3D Deck Plan TYPE S Scout

oooh thats clever,

This might make some more sense... Little bit faint them lines... and theres some wierdness going on in the engine room..

Finished ish, I have created all the other symbols too, if anyone wants them speak up!
Using the guides as the squares may be easier, I drew in the squares. ..

Well, not 100% sure this is finished... not bad for a 1st effort.

very nice,

think i may give this ago.

I know with GoogleSketch up you can set everything to set sizes. what measurements did you use (ie for the templates).

are you going to do an outer hull as well so you have the whole ship??

Looking great middenface! Some very nice touches going on there - especially like the fixings in the lounge area so far. That cargo hatch is sweat, and the drive details are coming along smashingly. 8)

Just some creative thoughts - trying to bear in mind the push-pull model that Sketchup utilizes:
  • The cabinets in the room add a bit of flavor - though I would scale them down slightly, so they don't touch the celling or the edges of the floor grid.
  • The darker control spaces in engineering and on the bridge are cool - similiar to the above, maybe lowering them a bit below the 'ceiling' level would work well.
  • A trim simple line (faces) 1/3 way down the walls (ala startrek?) would probably add a nice flare without too much detail.
  • Probably would add a few tapered boxes under the drives, but I assume those are a WIP. Also a tall, outside tapered, toward the cylinder end, box at the ends might work well - like this -
    |\
    | | (side profile - width maybe 1/3 diameter of end cylinders)
  • If you can (without trashing the underlying mesh), slant the outer walls from the bottom outward - it shouldn't affect much except the airlock and the cargo hold walls.
  • The interior walls are a bit thin, but that might be a real PITA to adjust at this point.
  • Gather you are going for a greyscale look and feel - which comes off great - translucent top faces over the fuel sections would probably look pretty darn cool - even a textured one in grey lowered slightly below the top.
Anyway, just some thoughts - keep us posted - this is really great - its inspired me to try Sketchup again (well, with Ruby).

Oh, just noticed something - everything looks to be 3M high - making doors and hatches a bit too high.

You might want to scale (they are also like 4.5 feet wide) and move the doors and hatches down slightly. I.e. - leave the last 1/3 meter or so unused, otherwise it would look like everything is made for overweight, 7 to 8 foot tall scouts... ;)

Thanks Chef.
Create a 1.5m 'template' from the ruler guides. Figure the ceiling height at 2.5m. Walls says 0.4m. Plonk in the feller from the default sketchup file, he's 1.75m. Pity theres not a vacc suit version..

Yes I would like to put the outer skin on, however theres a couple of odd things in the plans that might need some tinkering to fit the outer hull, EG cargo door opens central - which kind odd doesn't fit the outer hull unless the bottom is flat (I've seen a fair few version of the S'Type so it might work) unless the door opens into an open space an you load up port and starboard... Theres an extra iris valve in the ceiling of the main comportment.... theres two already plus the air raft bay.. I'd though this was for the probes but it means they are launched up thru the corridor above.. why not go down?

I might do the CT S-type next or the Supply shuttle from 'Travellers' :)

Bang on 2.5m, it does looks massive, which mean I have lots more room to play with. I've just put in a 1.75 human and doesn't look so bad.

I like the other suggestions, funningly enough I did start trimming the engines and then got stuck for time. Yes well 1st attempt and its not too late to try out some of these ideas. Cheers!

Oh good - sorry was going off the 3m question before, it does look fairly well porportioned in that case! Mostly, I was imaging a figure in there and it suddenly seemed wrong. ;)

Its looking great, regardless of the number of attempts (show off)!

I've got a routine, somewhere, for various types of irising hatches - thought I'd play with some Ruby this week and see if I can make a parametric version so hatches could be partway open, etc. (Happy to share.)

P.S. - looks like a filet to the decking in a number of areas - WIP?

No silly me, 0.04m for the wall thickness on the 3d map... which is way way too small...
1.5m is plenty room, two people could pass this space ok... I think say 0.25m thick walls could work?

Funny, I was just playing with this in Sketchup!

For spaceship interior walls, I was figuring about to 0.20m myself (centered)

For standard sized ships, especially the scout - 1.5m halls minus this amount is pretty decent - like 2 average people just passable (without any bulky armour ;) ). For doorways, it seems a bit large - I'd probably go with 0.9m inside width.

Sketchup ain't too bad (free version - can't see me buying the pro). Been playing with simple curved, multi-layer walls, cutting curved holes are a bit of a pain... but I'm just, just starting up the learning curve today, so we'll see.

Out of curiosity, Given High Tech materials - why not thin walls? Unless its a concealed void for conduits piping etc? A sandwhich type construction. I'd assume sound deadening material is now very thin and extremely effective...

regards

Thin walls are certainly an option - my own choice comes from the following:
  • Traveller feel - i.e. not extreme tech (nano, etc.)
Room for iris-ing, sliding doors (interior).
Interior gravitics, thermal control and radiation transfer, etc., etc.
    Looks more structurally substantial.
Mostly its a looks thing (in 3D) - since it delineates areas more clearly.

Bingo, your bang on there. I think 0.2m looks better in 3d then 0.04m. It will also allow you to fit in that fold up fresher and a some space for small lockers etc.

BTW I figure the coach on my S-Class doubles a medbay bed too.

Been think that the plans you see in the books are not exact, more of a rough representation. Just in the middle of a spring clean on my PC so I am reinstalling a few things, then finish the S-Class.

I fancy the Patrol Cruiser next..

Going to create a template and parts file for Sketchup as well.

:D

Artisitc license - not construction grade blue prints to be sure...

Good luck on the spring clean - looking forward to seeing the progress!

Thanks BP! Well the spring clean didn't go so well, fortunately I kept my old installation to one side, so I am just cleaning that up.

The 2D Template File is ready it you would like it.

ON a related note - been generating a couple of character for a solo game - not played Traveller for a long time (my 1st game was in 1984 and I used a scenairo called Sorry from White Dwarf...)

This was one of the reasons I wanted some deckplans..

Why didn't you just ask for the 3D model that was used to build the ship?

I am not aware theres one that matches the plans or one that like the image the MGT Core Rules... If there is I'll stand correct, but I can make my own. Besides far easier to fit my plans to the 3D model I make or the other way round..

Still if a 3D model exist of the MGT Scout I'd like to see it. (I've seen the original)
