From what I understand from Matts post, this is a temporary problem. Shutting down the line will give them time and manouvering room to set up a new line.
I forsee B5, BFE, SST and some new games coming out and the lines firing back up. (I smell new coke again)
I will continue to support Mongoose and push the game here in Canada, expand the market. Also our local gaming club will continue to passionately play the game.
Matt, I hope to see the mini's line back on track soon.
In the mean time me and our gaming club will be making a LARGE order to snap up as many models as possible to tide us over

I would not be opposed to 2009 being some sort of 'relaunch' even if it invalidated, or at least made my current minis "less valid"... I think even if there is a scale change it's not as big a deal as it would be with many things.
Ships in Babylon 5 are somewhat oversized as-is, since the ship is effectively a tiny point on the board for gameplay purposes.
The scale issues are already many, as the scale between ships of the same fleet isn't very good, usually.
So, anyway, if 2009 brings something interesting, like a completely resculpted core line, I'm all for it. I just doubt B5: ACTA will bubble up on my purchase lists anytime soon.

Just out of curiosity, where has this "they will be relaunched in 2009" idea come from, Matt most certainly did not say any such thing?
If they are not profiteable now, when they already have stock, how would they be profitable with a relaunch when they start with zero stock, and have to re-establish distribution, marketing, sales contracts etc?

Hence the confusion.
I'm absolutely positive we'll see B5 mini's again, whether by Mongoose alone or with a third party.
It makes money on its own and it just needs a smaller foundry or a deal with a larger foundry who is producing 2-3 other ranges.

I tend to agree. The statements re mothballing seem to refer to general mini production - it didn't specifically say anything about ACTA. I'm reasonably certain that what is being alluded to here is prepainted SST minis at some point in the future.

I’m disappointed but when I decided to go into ACTA last year I made it a point of picking up the fleet boxes slowly since then. Sometime this February or March, I’ll probably pick a couple more of the ships not in the fleet boxes and maybe the Psi-Corp stuff.
Wishful thinking makes me think maybe Mongoose will restart ACTA sometime in the future with a different strategy.
1>Outsource the Casting. Valiant Enterprises, for example, does a fine job casting a wide variety of things in both pewter and resin. http://www.veltd.net/studio.htm With their experience, they could easily correct for poor casting quality found in the ACTA line.
2>Limit Releases. Take a major war a year and release only ships for that war.
a> They could do this chronologically and start with the Earth/Dilgar war.
b> Put out a source book that details this war and provide a good campaign.
c> By limiting it to one major war, they would limit how many molds (if any) need to be reworked, thus reducing the cost each year. Plus, since ship designs were used in numerous wars, moving to the next war would also have limited costs. For example, when they moved from the Dilgar war to the Earth/Minbari war they would only need to rework some of problem Earth molds and Minbari molds.
