournament was enough. If they loan her armor there will be simply less floggings and searching through the castle. With Pallantides in lead Emilia gets her gear right from the guard room. While it is a familiar place to Emilia from their last trip to steal armor none of the guards –with the exception of toothless old Ragnar- recognize her. It must be because she has her clothes on this time. Then again, Ragnar relies more on his keen sense of smell and Emilia does has her unique odor due her regular moat swimming sessions.

So the tournament participants are divided into two teams with the loser having to choose Emilia too. Meanwhile girls sit as audience with Radegund barking orders and slapping those slow enough not to understand immediately what they should do. Prince Taurus, who is so pretty, is also there. He is sitting in his finest silks like Radegund too. She has been taking hours to dress like a proper queen. Unfortunately her mother’s ladies in waiting were adamant that she will not get Queen Zenobia’s crown on loan. Old hags! They’ll be flogged as soon as she becomes a Queen! Thus she has to settle for her own tiara.

The tournament starts up with most feverish preparations. Servants and sons of soldiers build up some kind of review box for Radegund and Taurus and for others to sit in. Meanwhile the meanest boys of both teams get themselves fighting fit by drinking ale. So far no one dares to touch Emilia as she is chatting with her best friends. Prince Taurus appears in his best armor as a man of true knightly status should in a tournament. With the Taurus on audience it takes no time for fighters to start mocking Taurus with words that lose much their effect on Radegund as she does not fully understand all references of limpness. This is the crew that would -given opportunity- spend all their money on ale and whores and despise every man with a sword but no arm.

Jeering boys taunt Prince with every whisper in the wind, every veiled gossip in the shadows. Does Son of Usurper fear battle? Is he not worthy of being a chieftain? Is he a captain he claims to be? Is he no man? True knight? Does he hide behind girls in velvet pillows? Is he limp in other places too?

As mob jeering grows louder and louder and mocking songs echo the castle walls it is obvious that Taurus’ position is getting more and more untenable yes he does not budge but acts as if he’d not even heard the shouting in his front. Julia cannot but admire Taurus, who is so pretty. Meanwhile Emilia is jumping up and down in the field on how happy she is to take part of the tournament, even if it is a mock tournament.

Julia cannot but smile. She notices just how furious Prince Taurus, who is so pretty, is becoming. Julia’s real problem is just how she can talk Taurus to enter the battlefield. Surely he can be prodded there but how? She cannot ask it directly as Taurus’ vengeance would fall on her. Radegund is way too happy to have Taurus sitting next to her to ask it. It is as if her mind, if it ever was there, has been removed. Surely she must learn to listen to mob as she is their ruler – at least occasionally?

With the mob fully incensed it is obvious that something must give. Livia whose eye on all things court politics is purely theoretical and view of the world naïve to boot, breaks the knot. She asks Radegund if Taurus would fight to show his knightly manhood to all who suspect his hands? Radegund is not certain but on hearing the jeers of the mob she starts to giggle and agrees that it is the most excellent plan. Taurus refuses quietly and politely to his sister but Radegund is not to be stopped. She rises to stand in her chair and screams on top of her lungs that her brother is more than ready to show his strong sword hand in the field of honor. Even more, his brother will save to defend her. With all eyes on Taurus, it is obvious he cannot sit in pillows anymore. Arena is his.

The boys look at Prince Taurus, only man in the field with steel weapons and full armor, like a pack of hungry wolves. Taurus’ eyes are fixed on his death as boys get ready to close in and stampede him down. His only hope is that they’ll attack Emilia first but there is no such luck. These wolves only respect force and Taurus is a rare game indeed. Meanwhile Julia sits back in her chair sipping wine enjoying the show. Oh he is so pretty, pretty indeed!

The fight is over in an instinct as everyone on both sides charges Taurus. Very soon he lies flat on the castle dirt. As he is being beaten to pulp one thing that he will always remember will be smiling Emilia who is also being beaten. Emilia is pointing at him with her finger and giggling and gloating. Meanwhile the rest of the boys and girls are singing scorn of the poor Prince and laughing themselves silly at his limp wrist and lack of proper knightly manhood. Taurus says nothing. He screams of pain and keeps his eyes fixed on Livia as she’s known. He will have her on his peck and call and she’ll die, slowly…

Radegund is the top of this all as she rises to stand in her chair to see things better. Soon she is screaming as hard as she can. She actually gets such a fit her tiara is almost falling. What a breach of etiquette! But no worries, Julia is there to help her best friend Princess Radegund. With lightning reflexes she, like all good Aquilonian ladies in waiting should, attaches more hair pins to raven black hair of her lady making tiara fit properly in place. Thus no matter how much Radegund rolls on her chair laughing and jeering her dear brother Taurus, who is very pretty, her tiara does not fall. That is something every proper lady of Aquilonia should always aspire towards!

And then Princess and her ladies in waiting, her once and future best friends, leave her stupid little brother behind and went to jump up and down in Radegund’s huge bed until night comes having the most glorious pillow war…

So Ladies in Waiting finished off their perilous adventure. Many more adventures would be ahead of them. These stories would also be told to young maidens of Aquilonia so that they would learn to become good and decent wives…

Nikita, it is a very interesting campaign! I also have players who love political intrigues and more social interaction. I might actually "borrow" some of your ideas for my next campaign. Thumbs up!

Hello Nikita,

Great campaign! We all have different ideas on campainging and Conan certainly creates additional 'challenges' that often are overlooked in traditional d20. By chance, do you have this available in a word doc or other summary? I would love a copy for my future campains. If so, feel free to PM me. Thanks.

Session 16: Where our heroines learn finer points of persuasion in their endless quest for serving Mitra…

With a new day shining to fair castle of King Usurper things could not be going better. Prince Taurus, who is so pretty, has retired for rest in his rooms. There is also a rumor that he will soon return back to countryside to recover his bad health. Princess Radegund is so sad that she tells about it everyone in the castle giggling what a weak woman her younger brother is. And a shame to his family too! Julia is beaming with pleasure, probably because sun is shining ponders Emilia.

As with the every day Radegund gets training and nurturing for finer points in life. She learns about history of great families of Aquilonia and of foreign kingdoms. She studies politics and court intrigue in terms of listening tales of great treachery made by great queens. She also studies religion of Mitra to become a proper lady in this devout Aquilonia and also to recognize evil cults that lurk in every shadow. Then there are evil Stygians that should be annihilated. With this new day they learn have learned more about evil cults that dare to disturb all fine ladies who worship Mitra. Radegund feels a devout religious wrath in her today as she hears multitude of proper punishments that those who dare to raise their hand against Mitra should be meted against.

Radegund has learned that during her adventure outside a castle several wretched pirates were captured. She is even more astounded to hear that unlike those cultists that were hanged and left to rot on castle walls like a game, they have not been properly punished. Surely they must do something about it! Indeed, if she hadn’t been outside in her adventure, they might have succeeded in capturing her! Perhaps even tried to hurt her mother and father! Her blood boils. Livia is immediately with Radegund on this matter of utmost devotion. They must get to the bottom of this wicked plot -immediately.

Subsequently all four ladies travel at most haste to deepest of the dungeons to study the state of the art on all things persuasion. Radegund explains that her mother is very unfair as she does not allow her to watch all the public executions or accompany her to torture chambers when they interrogate the wicked. Everyone agrees that it is so unfair! With education as well as wrath in their mind Princess and her ladies in waiting arrive to deepest and darkest dungeon of the lands of Aquilonia –dreaded Steel Chambers.

