10 Tn Zho Fighter take two...(feedback applied)

Cosmic Mongoose
I am working on a rework of the other desing, trying to incorporate some feedback from the readers. However i tried an angular desing, with the nice little swept forward structures and angled wignlets to try and giveit a more Zho-ish look..what do you think?

I as happy with the amount of feedback I got on an earlier desing. Nice to have people around who can be constructively critical without being petty :D

So without further ado, partly inpsired by the folks of CoTI and Mongoose Forums,...

The Type 125 Sh'zahg "Frightful Shape/shadow"

Zhodanii Type 127 Fighter.
One of the newest fighters deployed by the Zhodanii fleet, client states, and Allied forces. Type 125 Sh'zahg ( "Frightful shape", Imperium Code Name Zack) Is a Swift agile, and lethal fighter. reserved for More experienced pilots The Sh'zahg is named after a lethal ray like aquatic predator revered by the minor race native to the designers homeworld. The Sh'zahg made it's debut during a border dispute between a large mining concern and a Zhodani corporation. When The mining Concerns mercenary security forces fired on a transport severely damaging it. A single Zhodani Carrier and it's escorts were dispatch.

The Flights of Fighters launched by the Squadron disabled and nearly destroyed the four Mercenary cruisers in the area, and flattened the ground installation being contested by the two companies. Even with fighter support the four Broadswords were unable to deal with he massed missile and laser fire put out by several squadrons of fighters. In the end the mercenary cruisers were able to destroy several fighters, but they inflicted no harm what so ever on the carrier or its escorts as they hovered well outside of weapons range.

Like the Older 10 ton trilobite the Sh'zahg is lightly armoured, and has few defences, he pilot also sets in a sealed cockpit, with only narrow blow out panels covering vision slots to allow the pilot to operate if his electronics are destroyed, The Fighter does however have some pilot survival hardware built in to allow the pilot to eject in safety and survive for an extended period while waiting for pickup by his carrier vessel.

While more sophisticated than the Trilobite, the type 125 is still highly vulnerable to hostile fire, and it's pilots have only a marginal survival advantage over the older fighters. The Zhodani have put more attention to the weapons, and firecontrol systems of the newer fighter, but still seem to consider even experienced pilots as unfortunate casualties.

Notes: the type 125 is better suited to atmospheric combat, and has no penalties applied to sensors. When firing in fighter wings due to the accurate modification of the pulse laser the barrage fired by a fighter flight has an additional +1 modifier.

Overall I like this design, but for some reason the winglets look like afterthought add-ons. For me, they don't feel like a clean part of the rest of the design.

I say keep polishing the design. :D

Not sure where I went wrong with those....I'll toy around and see how they look with ore detail, and try a no wiglet version

Thinking of the winglets. What would it look like with slightly smaller winglets, but emerging from the dorsal surface of the outrigger pods themselves, rather than from the outside edge?

And maybe at the same angle as the dorsal ones on the fuselage?

About like this...maybe slightly larger.

This is slightly more enjoyable than staring at an image for an hour going...what now.....

What if the winglets are canted inward towards the fuselage?

oddly to my eye the same sized wignlet canted inward was harder to notice so I had to tweak it slightly.

I was actually thinking of them being as wide as the original winglet, just not quite so long.

I didn't think about them being on both the upper and lower sides of the pod, but it looks very good, something very predatory about the look of it now.

I think the winglets/fins coming down from the underside of the fuselage might be too much? Just keep the ones on top and the ones on the top and bottom of the outrigger pods?

I usually go through several different configurations on any decently detailed design... So Ill run a few more tries at the design and see what looks promising..no telling what this will end up as eventually..I've started off designing a fighter and it ends up being the illustration for a cruiser...

Zhodani Naval Design Studios - You think it, we design it.

The main observation I'd make about the fighter is that it feels too "shoe-horned" to me into making the Zhodani into the Star Wars Empire -> Imperial Japanese Navy. Even the codename sounds typically WW2 US; my own personal bias is that I'm a bit tired of gamers (especially American gamers) trying to make everything WW2 again.

The IJN had very lightly armored planes because they wanted long range over everything else and did consider their pilots somewhat expendable as their navy was intended for a short-term war and not a long-term war of attrition. The Star Wars Empire is explained as making TIE fighters really lightweight because they wanted to keep costs down and again, had such a huge manpower pool they considered their pilots expendable.

The Zhodani don't really seem like that kind of culture. Given their extensive use of warbots, I'd argue the Zhodani actually place greater value on the lives of their soldiers than the Imperium does.

The Zhodani (conveniently) have lower TLs than the Imperium, but I believe they'd probably give their pilots fighters that are quite survivable; if anything I suspect Zhodani fighters would have the best performance they could get at TL14; this would be below the Imperial TL15 fighters (obviously). I don't like to believe that any group of people are stupid. The Zhodani would be well-aware that their lower technology would put them at a disadvantage against Imperial TL15. They would probably design their fighters to be shorter-ranged, highly survivable, perhaps trading off range and offensive power for survivability and instead using doctrine to limit the range of their fighters where they could be supported by some other class, perhaps like a high-G turn capable "fighter-leader" light starship designed to even things out against Imperial Ramparts.

The main observation.......

Thanks for the honest opinion...

I understand your impression, and rest assured it wont be WWII in space..I think that's another thread around here somewhere.

This is one of several designs and it is written from a certain point of view..That being imperial...it's a bit of a technique to give players a slightly lopsided view of what they would be in for if they came up against a Zho fighter for the first time....they'd quickly discover they are fairly formidable for their weight class with a few specific traits.

each side will have traits and quirks the other can exploit, either due to tech, or design trends, setting precedents....although I may not have them precisely in line with earlier works....

If you read old descriptions of the Russian fighters they were always described as dangerous, but highly flawed designs..This is because at the time it was believed its important to give the impression that you will have to be on your toes, but that with proper mindset, and skills the enemy can be defeated...since the book is from and centered mostly on Imperium based designs I decided to take a not so clinical approach to descriptive text.

This model actually has better guns and sensors than normal for a "toss away"...as well as enhanced fire control software.

As for recreating WWII, it's slightly hard not to resemble certain events/movies/trends...they are woven tightly into most sci-fi featuring any form of fighters. Also once again this is one of several craft I am working on..the 10/20 ton range are the smallest, most expendable, and least powerful class of fighters.

there will be Imperium Designs in the same weight class with eh same general lack of heavy armor and weapons...so it's not entirely lopsided.

Basically they are deployed in large numbers to overwhelm and saturate point defense and enemy targets with sheer volume of fire, or screen against enemy fighters and incoming missiles. this is the common role of WWII fighters, numbers over individual power. Until later in the war when Heavy fighters, and advanced specialized came into use.

Strike fighters, Battlespace Superiority fighters, and patrol fighters will be larger , more advanced, and less expendable on both sides of the lines.Civilian Fighters( yes I am including designs strictly for the civvies/merc market) will have more attention to comfort, survival, and flexibility..rather than being optimized for one role. So each size and tye of fighter will have traits that are common to the class.

I plan to do a lot more in the way of explaining the fighter as an instrument of war. how fighters are deployed, who flies them, what the advantages/drawbacks will be in the full text of the project. Unfortunately I cant post everything here, or I wouldn't have anything left to give people a reason to get the book, and my goal is to do another book for the Traveller setting as a companion piece to the commercial vessel book waiting for release....assuming my first catalog doesn't get me laughed off the internet ,or hunted down by angry, torch and pitchfork armed gamers.
