How does Lankhmar compare to Thieves World?

I have never read Lieber or gamed in Lankhmar.

I did however read the original Thieves World collections and loved the Chaosium boxed set.

Because the human psyche (or at the least my psyche) likes to project what it knows onto what it doesn't know I have always pictured Lankhmar as a similar setting. That is to say when someone talks about it I conjure up images of Sanctuary (though I picture Lankhmar as being a bigger city for some reason).

Are the two settings/cities similar, or am I way off?

In fact I would say Moorcock's city of Nadsokor is what Lankhmar might look like in the future.

The original Leiber city is more fun, has more sex, and is somewhat Discworld too (with the street of cults and her rats society).

Always wondered if Pratchet was a Fritz Leiber fan... he was a roleplayer so it might be the inspiration behind the city of Ankhmorpork... come to think about it sounds a bit like Lankhmar if you squint :)

Ran games set in Lankhmar in the past using the TSR stuff, went down well... and from what I've read of the new Lankhmar book so far its looking/reading quite well, definatley an improvement on TSR's effort.

City has't changed much the maps look very similar so I may get some reuse out of the old Lankhmar maps.

Looks like DBC has avoided eating another Stormtrooper Mug

I'm certain that Pratchett is a big fan of Leiber's work.

Check out the two ruffians Rincewind bumps into during his hasty exit from the blazing Ankh-Morpork in the opening chapter of The Colour Of Magic. They bear a more than passing resemblance to a couple of other well known swordsmen... 8)
