A try at a Monk class

you can get your unarmed up to d10 damage with feats, a d12 if your khitan or vhendyan. no need for it to be a class feature.

I had a player who created a high level character who grappled. Armed with the Crushing Grip feat and specialised with Grapple, he was nearly unbeatable. I think he was either a scholar or a soldier, but he was impressive with that feat. Inflicting that damage to Con was so devastating - and unrealistic. He could grapple a charging rhino and bring it down by crushing its Con.

I can see that feat being even worse in the hands of a monkish class who does higher damage than d6. Even with an auto-crit... wow. When that is applied to Con, the character will drop people left and right.

Vincent can you post Mr. Rhino-Crushers stats, that would be interesting to see.

BTW adios to Royce Gracie and the UFC if he ever ponied up.

I've been thinking about creating a strangler of Yajur by combining Martial Discipline using the grappling style and Barbarian, along with the Crushing Grip feat. I need a cool bodyguard/assassin for a decadent Zingaran noble worshipping Hastur and that should do the trick.

Another thought I had was does one consider the class to be more physically based or maybe for it to be more mystical.

If it is the former perhaps using the feats like brawl/ martial arts, improved brawl/martial arts, combat expertise or defensive martial arts, combined with standard soldier feats and maybe some feats from the links I provided in the above post.

If more mystical maybe use the feats and links in the sentence above maybe with maybe the soldier feat progression. So with a regular feat it could be the same but with formation feats the monk could get a BASIC sorcery school. Basic only as their focus can be seen as more as being in tune with one’s self as opposed to casting spells per se. Example the counter magic can be seen as the monks inner fortitude to resist magic, calm of the adept as being increased inner awareness, etc…

It is also posible to use either the Scholar class or the Soldier class to create a "monk" like character. The Scholar class has the advantage to taking extra skill points and feats if you don't take magic. It would would be possible to take only Oriental Magic at first and be done with it. Or just take only the Oriental Magic advanced spells. And use your feats to round out the rest (if you take a Khitan then you would get an extra 3 feats as a scholar, 1st lvl, 5th lvl, & 10 lvl). Plus the Khitan gets an extra feat upon creation and bonuses to Knowledge and Move Silently checks.

The Soldier class has the advantages of lots of feats to create your character. And don't forget that the character is able to use his INT bonus for skills to anything. If you take the Vandhyan race you would get the 3 extra feats.

The book Hyboria's Finest has Greater Unarmed Strike and Unarmed Multi-Attack which greatly increased the power of the unarmed strike.