The torturers, all drunk and clad in human skin, sit in darkest corner shaving each other’s hair off. They look at four girls with keen interest but knowing Radegund’s position they know they must bow and heel to this little wildcat –for now. They are all big men, difficult to kill and experts in their trade. They are most surprised at Radegund’s plans but few gold coins and knowledge that they would be whipped quickly turns their minds. They immediately surrender their facilities with glint of gold in their eyes. Radegund wants to see the foreign pirates captured some time ago. Torturers happily agree and provide her a tour amongst the wretched. Four girls dressed in finest silk and linen take a walk through the torture chambers and select two most evil looking characters amongst the captured. Their skin is as black as a coal and their teeth white as ivory –surely wicked cannibals from Southern jungles in service of Stygians!

Radegund cannot figure it out why her mother has not given her tour here. Every fine lady of Aquilonia must be well trained to arts of torture and motherhood because nurturing their children requires those skills –at least her mother has often buried her head on her hands and said this is all sheer torture! Thus Radegund insists on two fierce torturers to explain her how people are tortured –in practice?

With glint of gold in their eyes the two men start by teaching girls how to make knots. See, they often have to hog tie their victims on field where proper shackles are simply not available. Ladies nod dutifully. They look carefully how experts tie their two naked victims as painfully as possible -preferably strangling them slowly. Then they show with more ropes how various knots really work. Now you! It is obvious that Emilia has the keenest interest but somehow everything more complex than hangman’s noose escapes her. Livia’s long fingers produce the finest knots –perfect craftsmanship. Even more, there is some foam in her small mouth as she explains what should be done to the wicked.

However, philosophical part is just as important. Torturer’s life is not just racks and wheels or fiery pokes and lashes. Between screams of their victims they confess to ladies that they have daughters of that age home too. They talk proudly how they train hard with rats and kittens their family trade. You should see their busy little hands at work! Radegund nods with her heart filled with pride of how her subjects have learned their trade of hard work under watchful eyes of Mitra.

But there are also harsh realities and difficult times for poor torturers. It is a pity they do not have sons as it is so hard to get daughters into this trade as journeymen. Many castle lords think that women are simply not as good torturers as men. Admittedly women are simply not as strong as men but their busy little hands can wield the instruments just as quickly as men. It is all about techniques and trade that defines true masters of torture –and they have decades of experience and generations of traditions to uphold! Many daughters say it is hard to find good husbands when they work with unwilling flesh all the time. But their daughters are really good girls who serve Mitra! Torturers are people too! They are so misunderstood!

Then it is time to demonstrate hot iron pikes. As the screams of strange foreign languages continue it comes obvious that the wicked do not even speak properly Aquilonian. That is no concern to girls. They also get to handle with pikes, by testing them on apples. Emilia giggles at the sight of burned apples –it must be just like roasted Cimmerians her father told her one night.

After some time of handling carefully their pikes and getting the hang of their trade it is time to test them out to their victims –who are evil guilty villains. They start their work by branding their enemies for easier reference. This is vital part of the business as to know whom one is referring as in need of further strangling or drowning. The traditional method is to drown the tied up villain by thrusting his head to barrel –a job Julia refuses to do so her nails are in no danger. Torturers do the hard work it is just using the iron on bottom that falls to girls. They all do it and victim cannot even scream as his head is kept under the water. This allows constant torturing even in nights when lords and ladies of castle are sleeping. Emilia immediately memorizes this important fact to her mind.

With the guilty villains branded it is time to start the serious business –fair and just trial. Torturers stress that it is vital that torture is tied to interrogation or trial as torture for its own sake is something professionals only do when they are bored. Livia immediately takes her place as a clerk and Julia looks fascinated what happens when iron touches hot human flesh –the screams just make her happy. Meanwhile Radegund is watching all this as happy as any young noble lady who has eaten her belly up with apples, honey and sugar can be. Julia is with her as she claps her perfectly manicured hands together as her best friends and torturers get to the poking iron part of their jobs.

After some time they all do manage to get some kind of mongrel talk out of their two coal black villains. Livia is certain that they confess some kind of evil conspiracy and as such she quickly writes what kind of confessions they would surely say if they would talk some kind of human language instead of barbarian grunting. Radegund helps her by dictating some choice quotes like …wicked. Radegund stays firmly in command and she shows her eagerness to new experiences by flexibly using iron and reading confessions and suggesting torturers to keep those evil villains longer under water.

However, ultimately Livia finishes off the confessions and two guilty villains do not appear capable of underwriting their confessions. Not to be worried! Radegund helps them to scribble X-shaped lines that are as good as names. Besides they could not even state their names anyways –probably due Stygian magic? With confessions signed the trial is truly over. Radegund is more than proud that she has been a fair and just high judge who has overseen justice to evildoers. Livia is also happy that she has done one of her most important duties -collection of the confessions of the wicked. She smiles to herself. Now she is a true temple maiden of Mitra!

After spending suitable tome to enjoy their remarkable achievements all four know they just have to act upon it. With Radegund at head all four head immediately for Temple of Mitra. Once there Radegund is first to present their documents to Dexitheus who appears to be somewhat surprised at Radegund’s evidence. That just shows just how deep the network of lies and treachery went underneath the palace! He promises to act upon it on Radegund’s continuous insistence and sends routine execution orders back to Steel Chamber. Radegund cannot hold her triumph and acts immediately on Dexitheus’ wise suggestion she should go to enjoy her achievements in her room with her friends –preferably for a long time.

Emilia has her own plans as well. First she intends to give her true love some gifts. The burned out apples look cute but she is certain he’d love to have a hangman’s noose around his neck. Thus she runs to priest’s chamber but unfortunately does not see him. Since Radegund insists that they will all go to play in her room as Dexitheus said as their spiritual duty Emilia has no choice but to leave her gift to him. She hastily nails the noose on his door so he can see it immediately when he returns from his daily chores. How happy will he be when he returns back to his chamber!

So Ladies in Waiting finished off their perilous adventure. Many more adventures would be ahead of them. These stories would also be told to young maidens of Aquilonia so that they would learn to become good and decent wives…

Session 17: Where our heroines travel to distant land of Argos…

Diplomacy is one of many duties that Queen Zenobia attends to serve her husband in peace and war. With the borders of Aquilonia again safe and sound King Conan has gone to inspect defenses on borders and see how his new crop of generals is doing. This also allows him to avoid duty of annual visit to Argos, which is one of the more friendly neighboring states to Aquilonia.

The news of Queen Zenobia’s trip is taken with great joy. First and certainly never least in the minds of the ladies of the court is the fact that Messantia’s many market places are biggest in Hyboria. Not even Tarantia can boast such a dazzling array of spices, silks, jewelry and slaves. Trip to Argos is a luxury and those who make it can show to rest of the court their privileged position and wealth. All important ingredients to make wheels of political marriages move forwards. Julia is especially interested in these vital issues –this is the trip that makes her the jewel of the court or turns her fortunes to nothingness.

The Khorotas River that flows all the way from eastern mountains through Tarantia to Messantia is perfect for purpose of travel. Queen is also more difficult to ambush in river compared to Road of Kings. This eases minds of Pallantides and Dexitheus to no end. Queen also insists of taking her children and their retinues with her on trip which makes Dexitheus more than happy.

Queen Zenobia’s journey and subsequently life in her boat is as well arranged as everything she does. Since the climate of Argos is hotter and a bit drier until they reach the harbour city of Messantia it is obvious that living inside the hot and damp ship is out of the question. Queen has thus settled for a tent built up on top the ship allowing her and her court to sit comfortably and enjoy the travel. Meanwhile a strong retinue of knights patrols the ship’s decks to ensure everything goes peacefully.

