5 point Raid Centauri Fleet

Eh,

Looking at the numbers, the weapons loadout on the Vorchan and Demos are almost identical. Sure the Vorchan has the 4AD of plasma accellerator, but the Demos gets 2 more AD of Ion Cannon and the 6AD of torps (or 3 if you want to think about it from a non slow-loading standpoint). Basically the interceptor makes me want the Demos over the Vorchan.

The Elutarians were an attempt to just cram more torpedoes into the list, but I'm now realizing the limitations of it (particularly the one turn on a primarily front arc fleet). The Sentri were an attempt to keep enemy fighters off me, but a Maximus can probably do the job much better (not to mention lend interceptor dice when needed).

That would leave the following:

6 Demos or Vorchan (I'll try out both and see what I think)
1 Centurian
1 Corvan
1 Maximus

I'm afraid I'm with kritikalfailure over this one. The Demos has substantially the same firepower as a Vorchan and when the torpedoes are reloading can Close Blast Doors without penalty, all on top of the Interceptor it has. The Elutarians complement the fleet nicely although personally I'd take a Balvarin and a Centurion but this part of the fleet is far more a matter of style and tactics. Depending on the opponent (or a tourney list), a single Corvan may be in order but a Maximus would be a bit of a waste with the abundance of Interceptors already present.

ARHHH Heresy! Actually I agree mostly - especially re the Demos

How about this?

6 Demos/Vorchans (3 raid)
1 Corvan (.5 raid)
1 Balvarin (1 raid)
Uptrade Sentris to Rutarians (.5 raid)

After looking at the Rutarian, they seem to be an absolute no-brainer upgrade with their higher hull, stealth, and utterly superior weapons loadout.

Granted they won't be much use against Narn...aside from forcing him to use his e-mines on my fighters for a few turns.

i would take out a demos for a maximus, and change the sentris for corvans but i like the torpedo idea, ive seen it rip some fleets apart in a single turn(although, if it doesnt, your screwed)

It's not a no-brainer because of the cost. If you want to invest the points, great, but otherwise the Sentri is the fighter of choice for most missions. The Rutarian gains stealth and hull along with firepower but gains nothing in dogfights, where your upgraded hull and stealth mean nothing. It is a superior fighter, but it comes with a price tag.

The Rutarian WOULD be a no brainer if it wasnt for the fact you get twice as many Sentris for the price. Personally I would favour a mix, mostly sentris to sweep enemy fighters and work as interceptors with a few Rutarians in the mix to strike enemy ships (The Rutarian is obviously a MUCH nastier fighter for hitting enemy ships (and has higher hull for braving antifighter defences).

The Vorchan vs Demos debate is a little more open. Personally I think the slow loading part of the Demos is offset by the fact that it plain and simple has more attack dice anyway! And the big point is that one interceptor. Not much on paper and it certainly wont make much difference in the face of a big salvoe but it WILL make a HUGE difference against stray shots (not to mention the obvious use of close blast doors while reloading torps as noted).

The Corvan is an excellent idea. Firstly having a scout around is always useful for redirecting all those torpedoes or lowering enemy stealth but, possibly MORE importantly, if the scenario allows hyperspace it allows you to keep a bunch of those Demos/Vorchans in hyperspace and come in guns blazing!

As for the Maximus, Frankly its still useful even with interceptors on ships, both for fighter defence and of course for bolstering the interceptors on a ship if your enemy DOES unleash a load of firepower against one target!

Agreed on all points. So far I haven't fielded any Demos in games, but now I have two Vorchans painted in my alternate colour scheme I might use those, see how they play. I do like the traditional Vorchan, though, and those 4 SAP, DD dice are nasty against most any target.

Actually one Im surprise noone seems to have mentioned anywhere is the Darkner. It looks like a nasty little piece of work to me!

Me like it! Cheap precise beam with some DD goodynes to boot.

Of course I might be little too optimistic regarding them after darkner in squadron of 3 centurion+darkner took out interceptors of omega before world of hurt hit them but I like those centauri lasers ;-)

Fits nicely in my fleets certainly.

The Darkner really is a good ship. It's a shame the Demos is so good that nobody wants to take them under normal circumstances.

I mentioned it earlier, I guess people were just being blind to anything but Vorchans though.

...I'd definitely drop out 3 Demos for other things, either Vorchans or Darkners (to maintain that at range feel).

If I actually had any Darkner models I might make more use of them, it's just they were poor in 1e, even compared to Vorchans.

Had good fun at Cranfield tyournament today with my 5 point fleet

Liati, Balvarian, Demos (x2), Covran, Maximus

First game vs Adams Centauri

vs Liati, Dmeos (x3), Covran, Darkner, Kutai x2
I came off better in the Clash of dems in the centre, fighters proved very useful for reducing interceptors and damage - his Liati was out on the flanks and by time it came back in to make an inpact it was pretty much on its own - Maximus interceptor dice having helped to keep my Liati alive in the melee. It was then a very uneven match as my Liaiti chopped his up with my remaing ships (Balvarian, Maximus, Covran + fighters) leaving a lone Covran and we called it.

Second Game vs Tanks Early EA

vs 3 railgun Hyperions, 2 olympus gunships, 2 Artemis, 2 Sag missile ships

After the usual fun banter, Tank proceeded to give me a good and proper kicking :) targeted my Liati with the majority of his fleet - "that has to die" he said - and so it did - having gutted a hyperion and anhilated a Olympus.

The Demos squadron accounted for another Sagitarius but as the game progressed I lost 2 or more ships a trun and finally left with a undamaged Demos vs 2 Hyperions, Sag, and 2 artemis - a final death charge caused a bit of damage but little else. Great fun 8)

Third Game vs Kens Dilgar

Was a bit unsure about this as the gun line seemed very formidable so charged into it with my ships :D

Having blasted several ships with my Demos squadron he retaliated with one full pentacon at the Liati - result after sooo many dodges and stirling interceptor work by the maximus resulted in no more than a couple of points of damage! Rightly outraged the second full penticon unleashed a storm of fire - several ships having perished due to the Laitis return fire. As the fusilade of fire came in aagin it was intermidating but after dodging and intecepting with unatural ability took in total over the whole turn about 7 damage and 6 crew !!! Ken never recovered as once again "he was robbed " something like 50+ dice of locked on guns rolled to achieve this !
Most centarui ships sped past the Dilgar to regroup and reload on the other side whilst the Balvarian, its fighters and the Covran kept them
occupied. The last turn we played saw several more Dilgar ships chewed and sliced apart as the Liati and Demos supported and protected by the maximus come in for the kill. Time was now my enemy as another turn would have seen more carnage.
The only ships hit on my side were a scratched Liati and dead Balvarian plus a few lost fighters - unbelievable!

great fun in all games and happy with my ships performance :D

Yp the Cranfield tourney was good fun again and it's always nice to give fanheads a bit of a beating!
