[3rd Age Glorantha] Far Point publication (UW)?

Ilkka

Mongoose
Hello fellow Questers,

I'm new to the forum, but an old RuneQuester and a Glorantha fan. Seeing that several oldtimers and "big names" are active on this forum, I hope someone could answer my inquiry.

Will there be an official Far Point supplement coming out in the near future (possibly by the Unfinished Word staff)?

For the past ten years, there has been interesting debates and developments going on about the Far Point/Place (in northern Sartar, eastern Tarsh, and neither), also on this forum, and John Hughes has had online a huge contribution already for years. However, the Alone Confederation (Amad, Tres and Bachad Tribes, or the Solfint River region) has been covered only thinly. The Gazetteer of KeroFinela did add some information, but only to tease more...

I've run a campaign in the region for some years, and now there's an idea to publish some stuff in a Finnish Glorantha-fanzine (in English). It would be nice to know if there's a grand plan for the region.

Or, who should I ask this.

Thanks in advance,

-ILe

Hi,

The Unspoken Word does have a lot of Far Point material in its archives. However as you will see later this year we are not producing supplements per se, due to the new publication policy we will be returning to our magazine format, that means we would be running Far Point articles. However Mark Galeotti and I are both part of Moon Design, Mark is the Acquisitions Editor and I am the Art Director, so if such a product is in the schedule we will be able to support it. I am not at liberty to reveal what Moon Design's is planning for this region as of yet. However, be on the look out for Champions of the Red Moon and Trader Princes:Blood Over Gold, which are due for release this coming weekend at Tentacles 2007.

I thought the problem with the publications policy had been sorted, or am I (re)opening a whole barrel of waktapi here?

The licensing requirements under the Issaries publication policy are different for fan-published periodicals and fan published single volumes. This makes a periodical a more attractive propostion for the publisher than a series of "sourcebooks". I think this is what Simon means.

I've looked everywhere for the licensing requirements for supplements and magazines but cant find it. I found the Fan Mat Pol, obviously. Any idea where I can find it?

Thank you for your answer, Simon. I guess I'll simply write my stuff as it seems right, and see what UW might publish in the future. The more the merrier. :)

The Fan Material Policy itself is here with assorted supporting information linked from here

My reading of it suggests:-
If you want to submit an article to a (non gloranthan) magazine then you need to get Issaries approval first *UNLESS* Issaries already have an agreement with the publisher (So, for instance, you wouldn't need approval for submitting stuff to Signs & Portents)
If you want to produce a new Glorantha fan magazine then you need a formal licence from Issaries, whose terms may be unique to you, but will probably mean
  • You don't need to get approval for each issue
You don't need to pay a licence fee
You do need to send Issaries copies of the magazine
If you want to produce a new Glorantha fan supplement then you need a formal licence from Issaries, whose terms may be unique to you, but will probably mean
  • You do need to get approval for each supplement
You do need to pay a licence fee (though this may be "in kind")
You do need to send Issaries copies of the supplement
If you want to produce a pro magazine/supplement then you will need a formal licence and will need to demonstrate that you have the experience/backing/contacts etc to make it work

I assume that if you wanted to produce a RQ magazine/supplement that was entirely covered by the Open Licence (which means no Gloranthan content for a start...) then no further licensing or approval would be required. If you wanted to use material not covered by the Open Licence then you may need to talk to both Mongoose (as the publisher) and Issaries (as the RQ trademark owner)

(Edit: I am not a lawyer, so don't take my word for it!)

I've been a big fan of UW for a while, and being "background-heavy" it's pretty useful regardless of system. And yeah, I know that we have the big dividing line between MRQ/HQ and 2nd/3rd age, yadda, yadda, is there any likelihood of future UW products being dual system or containing MRQ stuff?