Court is no court unless there is order and it is nowhere as clearly shown as in daily ritual of makeup. No one touches Queen’s hair but her own ladies in waiting. She also wishes that her own children are done by her ladies in waiting whose skills in all things are vastly superior to rather young lords and ladies her children have in their own retinue. Naturally Queen’s own ladies in waiting need assistance too and that is done by her children’s ladies in waiting. That is also excellent tutorial for them to learn secrets of make up, selection of jewelry and clothes and other vitally important things in ladies in court and marriage must know to their heart. Similarly the servants must aid ladies in waiting in their make up.

The make up takes many hours for hair alone and it is the best opportunity for ladies to handle their most important occupation; diplomacy or gossiping for what is going on. Julia is expert in this and she fluently ohhs and ahhs the superb jewels Queen Zenobia’s ladies in waiting can afford as their own purchases -or as gifts from their mistress or certainly many lovers. Once she gets rich she’ll have as much –no, more- jewels than her competition. Livia is genuinely astounded at beautiful things she sees. Her praise to ladies is clumsier than Julia’s but there is real honesty in her words. However, unwittingly she comes across as somewhat rustic –more like a simple peasant girl from Bossonian Marches than proud lady of Poitainia her true breeding is. Talking of rustic behaviour Emilia fills the description far better. For one she is far more interested in young priest than her vitally important tutorial to make up. As a matter of fact she spent most of her free time trying to fish on vessel like a peasant too. That boy priest in her side is decent, what he sees in her? Her family’s money perhaps?

In the evening there will be a feast with rigidly ordered table plan as it should be. This is all part of education of Queen Zenobia’s children. After all, she can hardly send her daughter away in marriage if all she can do is being a pest. It is also excellent rehearsal for business in Argos where honour and glory and wealth are everything. Thus Queen Zenobia arrives to dinner from her whole afternoon long make up with her high heeled sandals clicking in perfect harmony. Julia looks her astounded. She does not walk but she glides the planks of the ship and finally turns around and sits in the comfortable silk pillows with only a glimpse of her ankles showing in her towering heels. Julia is completely convinced she has never seen anything as elegant or tempting as this. From now on she’ll take all her tips in everything from walking to fashion from this living goddess.

Similarly Princess Radegund is taking all her actions from her mother. She sits just as rigid as she does and once Queen has stopped her discussion she fluently continues talking same things with same opinions. As soon as Radegund gets tired Prince Taurus continues the same polite and ultimately empty small talk to her mother who appreciates the effort but firmly fixes the errors in accent and misunderstandings in difficult words. Emilia is also as quiet as ever as Radegund told her that last girl who annoyed Zenobia in a dinner was whipped to death. Livia is as serious as ever although he notices the dashing figure of fair headed knight in deck, away from ladies yet close enough to watch should anything alarming to happen.

Livia has been listening to Julia too much lately and thinks that she must make a good impression to fair headed knight. Perhaps even talk to him? But the blond lady has been all too familiar with him. Perhaps she should change dress as Julia seems to do whenever her mood changes? But there is a big problem. When her brother dragged her from safety of her temple all she had was an old dress that she wore when she was a child and came to temple. It is way too small to her now -showing her ankles and even more! So all she can wear now are temple’s robes and she wears her best now.

Then Livia gets a bright idea. She’ll loan one of Julia’s gowns! Then again, they are all so revealing –showing ankles and busts and all. But there is something she can wear -high heeled sandals are absolutely must as Julia told her one day. Surely Julia won’t mind if she loans one of hers –the higher heels the better! After a short but intensive training session she can walk like a drunkard across the room and that is beginning of her life as fashionable lady of great beauty. Up to deck she goes.

Just about everyone on deck is politely smiling at Livia who walks so wobbly that she was either just been spanked or have drunk a whole bottle of wine. However, after agonizingly long time Livia manages to finally walk to Zenobia’s tent while holding for support with both hands. Livia is just beaming how beautiful and graceful she must be! Certainly the knight saw that too!

Once in the tent and forced to walk without support Livia naturally falls over her long hems and falls flat in the pillows. Everyone bursts to laugh with Radegund giggling and hiding her smile behind her hand –like her mother does. However, Julia is not laughing. She just saw that Livia is using her sandals –her best sandals! Used by someone else! Now ruined! Forever! And she never used them –not even once!

Julia sees red! She hurled herself right at the embarrassed Livia and starts to tear off her clothes to see if she wears something else stolen from her. This creates riotous laugher from Prince Taurus and Livia is screaming. Being on losing end of their fights is nothing new to her but definitely not in front of Queen. However, Julia is on rightful quest of holy vengeance and is not to be stopped. She is on a foul mood and simply tears off Livia’s robe once and for all and rescuing her holy object –decent pair of sandals.

Half dazed Livia does not fully comprehend what is going on but she is now naked and very vulnerable and everyone is laughing at her. To make things even worse Prince Taurus seizes the moment. He thinks that shoe thief should be punished –perhaps a night or two without food and water would sober her head? Queen Zenobia sees nothing and thus Radegund nods and orders Livia to be punished. As she is dragged to under the deck by one of the knights she trembles in shame and embarrassment. Fair headed knight does not even look at her. What a disaster! Meanwhile he ponders on his own if Livia has started to drink all day as she can hardly stand in her two feet. What a strumpet!

At night fall Julia is sits saddened in her bunk. Moments ago she had buried her high heels to river. They were beyond rescue; they were soiled by that bitch Livia. I hope she burns in hell praying that Mitra of hers. Does nothing else ever go in her head? I need new shoes and Livia is going to pay for them –one way or another. Her dark thoughts are interrupted by someone coming to her room –It is Prince Taurus who is so pretty. All thoughts of Livia fly from Julia’s mind and she looks into dark eyes of handsome and beautiful Prince. Her mind belongs to him.

Taurus has a plan and his words flow like honey dripping from his lips to eager ear or Julia. Apparently she has made an impression to him –and he likes what he sees. Julia blushes of idea of attention of Prince Taurus –who is so pretty. He puts a small pouch of gold coins to table –a teaser of better things to come. All that Julia has to do is to join him. Nothing dangerous, he is just so worried about his dear sister Radegund who is so thoughtless. If only Julia could tell him what she does so he can keep better eye on her?
Julia doesn’t listen to a word Prince Taurus –who is so pretty- says but she nods with the most sensual looks she can give. It is the very first she is putting her upbringing for a good use –and she intends to win. His dark eyes are so gentle –and so filled with sweet little lies. Julia cannot move her eyes from his. Their pact is speechless and obvious –a pact between two vipers- and Julia just smiles and nods. He is so pretty.

To seal their deal Prince Taurus shows he is a man of action. Taking oh so gently her hand in his he leads her to bed. She does her best to pretend not to know what is going on and Taurus, who is so pretty, is not to be stopped. He kisses and hugs her. Afterwards he grins wolfishly telling her riding was exquisite pleasure. She is now his mistress as well as conspirator. Julia blushes innocently in bed shearing tears of love and shame and smiles shyly for his Prince’s overwhelming show of manhood. Then again, she now knows that Prince Taurus does not really understand what riding is –and she sees no reason to teach him lessons of sensual arts yet –they must be left for a better time when she needs a lever from him. Besides, the anticipation is half the dish. He is so pretty!

