A Question about roleplaying and viewpoints

Hopeless

Mongoose
Okay you've been asked to create normal characters for a Legend game and in your first session your gm has described you searching an old catacomb thats partially flooded due to part of it leads straight into the nearby sea.

Your gm has named that sea the Tames after some ancient river that before the cataclysm was much smaller and has now submerged some ancient capital of the old world.

You break open a long sealed iron door and discover a small chamber overlooking a room thats filled with water and opposite is a wall adorned by a runic symbol.

Curious one of you moves up to take a closer look as another looks out at the water below and suddenly something bursts out of the water and lunges towards you!

Caught by surprise that character is caught by their arm and is being dragged over the bannister and back down into the water filled chamber below and two of your comrades are holding onto him for dear life.

You however are transfixed for as you approached that runic symbol it starts to glow and whilst you can hear your friends shrieking you can hear something else and hypnotised you reach forward and touch the symbol...

Everything changes and now the ancient debris ridden room is now clean and bright as if new and your friends are still screaming for help but not because the monster is trying to drag their friend into the water... its now holding on for dear life as the room below is now devoid of any water and a rushing vehicle screams past below and you have no idea what has happened...

What would you do at this point?

Several possibilities and it all depends on the characters history and skills. 1) We have been transported to the past before the cataclysm. 2) We have been transported to the distant future. 3) This is a complex illusion my friend is still being dragged under by some monster. 4) Kill the monster and then figure out where or when we are.

The most logical response is to simply kill the damn thing and then sort stuff.

Is the 'monster' a beast or something humanoid? A beast - then kill it and sort stuff out. Something rational - pull them all up.

Been wondering about running a campaign where the characters as per the first message in this thread find themselves in the distant past sort of similar to the story from the Timeline movie or from the distant past stuck in a post apocalyptic future (What was the name of that Sean Bean movie? :?: ).

Currently have a group running under Legend and seriously considering revealing this in game although the players have already sussed some of the details so it won't come as a shock.

There's a cult or order known as the Lightbringers who was formed by people travelling to and from the distant past smuggling knowledge and supplies to help rebuild civilisation that was destroyed in an unexplained cataclysm.

So in essence in the present we have a company developing and researching new concepts including establishing a manned settlement on Mars, exploring the rest of the solar system which is being released as a cover story to hide the fact they have found a way to travel over a millennia into the future where they've learned at some point between fifty to a hundred and fifty years from now an apocalyptic cataclysm will eventually wipe most of the human race off the planet...

Even if my party make it into the past it'll be around a century from now and the only person who could get them back was murdered several decades ago which is the reason the Lightbringer Cult is slowly dying as the only people who know the secret of travelling to both times are the blood descendants of the founder of the Lightbringers whom are busy dodging assassins in the past and the future...

On the plus side they've already met one but I'm not saying who it is!
