Cosmic Mongoose
Someone recently asked me to do up a standard Type L Laboratory Ship. I couldn't help myself and created an advanced version afterwards.
The ship only has 20 labs, instead of 25 and only 19 staterooms instead of 20. It also loses a ton of probe drones but upgrades the remaining to Advanced. But, it adds a briefing room, a medical lab, a library and a workshop. 40 tons of jump fuel bunkerage is converted to a fuel/cargo container since the ship has so little cargo space. To help out, it's fitted for a 400-ton external fuel ring that is good for 5 jump-1 when time isn't a factor. The computer is upgraded to a /15 model and a robot interface and Science (General) software package is added. Robotic crew has been added to assist the minimal human crew, the primary being the 5 Lab Assistant droids. Based off the MixCorp standard Improved droid, the Lab Assistant is capable of basic support of laboratory functions and simple labor functions. It also functions as a data storage and retrieval device for managing lab notes and experimental data. Scientists wanting to take advantage of this are encouraged to purchase additional units, which at 56,800Cr each are a bargain.
The Advanced Research Pinnace is a robotic take on the old Research Pinnace. The craft loses short haul passenger capacity but adds an air/raft to improve onsite utility and a very improved sensor suite. A sensor station has been added in place of the bridge to allow a scientist to oversee the improved sensors and manage the laser drill. The hull has been armored to help protect the pinnace when working in difficult conditions and a powerful cutting laser was added to help in sample gathering and other areas of inquiry. A tow cable is added as well. A crew droid backs up the pilot brain, providing a ready source of labor for the science team.
It is also capable of skimming fuel for the host Lab Ship, though this is a very slow process. The air/raft may be removed to restore the original passenger capacity or add additional cargo capacity if desired. A common conversion after removing the air/raft is to increase the cargo capacity and add a 2nd 5 ton fuel bladder to improve fuel skimming capacity.
The Advanced Research Pinnace is nearly 5MCr more expensive than it's more basic counterpart but it provides much more capability for research and long term operations away from the mother ship.