Livia is still sobbing in a small and stinking room that serves as her dungeon. Not that Livia has been left without help. Emilia gave her a fish to eat. It was one of the fishes she had captured earlier –although given it to ship’s cat. Thankfully cat had not liked it so she could give it to Livia who thanks Emilia for her mercy although sometimes later she can no longer stand in her feet as stomach pain just grows and grows. Just when Livia things could not go worse she receives a new visitor -Prince Taurus.

Taurus is in a good mood. He just made Julia as her mistress as well as a spy but the true apogee of this night will be Livia. His squires –all thugs really- get to the work and in an instinct naked Livia is on floor. Then come fists and feet -Taurus is in no hurry. He does not soil himself in this rough stuff –it might hurt his looks- but he does like how it all ends as his squires do the sweaty work.

With Livia broken down it is time to enjoy her. The naked girl sobs and agrees to anything he makes her say. After some more persuasion she even denies her family background as longest and proudest of Poitainia and says she is bastard daughter of Attalusian whore and Pict barbarian. She even confesses she is a whore –and a cheap one too- offering services to every peasant and slave. Thus Taurus thinks that she is not a noble woman, not even a peasant whore but a slave and no longer worth the title she has claimed to have. Finally bruised and shamed Livia admits even that. She is now a slave in service of Taurus. Idea pleases him.

However, this is not what he came here with his squires. Livia is of no use to him. Thus he says she is his slave but can pretend to be noblewoman as he pardons her for her evil crimes. Livia smiles through her tears to good Prince Taurus has pardoned her and given back her titles. He says everything will be fine and she should be loyal and obedient and tell him everything. Livia sobs and trembles and looks her good Prince for salvation as if he was Mitra himself. He has forgiven her!

Taurus grasps Livia’s long hair and bends her head upwards exposing her long thin neck and brings his dagger to her throat. How many years it was when he killed his first kitten? Strangled it in manor yards then moving to bigger and better things -a dog, then fox. In one night journeying around manor grounds he saw a slave girl who was insolent. It was so easy! Last time was a tavern wench –or where they more? He cannot really remember –or care. He likes her insolent slave girls like this -sobbing and weeping like pigs to the slaughter. He’d seen pigs slaughtered and it was fun. Squeaking and dying and he got to do it too. Pigs like this Livia. They are at their most beautiful when their necks are open –inviting him to do his thing with them. Finally he’d do the same thing to Radegund…

Enough! Taurus turns to look who dares to oppose him. It is a fair headed knight of Black Dragons, Queen Zenobia’s favourite swordsman and her bodyguard from Poitainia –a man not to be trifled without a strong sword arm.

Knight is in his nightshirt rather than armour –it is after all a night and whole ship has retired for rest- but his authority has no equal here. Prince Taurus and his henchmen disappear –scurrying to their rooms like scared rabbits they have become. Livia jumps to knight’s arms. She shudders and hugs him with both hands as if her life depends on it. His knight riding to the rescue as he always does. She looks at his pale blue eyes, so deep, yet so gentle. She can feel through his flimsy nightshirt his strong muscles –his arms are like tree trunks yet hold her as gently as if she was a flower. Livia bursts to yet another round of gentle silent tears and looks at him for safety and comfort.

She is not carried –she flies to her room in a matter of moments that feel to her as if it was eternity. She knows she should ask him to leave her at door –no proper lady would let man enter her room until marriage- but all she can do now is hug him harder. He escorts her to her bed and gently allows her to rest there. She looks at his long fair hair, too fair for a Poitainian yet not blond like northern barbarians have. He sits on bed for a moment and Livia instinctively curls herself up. Yet all he does is move her long hair from her face and smile. When he finally leaves he stops for a moment at door and turns to watch the fair temple maiden of Poitainia once more and she tries to say the words but her throat is suddenly sore and she closes her eyes tightly shut and turns her head away blushing.

As Livia sleeps tightly curled in her bed seeing dreams of fairy tale princes he cannot sleep in his room alone. He can only think the willowy maiden Livia. He knows she is no good but there are no lies or treachery in her eyes whenever he tries to seek truth to that enigma...

So Ladies in Waiting finished off their perilous adventure. Many more adventures would be ahead of them. These stories would also be told to young maidens of Aquilonia so that they would learn to become good and decent wives…

Session 18: Where our heroines attend dinner with Queen Zenobia and learn secrets of diplomacy…

Queen Zenobia wants to have one more dress rehearsal for her court so everything works fine in Argos. Thus she invites everyone in their best gowns to accompany her in a state dinner. The preparations are feverish with all the women trying to come at their best.

This forms a trouble to Livia who must get herself a new gown. Julia tore her best robe apart and she just cannot dress in her only gown. The only one she knows who can give her anything to wear is Julia. Thus she heads to her room to ask for help in dressing up. Julia cannot believe her ears. What? Has Livia become a woman? Then again, that bitch destroyed her best heels!

Livia goes to beg for aid from Julia. She knows she is furious for what happened so she goes to her knees to beg for some more. Julia isn’t that convinced so Livia goes to her belly to crawl some more. Convinced of Livia’s sincerity she steps on Livia’s fingers with her high heels to hear some more convincing. Livia is desperate and Julia knows it but that doesn’t stop her from savouring the moment, and giving Livia a stern lecture of high heeled sandals and making her repeat it all –and then repeat it again. Then she want’s something more. Oh! Julia doesn’t really want that much. She merely insists that Livia becomes her obedient slave –now and forever. Livia agrees with eyes red of tears. If there is something Livia knows it is being obedient. This is becoming more and more like her time in temple with daily punishments for any infraction real or imagined.

Julia in her great mercy gives Livia something to wear. It is so last year’s fashion in cut and colours but after a short discussion with Livia it becomes obvious that Livia refuses to dress up like a harlot. Julia is certain that Livia’s idea of how harlots dress quite different to what she knows of this subject. However, Julia picks up from her seemingly endless stock of gowns something she’d wear only in a funeral of Dexitheus. It is about as dark, serious and old fashioned as dresses can possibly go. Livia says it is something her mother wears regularly and thus she can wear it too. She also selects her lowest high heels that seem to be upper limit of what Livia can walk.

Queen Zenobia’s dinner starts like the dinners always do. Emilia is quiet as she still remembers the part about whipping to death. She sits next to her priest who is in his robe and carries out polite discussion of endless mercy of Mitra. Usually Livia or Sister Agrippina as she insists to be called in these moments would be endlessly talking of same subject and offering advice on how to live. However, this time she is all quiet. It is also the first time she has been seen wearing a gown. Object of curiosity might be one thing, but Livia is embarrassed at the gaudy ornaments and tight cut of her only gown. She just knows she looks like a harlot. That is why the knight is also looking at her so she is blushing and staring at her plate and hopes that the night ends up soon.

Julia is doing her best to praise Queen and her ladies in waiting while trying not to appear overtly sycophantic. Meanwhile fair headed knight –now in his best silk tunic and cape- seems to be object of affection of many ladies. Princess Radegund and Prince Taurus, who is so pretty, take their behaviour from their mother and seem as rigid and royal as ever. As always Queen takes soon the lead in discussion.

Queen Zenobia gladly educates her children to secrets of diplomacy. King Milos of Argos is a survivor -and a bit of a gambler too. In Conan’s hour of need he sided with Conan allowing him to reclaim his crown. Milos’ oldest son fought side by side with Conan in those dark days. Queen Zenobia’s trip to Messantia is thus one of diplomacy to reinforce their friendship. Then there is a question of succession. Milos has two sons –both at their prime and seeking hand in marriage. It is vital that she keeps her mind in their affairs to know what threats lurk in darkest corners of Milos court in future.

