weber and I think someone white did a universe - shiva option/death ground books
Actually those series of books were based on a campaign Weber ran in the game Starfire (which he wrote the 2nd edition of)

That's because only a few moaners don't like Star Trek. It's the classic sci-fi setting. Even if B5 had a better story and BSG has much better realism and Star Wars has Jedi and so on... Star Trek has lasted longer than any of them - except Dr Who, of course. Longest running sci-fi ever.

I'm not saying that Star Trek is a bad setting... just that that the ships are as aesthetically pleasing as John Prescott and would be equally unappealing to collect and paint.

Sorry but 'Omegs' 'Nova' 'Avenger'
Arguing about ST not having pretty ships then Earth Force is famous (infamous?) for making ugly flying bricks.

I'm hoping its not Trek. I just think theres much better stuff out there, and there is plenty of ST stuff available.

Eye of the beholder, my good man. There's lots of people that like the way a lot of the Star Trek ships look - besides, saying everything in ST is ugly is pretty ridiculous when there are so many different races and styles...

The Enterprise-D is a stunningly beautiful ship to my mind. I also love that I can look at it and know what are phaser emitters, where the torpedo launchers are, which are transporter emitters, where the brdge is and so on.

With B5 ships, detail is sketchy at best.

So many races, so many horrible ships… I understand that some people like looking at these things, but to me it’s a little bit like someone buying an adult magazine filled completely with pictures of *really* large women… I just don’t understand it, but fine if it’s your bag, I suppose.

I even went out of my way a while back to find some ‘Trek ships I liked the look of, and pretty much came up with a blank… the only ships that I can find in the whole selection that didn’t make me want to attack my eyeballs with a power sander after looking at them for more than an instant are a couple of the Romulan ships (The Valdore and D’deridex types), and they’re merely passable.

Sure, some of the B5 designs aren’t pretty, but at least there’s a few fleets that have outstandingly well designed ships in them (The Centauri (pretty much the whole fleet minus the Liati and Adira), Narn and Brakiri in particular, but I do have a soft spot for the Nova and Omega, too… not so much pretty as menacing, which is almost as good in my book, then there's Warlocks, Marathons and Chronii, which just look cool in my opinion)

Whereas the Federation ships are all silly flying saucer things with loo rolls stuck to them in various locations, the Klingon craft range from slightly ugly to absolutely terrible, while the Cardassian ships are simply irredeemably horrific to look at, and that's just for starters.... none of the ships that I've seen in ST look half as cool as a G'Quan, an Avioki or a Primus... let alone the SSV Normandy.

Again, I understand that people have different tastes, but to me most of the 'Trek ship designs been thrashed to within an inch of destruction with a really big ugly stick, and no matter how much I try to like them, I simply can't manage it.

Personally, I´d most like to see a SG license, there are enough factions involved (Earth Asgard, Wraiths, Ori, free Jaffa (sp?), Goa´Uld, Replicants (Atlantis)...), the series still has a strong fan base, but has been oop for long enough that the licence might be cheap enough to allow for some serious profit - you lnow, a bit like B5 6 years ago.

But for the love of whatever godsyou worship, please let it not be Andromeda...

I don´t believe in either ST or SW for CTA 3e, and other series? Serenity perhaps, yes. Maybe Lexx? Mission Earth? I wouldn´t expect anything like that.

Games? X, MoO, EVE, would all be pretty interesting. But whatever the licence will be, I think the success of the game will utimately depend on how good the rules will be, and on whether or not there will be minis

well then again a Universal fleet book with a number of ships would be good

with the present licences it can include ships from the following:

MGT Traveller
the "New Licence"
2000AD universes including
Durham Red / Strontium Dog (DRed has very cool looking/sounding future warships in the more recent comincs / novels)
Judge Dread (Mega city plus Aliens)
Rogue Trooper (Nort / Southers)
Does Hammers Slammers have warships?
Starship Troopers ships /Skinny ships

use what you want and blow hell out each other :)

So playing American Civil War games (one of THE most popular periods) would not count as a decent game because there are only two armies/fleets?

lol, thats right. Imagine the complaints from battles involving 2 ironclads. "We just sat there for hours and hours. His ship and mine at point blank range pounding away at each other. No shot ever penetrating the other's armour. No maneuvering no nothing. Just 8 hours wasted rolling dice and nothing happening. At the end of the day we just called it a day and went home. Doubt we will play again."

im with Jim? I cant stand the look of ST ships... Romulan Warbirds from NG... pretty rocking. the defiant, also like... not so much anything else

Wow i disappear over the weekend and while I am away there is a Trek explosion, thought I was logged on to Star Treks Anonymous by mistake.

