Richard was up for money, though; if the EA had paid him off he'd have swapped sides. Not true for Ben.

No, he wouldn't. Once it turned out that Ben was fighting purely for the EA, Richard wouldn't even talk to me about selling me any of his services. We got on great before and after the event too, so it wasn't that he disliked me in particular - he was just refusing to work for the EA.

to be fair as well Richard did say he was paid off in several early games (but still did better than me!!!)

also our Admiral wisely invested heavily in new technology - which proved extremely useful! Liati's with GEG 1 and 2 - a joy to behold and use - ask Centauri Admiral and Jim.

Hmm, we beat the Centauri in every single round of the event, Ben gave 4 Credits in one turn of the campaign...hardly smacks of "we would definitely not won and probably would have lost" to me!

I think saying you were in a winning position every round is fair, you actually lost most rounds on Sunday. so gaining 4 battleships equivalent didn't make a difference at all? fair enough, I mean the whole mercenary weird abgreement at earth won you the game, gawd knows who came up with that dastardly plan.

I don't know what you mean by you saying we lost most rounds on Sunday as we still won more games than the Centauri in every round...

Having Ben on our side in the last game really messed us up in the final game on Earth as that was a game we'd have easily won (come on, Gaim on our side, Raiders on theirs!) Ben only went along with this because he didn't want to disagree with the other three players there. Again I don't see how this won us the campaign...

As for the credits - we lost more money trying to buy off Richard and the fact that he had a Gaim fleet people fought against actually cost us more. In the end those two players probably cancelled each other out.

No problem, the system wasn't that clear to anyone but Matt and the admirals.

Each round, you only held what you won that turn. Unfortunately that rendered the early rounds not worth a huge deal unless you inflict a lot of damage. That's why after the first day we changed our strategy from "win the games" to "cause as much damage as possible, regardless of cost". We won fewer systems but caused a lot more attrition.

We thought we'd scammed the system by sacrificing myself and Greg's dead fleet, getting free replacements but Matt balanced it up by giving you a special bounty (this wasn't unfair, but we thought we'd beaten his system!)