There are other things in her mind too. With friendly relations the traders of Messantia can move along the river all the way to Tarantia. This cuts down power of traders from Attalus who had before reaped all the profits. Those traders have a well earned reputation for being bewailed with money and promises –all ingredients to rebellion and civil war. With smaller money coffins they have to remain far more respectful to orders of King Conan.

Queen Zenobia has her own agenda too. She knows quite well that the wheel of time is merciless and her beauty and wit will eventually fade. However, she will live forever though her children. She knows the oldest son Conan will most probably die in endless feuds and wars. Conan is also as thoughtless and quick with his sword as his father. Thus it is vital that both of her remaining offspring learn the art of ruling as early as possible. Princess Radegund is to be married off but even so her motherly love to Radegund has made her teach her everything she knows of courtly games. If only she wasn’t so thoughtless! Prince Taurus is more of an enigma. He is a keen pupil and has proven to be as sharp as a sword in courtly intrigue but he is also weak and sickly. The worries of mothers never end…

When Queen thinks that it is too late for her it is time to turn the responsibility for party to her children. Princess Radegund will be hostess on her absence. She won’t need any help from her ladies in waiting either. It is just a test to see how well her children can do their work. With all eyes on Radegund she quickly turns discussion on weather –something everyone can agree. She sits as her mother did and talks important lecture of diplomacy –just like her mother did. Everyone listens to her intently and agrees to every single point she makes –even if her mother said it a bit differently. Such is the wisdom of Princess of Aquilonia. Priest and Emilia are also together and he is happy for Emilia is deathly quiet. He cannot fathom why she is so quiet but he enjoys every single moment.

However, with the warm and dry air and a little bit of wine the discussion eventually takes more –personal- touch. The blond lady wishes to discuss with fair headed knight in more private circumstances but he keeps himself back –so far. Livia blushes even redder on thought. She must do something! Her dress doesn’t seem to work! Perhaps he doesn’t like it?

Livia suddenly rises to stand and walks to deck. Then she screams and falls down to deck on her bottom and sit there trying to look her best as helpless maiden in distress of the tales she’d heard in court. Julia tries not to burst to laugh at Livia’s feeble trick but wonders who Livia is trying to make impression. Radegund? She doesn’t care anybody and forgets her promises immediately so begging for help is idiotic –although possible for Livia’s mind. Taurus? He is very good husband material for her family line but he is definitely married off like Radegund –and she never told them of her ambitions. Priest? It would be a natural pair as both pray all the time they can –and that means that their marriage would end up without children for sure. Knight? No, he would never care of a little crybaby –not with all the ladies in court fighting over his attention. It would be unnatural for him.

Livia waits and waits. She is getting more and more desperate by the moment as nothing is happening. Then she starts to weep but she keeps her head straight and only tears fall down. It is taking so long and she is getting so desperate. Why cannot he come to rescue her? Now Julia and every woman in court know that Livia is desperately trying to make an impression. However, none of them men does anything to help her. Of course! They are just men! They cannot be expected to actually understand anything!

On a corner or his eye the fair headed knight looks at the skinny girl in her gown sitting on middle of deck. What is it in that raven haired twig that attracts him? She has shown to be a harlot and now a drunken strumpet –hardly worth glancing at, much less marrying one. He ponders if he should go to see what the trouble is with her. However, blond lady knows her business quite well too. She leads his head to rest against her bosom which is a place ladies never allow men to probe -unintentionally. She smiles as he proves once again to be only a man. And what kind of a man! Handsome, rich, well bred knight, destined to raise high in Black Dragons –perhaps even their commander. Excellent husband material…

Livia cannot bear to watch this and she springs under deck to sit in the stairs. Surely he’ll come to rescue her as soon as the party is over. He is a good and handsome knight. He will come! He is so beautiful with his blue eyes and long fair hair. He will come, eventually and she will be here, waiting for him faithfully.

Evening turns eventually to a night and guests come under the deck to rest. Yet Livia sits by the stairs waiting for her knight faithfully. As fair headed knight finally comes to rest he has a company. Apparently blond lady has hurt herself or otherwise she is in his arms and whispering sweet nothings to his ear.

Livia does not let this faze her! She knows he will rescue him like he did yesterday evening! She will sit on floor with her legs open like when she fell on deck and wait for her knight to come to her rescue, and wait and wait, and dream of his strong arms. She waits until Julia who has waken up in the night and gone to drink some water finally says to sitting Livia that she looks like an idiot and should come to bed now, especially now since it is soon morning…

So Ladies in Waiting finished off their perilous adventure. Many more adventures would be ahead of them. These stories would also be told to young maidens of Aquilonia so that they would learn to become good and decent wives…

I'm impressed that you have managed to keep this balance between rivalry and companionship going so well. What's your secret?

During the game that emphasizes a social setting the characters create the adventure.

I think that the basic ingredient of role playing is that players must be encouraged to develop characters they themselves like to play. This is made easier if game master has a good idea what kind of characters and playing styles players would like to play. This is further encouraged with discussion of what kinds of things players would like their characters to experience in gaming sessions. For example Sanna likes to play characters that are quite impulsive and open while Anne enjoys clever court games and breaking the accepted social norms and finally Sari likes to play feminine and strong willed princesses.

Game master must encourage players to express their ideas and allow them to continue to their conclusion. However, if players do not seem to be able to develop anything or setting is strange then it is advisable for game master to have other characters to take the lead. In this game it means impulsive and childish Princess Radegund, murderously handsome Prince Taurus or cool and calculating yet also fiercely protective Queen Zenobia.

Essentially the difference between blood and thunder and thud and blunder is reading the dreams and wishes of players and strive to create adventures they like to play rather than mechanistically copy ideas from any given source material. Similarly it is advisable to use common stereotypes and allow storyline to take them to extreme lengths or turn completely around in order to play with known stereotypes to fresh approaches.

It is good to remember that a lot of intentional and unintentional humor rises from putting somewhat strangely behaving characters with ordinary common people. Last but not least the romantic tension is quite important part of social game and thus we have a number of marriages moving forwards at the pace of glacier despite best intentions.

Do you think your game would be different if it didn't have all female player group? I have no idea if games with all female players are different from others - I've only experienced all male and mixed gender groups. However, whenever I can, I try to get female players. For some reason, having girls/women in the group seems to improve the quality of the game, mainly by cutting down unnecessary bullshit. Guess it helps to break down "lets break bad jokes among the lads" -kind of atmosphere.

A Notification from Court Scribe of our Most Wise King Conan, Son of King Conan the Usurper

It has come to our knowledge that the tall tales of most indecent and shameless acts have been whispered out of noble ladies of good breeding of The Kingdom of Aquilonia.

Indeed, behavior of most of the good people described in this scroll has been so shameless and indecent that it is indeed hard to believe that they are truthful in their memoirs. This is particularly true in The Kingdom of Aquilonia, which enjoys the particular blessing of Mitra. This great Kingdom is indeed so well known that its noble men follow customs of lofty gentleman and noble women customs of obedient and virtuous wife.

This warning has been told to all to make them understand that such acts of indecency and shamelessness can only be carried out by women of average modesty. Under no circumstances should one, above of all, a reader of good stock, believe that a noble women of Aquilonia would ever do things that are described in this scroll and certainly never in the wise and pious reign of King Conan the Usurper. Subsequently, this story can only be a tale of most evil rumor mongering and as such the further writings in this scroll should be treated as nothing more than an evil Stygian lie.