Even Hiff outed himself as a Star Trek geek.

As someone ancient enough to have watched the series live on TV when it was first shown in the UK I can definitely say life would not be the same without the Enterprise. (That is not to say I necessarily still like all the design of all of the ships, probably beceuse they are now too familiar).

I tell you something I hope it s not TNG/DS9 beceause the stat arguments on the Defiant are likely to leave even the Whitestar in the shade.

I still hope its a SG / SG Atlantis licence.

As was said, Game will depend on the rules, but we are talking Mongoose here so the rules are likely to be good.

My guess is that it may have a tie in with a licence that Rebellion have worked on, or are working on.

Looking at this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rebellion_Developments#List_of_games

I see that they have worked on Star Wars, this could also tie in with Mat's 'comment about the GL shrine.

I'm not really into Star Wars or Star Trek, so I hope it isn't either.

personaly I'd love to see a Homeworld based game, those ships are wonderful, just think that the series of video games is too old, one can hope right?

Other than a Star Wars licence, I can't guess, think a homegrown game would be better, why does it have to be from a licenced product?

Well not liking Star Trek ships is rather a matter of personal taste as has already been touched on by alot of folks but given the number of ships and races I still find it hard to understand how anyone can hate them ALL and yet love so many more of the B5 Ships. Oh don't get me wrong, I prefer the B5 designs overall, theyre just cool, but I DO like alot of the Star Trek Ships too. I must say though that saying 'all the centauri ships look great' doesnt really say much (or ANY of the ACTA ships really since around 90% of them were designed for B5 Wars by agents of gaming).

Theres plenty of Star Trek ships that are, frankly, munters, and if I'm honest theres probably less B5 Ships that I could look at and say 'yuk, that's an UGLY ship' but theres still ALOT of variety and some LOVELY looking ships.

The Sovereign, The Prometheus, The Defiant, The Akira (my personal favourite), The Jem'Haddar Battleship, The Klingon Vor'cha, The Romulan erm well pretty much ALL Romulan ships from TNG onwards look great, and the Borg Cube (yes it's not fancy but for sheer faceless menace it's a superb idea). That's the ships that I personally think look great (theres quite a few others that I certainly LIKE just not THAT much).

For B5 I like pretty much ALL the ships seen on the actual show except the Brakkiri ones.

Of the sci fi shows mentioned thusfar though think for a decent licenced wargame you really need more than 2 forces (and yes I know you can make up more forces and variants and so on but that's not really the same).

Star Trek immediately has loads of options with many distinct races.

Stargate as already noted would work pretty well at this point with there now being at least 4 races with decent fleets that can be covered (Wraith, SGC, Asgard, Goa'Uld) and fair few other options too (Ori, Replicator, Free Jaffa, Ancient). The only trouble with Stargate as a space based wargame is the HUGE tech gap between some fleets (B5 suffers from this as well and to be perfectly honest I never felt ACTA actually dealt with this problem particularly well with Shadows and Vorlons in particular never really feeling quite powerful enough and the PL system not really allowing for them to be appropriately nasty without just being OVERpowered).

Personally I'd be all for a Star Trek version (or a Star Wars version for that matter especially given how many of the wizards premade Star Wars ships I've alreayd got ;)) But I don't think that's all that likely as I'm fairly sure Wizards are likely to cling to that licence like a Mynock to a power cable :P

Personally I still think the B5 licence had a bit more mileage in it (maybe not for ACTA but I for one would have been very interested to give the now never to be gropos based wargame)
