3.7cm L/45 Vs 7.5cm L/24

I am creating the stats for the Panzer III, and it seems like the L and N models were pretty much available in the late war period in the infantry support role, although the N seems to be the one most common after 1942.

So, I am checking the existing weapons and I discover that the L/45 (listed as an old Panzer III weapon) Has 30" better range than the L/24 (The weapon fitted to the N model Panzer III)

I realize this is due to velocity and barrel length, etc... but the damage and all other stats are the same. Surely there is some kind of difference? Isn't the short barrel cannon designed to smash fortifications with low velocity rounds? If that is the case, shouldn't it be different somehow in the weapon it was designed to replace?

Seems odd that an "upgrade" would actually have a worse range than the original weapon, without offering something in return. All the other 7.5cm guns are a D10, shouldn't this one be as well?

No piercing/x trait is in line with a lower velocity weapon, but the role it was designed for, infantry support, would call for a bigger damage dice to destroy emplacements, or a larger lethal zone for hitting infantry, right?

The low velocity and accuaracy would count for the 75L24's lack of range but should be far superior in taking out infantry with HE - unfortunately the rules don't allow for HE shells. The 3.7cm should really only have a Lethal Zone of 1" to compensate.

The latter Pz111's would be armed with the high velocity 50L60 with possible stats of 48" and D10+1.

Yep. The Panzer III L had a 5cm gun and the stats you came up with more or less equal mine.

I am considering making the L/24 a Lethal Zone/3" like a mortar. Considering there is a Panzer IV variant armed with this weapon, it makes sense to fix it now.

I'm making these vehicles because, like the Panzer 38t and Marder III 139, several of us have these models and want to use them.

It has been fun reverse engineering the vehicle design, I enjoy doing this stuff anyway, but knowing that it will get game use is even better.

Small peeks from my upcoming Logo Licensed German Vehicle Compendium:

3.7cm L45 gun 48” D6+3 Lethal Zone/1”, Slow
5cm L60 anti-tank gun 48” D10+2 Lethal Zone/1”, Slow
7.5cm L24 gun 18” D6+3 Lethal Zone/3”, Slow

3.7cm L45 gun: Originally mounted on the Panzer III, this gun was later fitted to lighter vehicles, providing them with a heavier punch.
5cm L60 anti-tank gun: The L60 was used on the variants J/L/M of the Panzerkampfwagen III and was a slight improvement over the L42.
7.5cm L24 gun: Mounted on a variety of German vehicles, the L/24 was a solid gun, though it was out-paced by more modern designs later in the war.

Needless to say that all of the above mentioned vehicles will be covered. 8)

Woot! Nice! I am excited to see how close I came to getting them "right"

LoL! :D
There is of course no right or wrong, just similar interpretations...

Oh - it really makes me happy to hear that you are having fun to tweak and work with the system.

I cannot resist. I mod everything. D&D, 40K, everything. I have written my own rule sets, made my own games. I love it.

Lots of people get hangups about being 'official' and worry about tournament play. Blah, tourneys bring out the worst in people IMHO, making people bend the rules as far as possible, and really hurts fluff and flavor.

That is, like I said, my opinion and I know folks who love tournaments. Me, I pass.

I think the 50L60 is to powerful when compared to the 75L48 or PaK40 rules we already have. Penetration aside, Piercing/2 of the L48, the difference in bore should have some impact on the chance of a kill.

Maybe it should be D10+1 (due to its smaller bore) but have piercing/1 due to the high velocity?

I think we need to be careful when assigning things piercing traits. It's too easy to think everything has it, and that might cause armor traits on future vehicles to creep up in comparison, trying to make the connection as to what could destroy what with ease.

Does piercing represent velocity, or the type of ammo? What about multihit? What does it represent?

An interesting idea - I've found the opposite to be true when working with the rules I've published; whilst I'm more than happy for people to change things for their own use to suit their particular perceptions of one aspect or another of the period in question (they've paid for them obviously), what makes me really happy is if people can use the rules without having to tweak, fill in gaps, etc.

Maybe I was unclear - I do not like it if people think they HAVE to change it, but I like it if people are encouraged to chart out more or uncovered terrain (as in this topic the 5cm L 60 gun)!

Yes I am a positive thinking person! :D