We also hope that these tales would not be discussed amongst family and certainly never amongst men and women of good stock. Furthermore, should reader feel himself too weak in spirit or faint at heart, he should avert one’s eyes and close this scroll immediately…

Session 19: our heroines enjoy the riches found in streets of Messantia…

Arrival of Queen Zenobia to Messantia, capital city of Argos causes a huge hue and cry. Massive crowds gather to see fabulously rich Zenobia, a woman who is admittedly most powerful woman of all Hyboria. King Milos is also there to see his most important guest. It is an annual tradition but one that far more important than any matters of peace and war.

It is a simple matter really. Aquilonia stands as head above other Western Kingdoms and as such it can, should King Conan want it, unleash hell in Argos and sack Messantia. Even if Messantian spears would be enough to stop the famed Black Dragons the endless wars would turn prosperous and civilized kingdom into a bankrupt robber baron’s cave. Thus it is Queen Zenobia who says what should be done as she carries the weight of Aquilonia’s heavily armored cavalry and endless array of cut throats of free companies.

Yet King Milos is no mere puppet. It is after all that he saved Copan’s life from hanging in traitor’s noose and his eldest son’s blade that allowed Conan to gather his host and take back kingdom that was rightfully his. Conan has never forgotten this deed and ever since that Milos and Conan have been friends in peace and allies in war. Milos knows he can push Zenobia to a corner and he got away the last time he did it too. All she got from her complaints from Usurper were merely slap in her bottom and laughter with a hint to be a better negotiator next time.

The issue in annual negotiations is one of trade and such details are a mighty bore to Usurper. Thus they are best left to hands of Queen Zenobia, who has mind of a money lender and tongue of a swindler. She has thus no difference to King Milos. Needless to say the two smile and greet each other with overwhelming words of honey as they praise kingdom’s of each other in most lavish parade arranged to celebrate Queen Zenobia’s arrival.

The Ladies in Waiting and especially Princess Radegund the parade is most interesting affair but they soon find themselves in a golden cage of King Milos’ palace. Their days would be ones filled with endless array of fixing make up and sitting in luxurious divans waiting for something, anything, to happen. This is a perfect arrangement to Queen Zenobia’s own ladies in waiting who have already made arrangements. Selected merchants will arrive to amaze them with their wares, slaves and gifts.

However, Princess Radegund is not as well prepared nor her own ladies in waiting so well established as to have such things happen with a mere flick of a finger. Thus Julia suggests to Radegund who is merely trying to sit as elegantly as possible in her divan that they should go out for shopping. It would be exciting and then she could impress her mother with stuff she had bought. A new beautiful gown will surely impress her mother and show that she is no little girl but a proper young lady.

Radegund is immediately with the plot and she goes to pest knight that she should go out immediately for shopping. Even the most battle hardened knights have weak moments and this is one of those. He tells about her idea to Zenobia who allows it, as long as the knight accompanies Princess Radegund. She also gives a little bit of gold to young priest who would be perfect, reliable at least, to carry it.

However, as soon as Radegund sees priest with the pouch she demands to see how much there is and to have it. She will hear none of his complaints and grabs the pouch from the bewildered priest. As the two argue with the most polite fashion Julia taxes half of the gold to her own safekeeping while finally telling to Radegund that shopping means that women do not pay anything and men pay everything. With these words of wisdom Princess Radegund and her ladies in waiting slip to see the busy streets of Messantia.

The group ultimately ends up in a rather large merchant house. There is some trouble as local nobles do not seem to understand that whenever Aquilonian princess is visiting a merchant, that merchant will only serve her entourage. Fortunately and differences in opinion are quickly settled as fair headed knight and his group of six armored knights bares their swords. After all, no silk cape is worth dying and certainly not when sober and visiting a market in broad daylight. Julia is certain that things will go well, after all, she paid considerable amount of her gold to ensure this is the best merchant house of Messantia. And if it is not, she’ll make sure Radegund will whine about it to Zenobia.

The merchant might fear the knights but it is the glimmer of gold in his eyes as he starts to sell his wares in a properly oily fashion. Since girls are Aquilonians it is Aquilonian cuts and costumes they’ll wear. Julia’s choice is naturally the cutting edge of next year’s fashions hitting Tarantia. Daring arm licking sleeves with fur linings and flicker of a hint of underskirt should drive any mortal man mad. She also takes command to make sure her friends avoid fashion disasters but she soon notices that it is impossible to find anything fitting to others.

Radegund just doesn’t seem to find anything she’d fancy and she is getting visibly angry ripping apart silk gowns that don’t fit her. Fat Merchant swallows hard as he sees his wares destroyed but cold glint in knights’ eyes tell him to not bother with such minor details. Besides, his worries are easily tempered by a bullion very quiet priest is carrying.

Emilia likes dresses. She likes them so much she’d like to wear two or three dresses at the same time as she cannot decide what should be best. Furthermore, she seems to have some kind of vision problems and selection of colors that would drive Julia blind. She just cannot see how yellow and pink could ever possibly match. Perhaps Emilia lives in a wrong decade, a century… alright, a millennia?

If Emilia knows nothing of dresses Livia must have lived in a cave. She insists that every single dress she is presented makes her look like a woman of average modesty. She insists of wearing a modest gown that was fashionable perhaps few hundred years ago. It is a kind of a gown that is publicly worn only by old geezers with their other leg in grave, embittered widows or women in funerals of priests of Mitra. To make her look even more gray she insists on wearing her silks in mottled colors of forest green and dull blue. Even so when Julia tightens up the belt on Livia’s waist to show just how narrow her wasp waist is Livia claims it makes her look like a harlot. Then again, there is a point. Julia’s mother used to dress up like that when visiting boudoirs of rich merchants for role playing virtuous maidens to be ravished…

With Radegund getting visibly angry at her lack of a good dress Julia immediately suggests that they’ll eat here lunch. Sugar and fruits keeps Radegund happy while Julia arranges more patterns to be delivered for their judgment. However, even the new dress models do not seem to satisfy Radegund who is now giggling after eating way too much sugar and who enjoys beating up the servants presenting her the dresses. Fact that everyone else seems to have made their shopping makes her even angrier. Thus Julia suggests another idea. They would select first some nice, that is exquisite, jewelry and then select dress to match. This suits Radegund nicely who finds (with the helpful assistance of all other girls) finally something to wear. Then Julia just happens to find a discarded pattern to match and Radegund cannot but laugh at her excellent taste. Julia also reminds Radegund that purple is the new black, or is it that black is new purple?

Next phase is finding shoes. Julia instructs Radegund that women must buy shoes as they make her feel good. Furthermore, the higher the heels the better. Radegund nods and is immediately ready to run for a shoe maker but Julia grabs her arm to stop her and tell the next important lesson of being a Princess. Princesses just do not run to stores, they order merchants to come to them! Radegund nods to this piece of wisdom and immediately barks orders to her knights to behead the fat merchant pig unless she gets new shoes at this very instant. Julia is so proud of Radegund, she’ll make a perfect Queen! With knight’s blade on his throat the slaves run like hunted by thousand demons. Meanwhile Radegund giggles at sweating merchant and pokes his fat belly with her elbow once and for while. He screams like pig with every hit to much delight of the girls…

Fortunately to merchant slaves actually work hard today and there is soon a suitable selection for Aquilonian princess. The mountain of shoes provides everything to every taste. Julia is in heaven. After all, her new pair was lost in the trip here. They were so brutally violated by that idiot Livia! However, the presence of shoes soothes her mind and she decides to strangle Livia somewhat later. Shoes! Perhaps in the evening? Shoes! More shoes! Shoe heaven! This strange magic seems to have caught Radegund, Livia and Emilia too and they all jump to shoe mountain to swim in this sea of shoes to look for that perfect pair.

