3D Deck Plan TYPE S Scout

I'm the one who created the plans from this model that I built. Also, the cargo bay door is on an angle and acts like a ramp. It is not a vertical wall.

I see that you have the consoles stretching up to the ceiling. You might want to bring them down to about 3.5 feet off the floor. The wall lockers are smaller than what you show and are just there to be a guide. Take a look at this image for a better stateroom view.

Can't leave out the gunship.

Yes, this should look familiar. It is part of a book cover.

Great, thanks for posting them, I like the last one.
Bumby hull. Is that a Vue render? (I use Bryce and sometimes Vue - everything else is Sketchup - Photoshop or AI)

I've move on somewhat from the scout, that was a tester and very rough. My newer stuff is in SnP, mind you I haven't gone back and done a 3d Version since then of anything... (interiors that is)

Aha righty, handy to know that. Thing that confused me was the hull opens across the centre, your 3D model fits it better unlike the classic one which is much like the picture in the book.

Never went back to this, but perhaps I should :) Guess I was trying to fit the plans to the wrong ship.

Built in Hexagon and rendered in Vue. Photoshop was used a few times for the textures and at the end.

For some reason they didn't want me to do the exterior images, maybe timing issues. So, yeah these plans work better with the model that were built from. The iris valve should line up just right and the same with the pilots windows. The design was first made on a single plane then the cargo area was added in as an after thought so the ship's upper level sits level with the ground and the bottom of the hull actually slopes from the nose down to the rear of the ship. Good luck with your projects.

Or a "share the glory" philosophy :)

That's a real shame and pity though, doubly so as you had the images handy having done them to create the deckplans. The two kind of need to be done by the same person, or at least by people who are in close contact through the whole creative process.

At least now we know, sort of, why some deckplans don't match the exteriors. Unless it was mentioned back when the discrepancy was first noted and I've just forgotten.

And thanks for the added explanations of the layout too Kharum :)

I don't mind helping people if you want to give it a try. I help a lot of people. I'm far from the best but I think I do a good job and most important, I am quick.

I'm kinda thick when it comes to artistic CAD stuff. A pointer to a good free program for solid modelling and tutorials would be appreciated though. :)

Google sketchup is free and works on various Windows and later Macs = http://sketchup.google.com/download/. Its push pull model can be very easy to pickup - though it becomes harder to use when one tries to get fancy, especially with curves and connected 'surfaces'. Plug-ins help immensely, as well as learning best practices (though this is true of any 3D app).

Blender - http://www.blender.org/ - is also free and multi-platform (though a lot harder for most to grasp).

Hexagon, as mentioned by Kharum, is from www.daz3d.com (relatively inexpensive - might be a free version available). That site also offers several free tools (Bryce occasionally, etc.) and models.

Truespace (now owned by MS who has made it available for free) = http://www.caligari.com/. There are tutorials and lots of free stuff for this one right on the site.

All of these are modelers - not really excellent as 3D solid CAD programs, though they all have aspects of such and have been creatively used in this context.

Its one thing I've strived to do correctly (Match the Illustration with the plans), I build (usually) the map then the 3D model around the hull so it should be very close - though sometimes you have to add more etc.. As my map and 3D models are in the same program (Sketchup) its pretty good (Just tweak the plans in AI)

I do everything (Specs, Write-up, 2D plans and the 3D model) so it was slow going at 1st, learing a few new techniques and getting the right flow but I am getting quicker! Nice thing is I have a 3D model I can port to other engines, IE Bryce and Vue...

BTW Bryce 7 is now free and you can port from Sketchup to Bryce!

That's very cool. What's the learning curve on Bryce like?

I don't use it as a modeller, more a render engine (but I can add atmosphere, water, mountains, jungles, meerkats etc....)

Pretty easy to get the hang of. Though textures are a little tricky...

Someways I think I prefer Vue d'espirit. Got V4 somewhere so might see how it handles my SU models....

Export from SU (used a obj plugin or the obj export) rendered in Bryce...
Looks nice, although you have got a very light weight starship and rather
inactive waves there. :)
