1st ed. HG Spacecraft Options/Stealth Jump Drive p. 43

Hello all,

I've scoured the forum trying to find out the tons and cost for the stealth jump drive described on 1st ed. HG p. 43. To the best of by digging I did not find any information, even though there where several threads on stealth jump drives.

The fast-cycle jump drive costs 10% more than a standard jump drive which suggests that the stealth jump drive would at the least have the same 10% cost. I guessing that the stealth jump drive has additional components that somehow reduces jump flash which is probably more expensive than installing quick-charging capacitors.

Does increasing the tons and cost by 10% over a standard jump drive seem reasonable?

What is the criteria for a stealth jump drive in 2nd ed. HG?

MgT1: High Guard p43: No extra tonnage, but TEN times the cost.

MgT2: It requires two TL worth of TL upgrades, that costs 25% extra. J-4 is a TL 13 component, two TL upgrades would be available at TL15.

Sounds like you have the earlier version of High Guard, there was a later printing where this was corrected and the cost was put in.

12:36 PM PST AnotherDIlbert and AndrewW,

Thank you AnotherDilbert for providing the stealth jump drive cost as being ten times the price of a standard jump drive. Yes, AndrewW my physical copy of the 1st ed. HG has a copyright of 2008 with the table of contents for Mercenary and has the following information on p. 43

Stealth Jump: A stealth jump drive minimizes the burst of radiation
caused by the transition from jump space into real space. Normally,
a ship that emerges into real space will be automatically detected
if it emerges within the “minimal” detail range of the sensor.
However, detecting a ship equipped with a stealth drive emerging
into real space requires a Sensor, Intelligence or Education, Difficult
(–2) skill check if within “limited” detail range of the sensor or a
Very Difficult (–4) skill check if within “Minimal” detail range of the
sensor.

My 1st ed. HG PDF last updated 12/21/14 does include the
A stealth drive takes up no extra tonnage but costs ten times
the amount of a standard jump drive.
at the end.

I also have the Traveller High Guard Errata from the product page which does not mention adding the line to the first printing of HG in 2008.

I'll have to start checking both copies now.

Thank you both for the help.

I've always wondered what sort of detection ranges we should be looking at. Some things, like passive IR, give you detection at light minutes. But you don't know what is out there, just an IR signature. You may pick up some passive electronic leakage at a distance, but not if they are actually trying to be sneaky. A merchie normally doesn't want to be sneaky, so he'll be squawking his transponder, as would most any ship during regular operations. That's a pure safety factor.

Any really useful target data will require closure to light-seconds though. Radar/lidar will work, but you'd need to be close enough to get the signal, and of course in order for it to work you can't deviate from your course (you really need to be travelling towards the object to get it, as an oblique course means your bounced signal will be behind you when it returns). You also have to hope your target isn't maneuvering at all, as if it is, your signal will have a hard time connecting to return your image.

Yeah, there's definitely room here to really explore sensors, how they work, and what limitations a ship should suffer trying to use them at a distance.

There is a trade in program for the original printing, see this thread:

Thank you for the link, however at this late date I do not feel that the trade in program is still valid. Besides I paid for another copy of HG in PDF, thank you for reminding me, and I'll try to remember to check the PDF copy with my physical copy.