Many many hours later they have finally found a single pair for each.

The payment is no issue as Radegund pays everything for her entourage. Naturally Julia picks up few extra rings, just in case, since she can. I mean, gold is girl’s best friend, especially in these perilous times when portable wealth can always be needed. Even the knights indulge themselves in shopping. Fair headed knight selects a new purple cape that, as every girl immediately notices, matches his dash perfectly. Especially Livia examines tips of her shoes very intently while blushing. But he is so dashing! As far as the other knights are concerned, they couldn’t care less.

Sun is already well into afternoon as they head back to the palace and air is cooling to show first signs of evening. It is also a time when good people return to their homes and streets are taken over by villainous scum. Knights know this quite well and hurry the girls back to the palace but Radegund wants to go through the market place first. Fully knowing that her mind is impossible to turn once decision has been made fair headed knight cannot but accept this but he insists that as soon as sun dies, he’ll escort her to the palace, by carrying her if necessary.

Meanwhile oblivious Radegund and Emilia have found a sweet store and are eating honey and sugar coated apples, their greatest pleasure. Meanwhile Livia is more observant of all strange things that Mitra has created. Walking past many stalls she notices spice merchant. Surprised at so many spices found across all the Hyborian lands she cannot but ponder what kind of special herbs the man is talking about to her. Why cannot he have them all in display? Looking at him totally baffled she goes away, strange merchant they have here. Meanwhile Julia upon hearing this story cannot but agree to Julia’s assessment and she even asks the merchant to know to avoid him.

With Livia telling her the instructions Julia goes to see the spice merchant. A nod and wink later he provides her some lotus, dreaded black lotus, right from the forests of South. Julia immediately supplies her considerable herb collection but what interests her most is the infamous Red Lotus. Not that she needs it but virtuous Livia might be in need of finding her inner harlot…

So Ladies in Waiting finished off their perilous adventure. Many more adventures would be ahead of them. These stories would also be told to young maidens of Aquilonia so that they would learn to become good and decent wives…

Session 20: Where our heroines seek foreign entanglements…

With their shopping spree over the Zenobia’s entourage spends their next day in boredom. Zenobia is still negotiating for she is an efficient woman of noble birth who knows what she wants and takes it.

Finally the evening arrives cooling the city but the air in palace is still too hot to women of Aquilonia who have accustomed to cooler climates and warmer, more modest, dresses. Thus they have invaded a comfortable bath and lazily spent their times there tending their beauty and passing gossip from what they have seen in day. Later they’d sleep on castle roof that has been turned into a bed room with silk tents and luxurious divans. However, until moon would rise they’d stay here in baths.

This perfect evening turns into a perfect night as King Milos’ two sons arrive. They are tall, lanky, and muscular and have freed their waist long raven black hair to freedom. Needless to say, they are men at their very best and have arrived to see guests of their father. The women cannot but be totally ravished by their looks and they slowly but surely come around these two men.

Livia is particularly smitten by these two perfect specimen of manhood, and what kind of manhood. She blushes all red at and immediately hides behind a marble pillar sobbing. They look like Gods, not just a God but two Gods, but there is only one true God, Mitra! She hits her head against pillar in vain hope that the pain would blind her eyes! Mitra! Mitra! Why you test me like this!

Radegund takes immediately command as she is the noblest lady present. She immediately imitates her mother as she was in their time on boat. She says nothing and just stands tall in her heels looking around her with a haughty bored look in her eyes, just looking for something, anything, to be tortured to death. The very epitome of Aquilonian Princess! This makes a huge impression to two Princes who have so far considered Radegund, as said by her brother Taurus earlier today, as a child but no, she is a lady of marriage age. Her height also shows can now bear children too.

Princes strike a discussion and then entertain ladies with song and play. Meanwhile they would like to drink a bit and Livia immediately submits herself to serving the party. This takes considerable skill as blushing girl keeps staring her own shoes not knowing what to say or do. Is she now betraying Mitra? What about that knight who is also there, watching this all! What can I do? Mitra! Guide me!

Meanwhile the other women sit with their eyes glued on two men whose brotherly love knows no boundaries. They share everything in their minds in war and love together. Julia is peeling their clothes off with her eyes and trying her best to keep herself calm as younger Prince complains of shearing heat. His caring brother cannot but open his shirt to comfort his suffering. He returns this favor somewhat later as his older brother accidentally spills over the wine. He cannot but lick his chin clean…

Perfectly behaving Radegund might be oblivious of what is happening but Julia and Zenobia’s ladies in waiting surely aren’t. The blond beauty is head and shoulders above the rest. She makes her move to distract two Princes from Radegund. In essence she promises to guide them on ins and outs of Court in Tarantia, as well as her too. Julia sees a fight she cannot win and stays wisely back pondering how to counter this move. It all depends on Radegund’s next move…

Yet, out of nowhere comes Emilia who is bored to no end on sitting with her back straight and playing dinner. She immediately blurts out that blond woman has a Stygian disease. Sure it was a rumor that she was telling in the first place but she heard it again few times from tales of kitchen maids so it must be true. It is true! Two Princes quickly fall back upon hearing this dreadful disease.

Blond lady in waiting immediately lashes out at Emilia slapping her at her face and Emilia drags lady with her to the pool. She is older and probably stronger and Emilia so she uses this opportunity to pull Emilia’s head below the surface to drown her. As Emilia struggles in vain the Princes cannot but see how Aquilonian Princess deals with this situation. And deal she does! Radegund jumps up and down in air in her high heels and giggles on top of her lungs and two women fight each other. She finally has no choice but to fall down on marble floor and roll about as it is so funny!

Fair headed knight does nothing. The rumor and its spreaders were known to him and he knew from whispers of blond lady in bed that she is just looking for opportunity to hit back. She lost her calm but then again, even queen’s ladies in waiting do not get that many opportunities to impress foreign princes. Furthermore, he usually has to pay to see women beating up each other in gutter fights in slums of Tarantia. These two are also good looking which is a definite bonus.

Emilia feels her life escaping her and she springs back into action with the same fury she always does when beating up Livia and other smaller children. She bites blond lady and drags her hear pulling it off and both women start to punch out each other for real. Emilia might be smaller but she is as strong as boys. There is blood on the water and fight gets deadly serious. Knight knows one of them will die in a pool. Yet Radegund appears to make no effort to stop her fun he jumps into pool and grabs both fighters into his iron embrace. The joy is over and he takes them both to cool down, and makes sure there are knights on both women’s doors to keep things down. He’ll talk about this to Zenobia in the morning…

During all this fighting the women have watched the whole show with the exception of Julia. She pressed to seek shelter against strong chest of older prince looking at him to his eyes and pondering if he could protect her and perhaps … comfort her later. With Radegund rolling about like a petulant small child and most obvious woman disgraced the seemingly subtle moves by Julia signal two princes they are dealing with a consummately professional temptress. It is also a sign of Julia’s inexperience and burning ambition that she does not realize how obvious her moves really were. However, the two princes are no strangers to fortune seekers and cannot but accept Julia’s personal invitation to examine her further…

Indeed, as the moon rises and the other women have retired for rest Julia wanders alone to the palace gardens guided by soft play of flute. The two princes are there, naked and basking in moon light. They sip their wine and entertain each other with playing and softest of embraces. When Julia arrives two brothers look at each other and smile wolfishly, a woman in bed too, how kinky…

As Julia drops her white silk scarf she also shows she has nothing to hide. It is her first true experience in these matters and she could not have better guides…

So Ladies in Waiting finished off their perilous adventure. Many more adventures would be ahead of them. These stories would also be told to young maidens of Aquilonia so that they would learn to become good and decent wives…

Session 21: Where our heroines ponder the liaisons past, present and future…

The next morning starts with a combination of satisfaction, doubt, indifference and burning fear of Wrath of Mitra! Sister Agrippina is up first, praying before statue of Mitra and asking for guidance for she has betrayed Him so horrible way last night. Her thoughts have been impure. If only she was back in monastery where things were always so clear and firm guidance was there to protect from temptations. She had, even watched those two men to eyes! What a shame! Agrippina’s already sore as she has already screamed for Mitra for hours.

