AA Ships?

Hi all! I am relatively new to Naval Wargaming but did play a WWII game at Historicon this year. In the game, they had some British DD or Light Cruisers that were primarily designed for AA. Is this something that’s going to be included in OOB? Did other fleets besides the British have these?

Just curious.

Thanks!

Yes, they are there (the Dido class for example). The USN "Atlanta" class is also an AA cruiser.

Thanks for the quick response DM! I dont suppose the IJN had anything like that?

Thanks again!

Well, sort of. The IJN didn't have any AA cruisers but they did develop an AA destroyer that should be in OOB.

The RN also converted some of the the WW1 era C class cruisers in AA cruisers. From the point of view of V@S stats their a bit difficult since their weaponary varied almost from ship to ship. There's still one kicking around in Belfast.

Don't believe the RN ever built a dedicated AA destroyer but the late war destroyers did have improved AA what with high angle main armament and 20mm Oerlikons on any empty bit of deck.

The C Class AA conversions are also in OOB :)

Caroline is indeed still in Belfast but she wasn't converted to an AA cruiser (she was from an earlier incarnation of the C class light cruiser and spent WW2 as an HQ ship). There are hopes that she'll become a museum ship when she is decommissioned (she is the last floating surviving ship from Jutland)
