2nd Ed Points splitting

Just checking as I dont have my books to hand, but you can still subsplit points cant you?

So for example for a raid point I could split it to 2 skirmish, take a Corvan, and then split the second point down to 2 patrol for 2 wings of sentris?

Yes you can. But not in the same ways as Armageddon (ie. a War can't split into 2 Raid and 3 Patrol). The allowed splits are given in the PDF.

Really really hate having to memorize a list of options rather than having a clean system for breaking down...Arm was so much better in that regard at least. And it didn't screw with the 1 Arm. tourneys...

You don't need to remember it as a list of options, just remember the system it uses.

It's effectively the same as Armageddon but with one more restriction, when you split a point down further, you can only split it down to the PL below, e.g. a War point can ohnly be split into 2 Raid, 1 of those Raid can only be then split into 2 Skirmish. You can't split that 1 Battle point into Patrol points.

Just remember that 1 extra restriction and the new point split ratios and it'll be easy.

The issue with that is the restriction makes little sense and really screws with races with a hole in their list, though that is admittedly not many right now.

In a game with 5 points to split it has little real effect, but in games with few points it really hampers the choices at no gain in game play.

I guess that's my biggest beef, we have a new restriction to deal with, that doesn't likely add anything to the mix. You can dodge around it do to the increases in number of smaller ships per point, getting the same swarm fleets you had before. You just have to explain them differently, which is where I find myself having to remember a different set of fixed builds.

We've changed the rules to almost no real benefit. Just new chances to mess up and have a gotcha moment. Add in the really generally cheesed off feeling that playing a game that gets a major system changed in between printings of the rule book and just ugh...

To be honest I don't see why the FAP splitting needed to be changed from Armageddon at all. It was pretty good, everyone knew how it worked, sure you could get a "free" ship by mixing PL's... but I thought that was the point, to encourage a mix of PLs rather than taking all ships of the same PL.

Perfectly good splitting system turned into totally broken one, IMO.

I dunno. The current system only seems to hamper patrol lvl swarmer fleets when you play war of armageddon lvl games. 1 battle point gives you 8 patrol lvl choices. No loss there. Thats 16 Tethys against a single Omega, YIKES.

No reason for the change i can think of. No penalty for swarmers, but for splitting your fleet across many different PLs :S