Meanwhile Julia stretches her lithe body like a cat or a snake in her divan. Things could not go any better. The two princes are obviously in her pocket and all she has to do is to make sure she’ll be their most endowed mistress or perhaps a wife even. However, that would require some serious plotting to get rid of King Milos who is supposed want to marry his sons to Aquilonian royal family. Then again, even a position of a mistress would bring her own weight in jewelry. These two men were also exquisite treat for a true connoisseur like she is. Julia looks herself from a mirror and knows she is now finally ready to carry the legacy of her mother. All men are bastards and will suffer in her hands. Let them tremble in her feet, except those who are so very pretty and serve her!

Emilia is at foul mood. Why did the stupid knight stop their fight just when it was getting exciting? Besides she already won as she grabbed from that blond bitch her hair. It is a victory sign much like the scalps that those Pictish savages collect. Emilia ponders things a bit. As a matter of fact she has also liked to run in forest naked and painted. Wonder if the priest also likes to do that too? Then they could do it together every day and hunt down rabbits and birds and anything else that moves! She is now getting more and more excited.

Just when Sister Agrippina thinks that things couldn’t go wrong she hears familiar voice behind her. It is Prince Taurus. He has been away from girls lately and spent his time in Milos’ library studying ancient arts, probably up to no good. She curtseys as demurely as possibly to her nemesis. Within blink of an eye she is on her knees and Taurus is riding her while trying to rip of her hair. Yet as she is at her most perilous moment the Taurus whispers to her ear with his tongue as smooth as silk. With Livia now telling him anything and everything to avoid pain he makes sure that Mitra is divine God who rules over them all. He gives his divine rights to King of Aquilonia, Conan the Usurper who took his crown from those who had been abandoned by Mitra. Surely she agrees to that? Livia nods with teary eyes as pain in her arms is something she knows can break her apart like a twig. But Taurus hasn’t really started yet. Isn’t it so that thus sons and daughters of King of Aquilonia, in this land blessed by Mitra in His infinite Wisdom, are also divine? Thus she, insignificant harlot and whore, should thus obey him in everything he says. Livia nods, realizing now that Taurus is divine ambassador of Mitra sent to test her faith and punish her for her impure thoughts! Subsequently he wants to know from now on, fully and as early in the morning, what Radegund and her ladies in waiting are up to. Livia’s rambling monologue is incoherent but enough to get his machinations on the move…

Taurus’ next stop is business and pleasure. Julia has managed to get herself blessed even if she was too busy to get into morning mass. Thus Taurus needs to get her to know exactly how long he has to keep up this charade with his sister. Furthermore, Julia is the only woman in court who is truly worthy of being his mistress.

Taurus is a bold knight and thus he immediately seizes the opportunity. He pushes Julia, like a helpless maiden she is, under him and starts questioning her for Radegund’s latest movements and plans. Julia soon notices that Taurus has some inside information, but how? Who could it be? A servant girl waggling her tongue perhaps? She has to know who the traitor is but she knows she just cannot get it from Taurus. Not directly perhaps but sooner or later he’ll drop enough crumbs for her to grasp in. Then she can use that traitor to feed anything she wants to Taurus.

With Taurus hugging and kissing her she confirms everything Taurus knows, and slips something more, enough to keep him happy. Taurus is so perfect specimen of manhood yet so utterly clueless about ways of men and women. Julia screams suitably terrorized by Taurus’ bold moves in bed and inside her knows her continuing survival depends on her keeping her last night’s catch secret. Julia knows Taurus is man version of her half a dozen years ago, utterly certain of herself and very vengeful. Thankfully he doesn’t seem to know anything about it. Or is he hiding it? How can she turn Milos’ sons against Taurus, yet keep Taurus happy? Why has he been away studying in last day? Is he plotting with King Milos already?

Emilia is finally released from her captivity at the same time as her blond competitor. Since Emilia is in happy mood she immediately starts to taunt her opponent by showing blond woman the ponytail she tore off. The woman explodes and attacks Emilia who cleverly drops and kicks away the tail leaving her completely innocent. Knight doesn’t see this but he does notice the fight so he again grasps two women in his mighty grasp and drags them to Queen Zenobia, now busily getting ready for tonight’s massive festivities and in no mood for nonsense. Her decision is swift and final. Blond lady will be whipped and Emilia will go free, at least for now. Nor does she want to see or hear anymore fighting. The thing left unsaid is, if you have a problem, make sure none else knows about it. That is the way of Court of Tarantia of Aquilonia. And now she wants a proper make up.

Giggling at her perfect save before harsh but fair Zenobia Emilia is on top of her game. She immediately rushes to young priest to explain her successes. On top of her mind is getting married but the priest hadn’t really had any jealous rages yet, at least nothing like her father had when she got new brothers and sisters. See, the rages are part of getting married and having babies. Thus she cuts the chase immediately and asks her one true love the most obvious thing: Aren’t you jealous do you love me? The baffled priest has no idea what the Emilia is talking about and subsequently blunders about something like no. Emilia goes totally bersek. What? His priest should be in love with her! It was agreed with Dexitheus a long time and he was supposed to marry her! He is broken!

Weeping Emilia rushes off from that stupid boy and goes to squat in corner of her room and cry. He is stupid and she will not to that party with him. She will stay in her room. She’ll never love him and she hates him for ever…

So Ladies in Waiting finished off their perilous adventure. Many more adventures would be ahead of them. These stories would also be told to young maidens of Aquilonia so that they would learn to become good and decent wives…

Hm...I think the ladies are really revealing their true colours. Things at court are getting a little wild, indeed. Poor Livia--it seems she is getting overwhelmed by events, while Emilia is eager to be overwhelmed. As for Julia--what a shameless conniving hussy...

I can't help but notice that Radegund's seeming policey of 'fun before everything' is reaping what it has sown.

Well, yes. The characters are obviously still quite young and Radegund is particularly immature.

She has tried to attract attention from her violent drunkard womanizing father with little success, after all, he hardly notices her from his usual galore of blood and circuses. She learned from him her willingness to act instantly without second thought and wild Emilia is hardly the best guide to make her avoid such actions.

Now she has taken much more attraction to her polished and steely willed mother. As you can see Radegund is now acting as an observant and obedient daughter whenever she is with her mother. Most unfortunately she still doesn't have self discipline to control her actions. Yes, she is still very spoiled little princess. However, the influence of her friends, Livia and Julia is also molding her. Gentle and timid Livia has made Radegund to understand that everything should be guided by Wisdom of Mitra. Meanwhile Julis is teaching her vitally important skills in fashion, make-up and ultimately in court intrigue too.

The end result will be eventually a a great beauty of poise and sophistication who will rule her realm with an iron will (nominally under her husband's fist ofcourse)...
