Z-Plan Ship Names

Mongoose
Does anyone know where I can find the potential ship names for the uncompleted z-plan ships. I would love to build the entire fleet but naming ships by letter seems fairly lame.

Cheers

Matt

carriers = Graf Zeppellin and Peter Strausser
H Class battleships - only two names - Freidrich Der Grosse and Grosse Deutshland.

Thats about as far as I can help you.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that one of the planned Carriers was to be called the Seydlitz? But can't track down where I found it.

For guidance in naming the hypothetical ships I'd look at the naming convention of the ships that were built, so go for cities for light cruisers and war heroes for heavy cruisers and bigger. Destroyers were pretty much saddled with numerical designatios only after the initial 1934-ish ships.

They tended to re-use names quite a bit. . . so here's some WWI names. Look at the bottom of the left-hand column.

Here you go but be warned. Only the first paragraph is "real" data, the rest being like having a "fantasy football team" (US style football).
"Furashita's Fleet" is a parody for something 'else'. Come to think of it, I know of a blue P-40 Warhawk that would fit in nicely with that website.

Now, now Mr. Bu, play nicely! :D

On the subject of carrier names, one of the planned carriers was not only to be called the Seydlitz, she WAS the Seydlitz - the heavy cruiser of that name was taken in hand for conversion to an aircraft carrier in August 1942.

Well, with my luck someone will find a factual reference and rub my nose in it, heh.

If you take a peek at the combinedfleet link that I mentioned, it does indeed bespeak of the incomplete Hipper-class ship that was taken in hand for conversion. It even has a nice drawing that you can look at. She would have been a real nice looking ship. She would make for a nice commerce raiding scenario in tandem with several pocket battleships in the southern lattitudes.

Hmm, title suggestion of "Eagles and Wolves"???

Names I came up with:

Battleships:
Hindenburg
Gross Deutschland
Friedrich der Grosse
Admiral von Ingenohl
Admiral von Pohl

Carrier:
von Richthofen
Stern von Afrika

agis, not so sure about Von Pohl. Don't think he was awefully well recieved in charge of the high sea's fleet. but you're choice :p

Considering that Hitler changed the name of pocket battleship Deutschland because he could't bear the thought of a ship named after the fatherland sinking I doubt he'd have approved a ship named Gross Deutschland. :)

Yes, but if he had been able to build that ship, he would no longer be losing. He'd be winning.

Thanks for all of your help guys. I think I will reuse some names from the WW1 fleet.

Matt

Yes, that's a good way to go. Heck, it's what nations do most of the time anyway. :D
