The Puritans were not very nice people.
The only reason that they went to the New World was, after all, that they had been previously forcibly deported from several other countries as being a bad lot.
They were actually in the process of trying to sneak back into England (again), but got spotted and "moved on".
Think of them as Protestant Talibani and you get the picture (just less fun).
They could be used however as the basis of a really satisfyingly "evil" religious cult though. Sort of like the Provolutionists but absolutely convinced that God on "their" side so they can always justify anything by a higher legality.

The period of time from from the early part of the 21st century until approximately 2050 is known to most historians as "Twilight". Details of the period are sketchy at best, due to the loss of the information infrastructure, along with so much else.
The available evidence suggests that a number of factors pushed the world towards chaos, including shifting weather patterns, political instability in the United States and Russia, expanding terrorist threats, and a hungry world edging towards 7 billion souls.
The shifting weather patterns turned some breadbasket regions into dust-bowls, while deserts bloomed under torrential rains. Famine marched across the globe, and armies with it. At first, the armies were refugees, but as conditions worsened, the refugees were joined by national military units, and their militia brethern.
At some point in the period there was a limited nuclear exchange between Russia, China, and the United States, though the cause is still unknown. Most of Europe and Asia, along with the American East and West Coast, was badly battered, and the consequent destruction of transportation, power and information infrastructures plunged the rest of the world into famine and despair.
France and Japan were among the few nations that retained any sort of infrastructure, and were the first to emerge as whole nations after the war. Japan retreated into isolationism in order to rebuild, but France reached out, first to it's colonies in Africa and South America, and then to the nearby European nations, using the resources it controlled to help the other nations rebuild, and establishing it as the leading nation in the recovery.

Covers all the 2300AD bases without bogging down.
The only thing is, I would say 8 billion (perhaps 7.5). We're going to hit 7 billion too soon.

And add India and Pakistan into that limited exchange thing. Once the nukes start flying, I don't see them staying out of the party.

Years of crop failures in Mexico pushed refugees north into Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California. Increasing violent responses to these refugees, especially from the resurgent New America militia, prompted a series of escalating border clashes between Mexican troops and American militia and National Guard units. After the collapse of the American Central government following the nuclear strikes, Mexico moved in to restore order and "safeguard Mexican citizens".
And add India and Pakistan into that limited exchange thing. Once the nukes start flying, I don't see them staying out of the party.

Good solution Colin, a good way of not upsetting the grogs & I am personally glad you are not using the asteroid impact which felt like a convenient solution, we are far more likely to mess this place up ourselves without relying on external influences.
Anyway you should be concentrating on the immediate past to give fluff and colour not overall history.
You can always fill in a few details about Twilight (uncovered conspiracies & secret forces causing the wars and instabilities to further their own ends, etc.) when you do all the nation sourcebooks :wink:

Oh, I'm still thinking of using as asteroid. A little bitty one that hits somewhere in the Sahara. Without anyone noticing until after the fact. That scares France into space. Just a bit of fluff to explain why France is pushing into space when everyone else is still just recovering.
